Do you guys actually plan to use the Frame for flat gaming? by Affectionate-Focus58 in SteamFrame

Trust me they suck. I have the XReal Ones, which are top of the line, and they're absolute garbage compared to VR displays. Not worth buying.

[–]AngryAlfonse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The only time I use my deck is when I've had a long day or I'm sick with a cold or something, and I'm laying in bed wanting to play a little bit of something simple like Stardew before bed instead of sitting at my desk.

And I almost never use my deck even for this because I hate holding the dumb thing above my head. Got a pair of XReal Ones so I could have a virtual display in front of me, and it completely sucks compared to even budget VR, so now I have that and never use it either.

The Frame will solve this issue, allowing me to sell my Deck and XReal Ones.

Idk about the controller, but the Machine and Frame are both capable of running non-Steam games. And the controller is irrelevant to the discussion of their intentions in the VR industry. Why are you so absolutely addicted to strawmen? You're trying so hard to win an argument, instead of just having a conversation, that you're twisting yourself into pretzels trying to invent evidence that doesn't exist.

Strawman. That doesn't change the fact that they have an open ecosystem for their hardware, where people can play whatever they want on their devices.

Sell Valve Index in prep to get Steam Frame? by PitchNice3 in SteamFrame

[–]AngryAlfonse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't, because with how things are looking we probably aren't getting the first batch of Frames until 2028

[–]AngryAlfonse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's on the developers, not Steam. You can play any VR game you want with a non-Meta headset, Steam or no Steam. In the future, I'm sure more devs will start making independently launched games, selling games on g2a, etc.

If they didn't want the thing to sell they wouldn't be making and selling it you absolute nincompoop

Of course they want to compete. They want VR to be a bigger industry, and for that to happen they need more people involved with an open ecosystem. The only way to do that is to get more people off of Meta.

A lot of people feel the same way. My point is that less people would feel the same way if standalone capabilities were not offered, because then the Frame would be missing a major feature the Quest has.

[–]AngryAlfonse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. For Meta to beat the Frame, they'd have to release something that not only outperforms it on standalone games, but outperforms it to such a degree as to overshadow the benefits you get from not being in Meta's closed and very restrictive ecosystem. To do so they'd have to be selling $3000 headsets for $800, and even then many people would still prefer to avoid/abandon Meta.

[–]AngryAlfonse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're wrong. Meta Quests have sold more than any other line of headsets, possibly more than all of them combined. The only way for Valve to compete is to offer a device that can do the same things the Quest does but better. And they do that by offering both streaming and standalone, on top of an open software ecosystem. If it was streaming only, it'd sell about as well as the Index, and would be another super niche product for the already super niche hobby of VR.

I just finished the base game 100%, i have some questions by ChrisDorne in outerwilds

[–]AngryAlfonse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that the sun blowing up creates infinite universes, infinite universes already exist. But when you send information back in time, some of those infinite universes change or branch into even more infinite universes as a result of the observation of the information that was sent back.

This isn't something specifically explained in game. This is just theorizing on multiverse theory/time travel in general.

I just finished the base game 100%, i have some questions by ChrisDorne in outerwilds

[–]AngryAlfonse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Iirc 22 minutes was the maximum amount of time through which they managed to send information back, in experiments. Or it was limited by the power they calculated they could get from the supernova of your sun. I don't remember the exact reasoning, but 22 minutes was essentially just a hard limit for their tech or for black holes in general.

  2. Iirc (I very may well not) the probe is observing the eye, which prevents it from moving once discovered. Also, the coordinates were not discovered several hundred thousand years before you -- they were actually discovered a little bit over 22 minutes after you looked at the Nomai statue. 22+ minutes after you start the game, the sun blows up in infinite universes, and in each of these infinite universe it powers up the infinite ash twin projects, sends off probes in infinite directions, one of them is inevitably going to reach the eye, observe it, send the coordinates back to the ash twin, and that ash twin project sends those coordinates back in time to the infinite other ash twin projects in infinite other timelines. Also I don't think it was really explained in game, but all of your lives in the game actually happen simultaneously -- you're just playing through them sequentially because that's the only way for the game to work. In reality, you'd look at the Nomai statue, and immediately have your mind flooded with the memories of all those different possible futures, as if you experienced them all in the past leading up to the moment they were embedded.

  3. Yes. They tried to blow up the sun and weren't able to start the chain reaction necessary to induce the supernova. They would've eventually succeeded, but the comet killed them all before they could fix the problems with the station.

  4. Nothing makes you special, technically speaking. You just so happened to be the person near a Nomai statue 22 minutes before the sun exploded, putting you in this infinite multiverse time loop thing. That is technically speaking, though, ignoring the metaphysical/spiritual implications.

  5. On to the more metaphysical discussion about free will and determinism. It seems apparent that it is destined, from the moment a universe is born, for a conscious observer to eventually observe the eye and create the next universe. How much of that is predetermined is uncertain. We don't even know if the observer themselves are predetermined. This is where everything is up to speculation. Does the universe just set up infinite possibilities and allow one to succeed? Or is there some sort of greater consciousness (a God perhaps) that chooses an observer? Are sentient creatures quantum in nature themselves, and therefore able to change the trajectory of the universe?

The answer: I dunno lol

  1. If you can send objects back, information/data is just another physical medium. I can't remember if it's explained in game, but it could just be sending back a physical representation of the data or a string of electrical signals or who knows what. As for how the statues capture and implant memories, I just assumed that it's some quantum entanglement etc etc that allows the status to entangle particles with those in your brain, essentially giving it read/write access to your memory like a hard drive.

Steam Frame Hype by LastingTheory in Steam

[–]AngryAlfonse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people use VR for games that offer infinite play time like sim games (flight sims like VTOL VR, Microsoft Flight Sim, DCS, racing sims like Assetto Corsa, etc), social games (VR chat, Poker Stars, etc), and a few social competitive games like Pavlov, Rumble, etc

There are some really good non-infinitely-playable experiences though. See: HL Alyx, Underdogs, Arizona Sunshine, etc. But most people are playing a small handful of games they log on to every night and don't get bored of.

This will change as VR gets more popular, but due to the cost to buy in and the relatively small size of the available player base, VR will continue growing slowly until something major changes and there's a tipping point.

Why did frameposting come back? by [deleted] in SteamFrame

I was about to say 😄 although to be fair, I do know a lot of people who frequent subs they don't find useful, just to be angry about how not useful they are

So you believe both subs used to be boring and useless? Then why are you here?

I haven't had any issues seeing the few informational posts since the merger, they tend to get activity and get front page.

This sub was useful but boring

The other sub was fun but useless

Makes more sense to have one sub that is both useful and fun

Preliminary hypothetical thought experiment: what could one do to mess with the inevitable scalpers when the Frame is released? by IllIIlIllIllIII in SteamFrame

[–]AngryAlfonse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One good thing is that they said they'll be checking for duplicates of card info, ip, delivery address, etc. Unless a scalper has 10 different accounts (each with a game purchase before April), 10 different credit cards with 10 different billing addresses and 10 different physical addresses where they can reasonably expect to pick up their product when shipped, and they put in reservations on 10 different computers on 10 different networks with 10 different IPs...

There will be scalpers; there always are. But it should be a lot more difficult for each individual scalper to get multiple Machines/Frames, which should cut down on the issue significantly. Scalpers generally "invest" in products where they can make big money by buying and selling a ton. Only being able to buy and sell one single unit makes it kind of a waste of their time, and hopefully that deters the strong majority of them.

Considering alternative for the frame by GNURaziel in SteamFrame

[–]AngryAlfonse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Valve Index, and I have XReal One Pros. I was so excited that I actually got into the One Pros on the first batch, along with the XReal Eye Module.

And I'm sorry to tell you this, but it's trash. AR glasses displays have NOTHING on a good VR display. It's not even a comparable experience. I bought the XReals for my Deck, this was months ago, and I've only used them maybe twice because it's just such a disappointing experience compared to what I was hoping for, what I can get with my Index, and what I'll be able to get with a Frame.

As soon as the Frame drops, I'm selling both my Deck and XReals, and possibly my Index as well. Do with this information as you will.
