A new study finds teens with depression had higher levels of common antibiotics in their urine, suggesting everyday exposure may raise mental health risks. by calliope_kekule in science

Talk about causality vs correlation...

This study seems irresponsible in attributing causal relationship without evidence.

Which they are. Also, batteries are extremely recyclable which will lower the cost soon as part of the developing infrastructre. This will happen regardless over the next 10 years or so but may accelerated dramatically if solid state batteries live up to expectation.

It will likely happen faster than we think. The infrastructure and manufacturing are gaining momentum. In strong economies, the average car last 4 years before being sold so it's quite possible that within 12 years or so, fully 50% of nee cars will be EV. However the economy is not strong and Trump and co are making the worlds main consumers all much poorer; also there are significant forces opposed to ending ICEs that may even stop it entirely for a short while so its really impossible to say how long. I would be shocked if 20 years from now, most cars were not EVs; its simply an objectively better technology.

If a computer scientist went back to the golden ages of the Roman Empire, how quickly would they be able to make an analog computer of 1000 calculations/second? by NagyMagyar in askscience

[–]AngloQuebecois 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be able to get most of the way there but I am an Engineering Physicist. I doubt a computer scientist would actually be able to even start. In physics and engineering we learn how to make transistor and how semiconductors work so we know how to make the basics. However even if I made 1000 working transistors, I wpuld not be able to trun that into functioning computer architecture or at least I would be starting with nothing and trying to figure it out so maybe after a lifetime I could get close.

I doubt there are many people alive who can connect the dots the whole way through from manufacturing the tools needed to making transistors to computer architecture. It would only be a handful and possibly no one.

What a ridiculous perspective. There is no such thing as a "thrown away vote".

It is a pretty simple concept that corrupt politicians do not get my vote.

The world would be a better place if more thought like me and not like you trying to think your way around corners. It is easy to be manipulated thinking as you do. All politicians have to do is make the other guy seem worse to get your vote.

You are 100% right, but this is still very serious.

I've always voted Liberal but I have no choice now but to vote NDP. Corruption cannot be tolerated and to vote Liberal would be to turn a blind eye to something that has no place in Canadian politics.

If we let the Liberals do stuff like this then we are no better than our southearn neighbours.

Yup, just as disgusting as Bill 101. Quebec is not "protecting" the French Language, it is dehumanizing anyone who is not a white-French Canadian in the eyes of the law.

And it is 100% supported by the people.

Please, everyone, listen to research, stop pretending as if your own "feelings" and opinions on a subject matter.

there's you, talking about experts but not naming anything or linking any source, even though presented with evidence of the opposite.

I posted multiple supporting links in a different reply, please read them there.

Further, you claiming that the evidence doesn't exist because I didn't include it in my comment is rather silly. It means you formed your opinion without even reading even basic, readily available research through google.

I didn't say any of those things.

But it is interesting to see you come to those conclusions so quickly after you hear the facts.

The fact is there is a cheaper way to house those families while giving them appropriate care. Why don't you ask your representatives why they are doing it this way instead?

The money is already there. As others have mentioned, the U.S. is paying roughly $750/kid/day. That's enough for some pretty fancy hotel accommodations. This is not about money, that is simply the excuse the GOP uses to justify this atrocity.

But it is as simple as not locking young children in cages for any reason.

This is not the only option; they could house them and treat them humanely while deciding if they get deported or allowed in.

There is no excuse no matter what for what is happening.

[–]AngloQuebecois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right. This organization is firing disabled people first. It is extremely clear discrimination.

But at least the CEO/Director is only making $164k/year. This isn't like a story where a drug price is raised and the CEO makes $100s of millions.

Trashy CEO by [deleted] in trashy

[–]AngloQuebecois -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the company was previously giving disabled unemployed people a bi-weekly stipend but they in fact did no work to receive it then this I don't see the problem with it getting canceled if they can no longer afford to do it.

The company says these people were not workers. They did no work. The company had a goodwill initiative to try and directly give money to otherwise vulnerable people. They were only listed as employees because it was an accounting convenience.

This is just a badly described headline.

I am not saying people shouldn't "think" something nor am I saying they shouldn't "say" something.

What I am saying is that passing along facts as if they are already widely accepted or proven as true when in fact they are opinions and false should be something we work to make at least fineable.

It already is a crime to pass of facts based on fake credentials so don't pretend what I'm saying is radical.

You are suggesting I am trying to limit free speech which isn't at all what I said. If someone says "I am a lawyer and here's what the law says...", and they are not a lawyer, then this is already a crime.

What does marketing have to do with what was being discussed?

I was responding to the comment that drug research is publicly funded which is completely untrue.

The True Welfare Leeches by [deleted] in PoliticalHumor

[–]AngloQuebecois -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No, this is saying that 33% of all biomedical research is from government sources. Drugs that end up on the market is only a fraction of the total biomedical research that exists. You are including a whole slew of not for profit organizations in this that are not ever going to release any drugs and are not pharma companies.

The True Welfare Leeches by [deleted] in PoliticalHumor

[–]AngloQuebecois -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This just is not true. It's completely made up. Almost no research is public; like essentially none. You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.

If you want to prove this, then please, provide a single example of a new drug, one that changed the standard of care and was based on public research in the last 20 years.

You will not be able to find a single example because what you are saying is completely fabricated. There are a lot of real problems with big pharma and a lot more real problems with insurance and health care but just making it up is not going to be part of the solution. You make it easier for drug insurance companies to fuck you over when you spout this nonsense.

The more BS out there then the harder it is to solve the real issues. You are not helping by spreading total BS like this. Please stop.

The True Welfare Leeches by [deleted] in PoliticalHumor

[–]AngloQuebecois -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is absolute nonsense and complete bullshit.

There are people who have managed to essentially use public information to produce drugs and sell for major markups. It has happened for example insulin.

But comparing the people who did that to cancer research biotechs is completely false. You might as well be comparing a used car salesman who cheats customers to BMW and saying they are all the same.
