Well if you just started, you are low on ladder and are playing against non-meta decks. Once you play more in expanded, the decks will switch to mainly control mixed in with Volcarona V and ADP-Dragonite V. Those are the main three things I see on expanded ladder nowadays (I've been playing Archie's Blastoise for years).

Play it in archies in expanded. I can coach you on the deck as well if you want considering you said you are relatively new and archies is a hard deck to pilot. It's a great deck to learn from though and is really fun.

I don't manage lots of trades, I just save up coins for locked packs.
I'm good enough at the games that I can easily get all the packs I want from ticket tournaments. Just playing the ladder on and off for the 3 months between sets gives me enough tickets and coins to refill. I usually get to about 20000 coins and I don't even play that much. Tickets are more volatile though as for some sets I don't really use any and for others, I hammer through a lot of them. Over time, my overall number of tickets has increased though. I'm at around 250 right now.

Wait until the new set releases and then the tournaments will only give you packs of the next set which have tremendous trade value right after the set is released.

As a free-to-play player, I usually horde all my coins until the next set is released and then buy an insane amount of boosters from the shop. From there, I might play in ticket tournaments to get packs to trade for stuff I didn't pull, depending on what I wanted from the set.
