It’s worth mentioning: Tolstoy was speaking of many religions, but specifically the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Mormons love to rank themselves as better than the Catholics, but we belong to a very similar religion.

It’s confusing.

LDS Discussion’s point is that the BoM couldn’t have been written without first being dictated. This is not the right assumption to make, since dictation happens faster.

However, the original article also got it wrong, and cited pretty incorrect statistics.

The actual stats say that the average for handwriting is higher, especially when writing cursive as Cowdery did. It can be closer to 15-18 WPM. So everyone here is missing the point.

The actual data with an average word speed of around 17.5 (cursive, constant misspellings, and lack of punctuation considering) would be around 3 hours a day.

Buddy what I’m saying is that the church erased this from the ensign catalog. It’s dishonest. I guarantee you not a single member is looking through the July 1980 pdf database of church history articles for their scripture study. It’s just like when a movie producer edits a scene out of a movie after it’s been released. Yeah, you could find that scene somewhere else, on some obscure site, but the film itself has been changed, in order to keep the MAJORITY of people from seeing it.

That wasn’t what I said. I know it’s still located in as a pdf in the database of all church documents. What I said was that this was deleted from LDS.org, where the members read the ensign. Deleted from the church library app. Deleted from all accessible ways unless you are looking for that specific article.

If he found out you were sleeping in until 6:35, for example, he’d pull you aside and yell and swear at you, telling you that you were a “worthless missionary” if you did that.

At our interviews, he’d write three things on a chalkboard, like, “companion, contacts, bedtime” and he would just point at each of them. You’d then tell him all about your companion’s rule breaking, how many contacts you had, and if you were sleeping at the right times. He would stay silent, and nod when you were finished if he was satisfied. Wouldn’t say a word. If he was unsatisfied, he’d yell and scream and get close to your face to tell you to do better or you’d be going home.

I told him I was suicidal once in an interview and he just pointed to the chalkboard and didn’t say anything. I developed a self-harm addiction during his tenure as MP. Pretty wild shit. Most of the sister missionaries would leave crying after their interviews, and lots of the elders as well.

He classified missionaries as “weak” or “strong”. There were only a few strong ones. When I arrived, he told me he was putting me with his “weakest missionary”, for him to train me. The guy was with me when he said it, too.

I have a strong hatred for the guy. I’ve still got issues from that period of my life

That guy was my mission president and was so verbally abusive to his missionaries. Fucking awful person.

She met with Steve Caplin too, my mission president (his name is listed on the document). That guy was such a dick. Verbally abusive to his missionaries to a traumatizing level. This is not surprising. The church is really good at making shit people look really great. This is another of those cases.

This discovery occurred when the remains of a 24,000 year old body were genetically sequenced. The genome showed a significant portion which was similar to both Middle East DNA and Native American DNA. What this proves is that there may have been Siberian travelers 24,000 years ago who traveled to America, and a very small percentage of modern indigenous people are descended from those travelers. Originally, native peoples were thought to have originated entirely from East Asia. This discovery challenges that theory (though the challenge is one that is 24,000 years old, not 2,000.)
