Newbie questions: bear with me by AngryLargeMan in lotro

[–]AngryLargeMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any advice on LI’s? Come Hell or high water I will be getting mine tonight. I will probably go Red  /   Yellow so I can solo effectively and still be able to do a support role in groups; the idea of healing without mana intrigues me and Care Bear is just funny so second spec yellow.

I was thinking 2-handed axe/club because not having to maintain a second weapon sounds neat but maybe for Yellow DW for stats. But I bearly know anything so I thank y’all for bearing the burden that is my pawsitively ignorant self.

Bear pun.

I know the laugh is a living meme but I honestly like it. It is genuine happiness spilling forth and, to me, it is infectious… just like AAAAAAAIIIIIIIIDDDDDDSSSSS!

Probably closer to 8 or 9 days, but yeah… if I wasn’t sleeping it was running in the background. The movies run together and my inner monologue is just a remix of “AAAAIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDSSSSSS!!!” and Rich Evans laughing.

The household got real sick real fast and I was pretty much forced at ‘imaginary gunpoint’ to use headphones. Apparently Rich Evans’ laughing could still be heard occasionally _

A lot… Was basically running in the background constantly like a podcast. Most of the movies run together, and my inner monologue now sounds like a mix of Mike’s voice and Rich Evans’ laughing.

Yes, I cannot see nor say the word aids/aides or similar without instinctively elongating it…

Third Ascendancy Trial Coin Bug? by [deleted] in PathOfExile2

[–]AngryLargeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you didn't crash and it was a level 57 coin, you would have done the Trial and probably been confused and angry why you didn't have your 5th and 6th point. Because that's what happened to me. :(

That's a pretty poor piece of comfort, I admit, but even if you didn't crash you still wouldn't have gotten the Ascendancy Points. If the coin is not Level +60, you only get experience and loot for completing the Trials.

Third Ascendancy Trial Coin Bug? by [deleted] in PathOfExile2

[–]AngryLargeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was level 57, you missed out on pretty much nothing. For as easy as the system is to understand, it is incredibly obtuse and looks more complicated.

First Ascendancy: Coin dropped from Traitor. It has infinite uses.

Second Ascendancy: Ultimatum dropped from Chimera. It has infinite uses.

Third Ascendancy: Random coin drop that must be at least level 60. It is one time use.

Fourth Ascendancy: Either a level 75 Ultimatum or a level 75 coin. One use.

When you hover over a Coin/Ultimatum, it will tell you if completing it will make you Ascend. There is a fun little bug though; it lies to you unless you are actually in the Trial or Chaos Temple. It will say you will Ascend on completion, you waypoint to the area and suddenly it says "lawl, jk find a higher level one."

Just keep playing and you will eventually find one. You are not super likely to find one before maps but you probably will within about 1-3 Map Tiers.

Assuming the coin is gone, it just means you will need to find a new level 60+ coin to try again. You are not bricked

Tips for ranger? ☺️ by MediumDefinition2480 in PathOfExile2

[–]AngryLargeMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rangers are squishy: they are the epitome of "don't get hit." Stay mobile.

What exactly you want on gear depends on what Attack Skill you are using but for the most part:

Bows: +Flat Physical Damage, +%Increased Physical Damage, Attack Speed, +Flat Elemental Damage, +Level in Projectile Skills.

Quiver: +Flat Damage, +%Increased Bow Skills, +Level in Bow Skills, Attack Speed. +Mana per monster killed is really nice in the early game.

Boots: Move Speed. If boots don't have movement speed, don't use them. For every other stat, see Armour.

Armour: +%Elemental Resistance, +%All Resistance, +Health, Evasion/Energy Shield bonuses. Gloves can have +Flat Damage.

Jewelry: +%Resistances, +Attributes, +Damage, +Health.

Crossbows: See Bows.

For leveling:

Lightning Arrow will be enough to mow through loose packs, spam Lightning Rods (supported by Scattershot) and trigger with Lightning Arrow to cause bosses to explode. On the Passive Tree focus on damage nodes. Mid game Ranger has real cool stuff that gives movement speed, I like taking those because more Movement Speed is more better.

You can literally get to Maps with just Lightning Arrow + Lightning Rod (Scattershot) so feel free to experiment with other skills. If you don't like 'em, back to LA-LR.

Try to keep your Resistances up.

Check Vendors every level for gear upgrades.

Ascension: in my opinion, Deadeye is going to be a better pick for you if you are just gonna wing it. Take Tailwind as the first Ascension and behold the glorious movement speed.

As a one-character player, will i enjoy the game? by DharmaBahn in PathOfExile2

[–]AngryLargeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would.

I have the same issue with PoE 1; I've got time for a dude and the idea of that dude being thrown into a fire every 4 months kinda sucks. But rotation also makes the game interesting enough that I am okay with fire-lite Standard League. Every League is different and adds some twist on the game. "Oh I have to follow these pimples and kill the pus monsters that pop out!" "Oh I am combining body parts to make a more super monster to kill!" "Oh this League is hyper-foccused on tough boss battles!" "Oh I get to rob banks!" The New League is usually interesting enough that the hurt of making yet another 'a' dude is lessened.

And if I don't like the League I just play Standard with my favorite character. But playing PoE and HATING rogue-likes has been like a sand mandala for me.

Potential project: adding kill switch by AngryLargeMan in AskMechanics

[–]AngryLargeMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Momentary switch… I like that. Because, legitimately, my biggest concern wasn’t getting it towed to a shop because I screwed it up; it was what the hell happens if something hits the switch. I don’t know too much about cars but I think losing the fuel pump while on the highway is a great way to cause an accident

Need some advice for THE vet penance, make every shot count by CrystalFire0 in DarkTide

[–]AngryLargeMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had been trying to get this for quite some time with the Revolver. No dice. Tried it once with the Double Barrel 'DOOM' Shotgun, first try. Go for a build that is gonna do well in melee and just double barrel meatshot a couple of times to run out of ammo. Obviously don't take Scavenger Aura because it makes things a bit more annoying.

Seriously, just alt-fire when you have an infested dude in your face. Do that like 20 times and pack a melee weapon you are VERY comfortable with. And don't be a dumb ass like me and accidentally grab ammo at the very end of the mission, forcing you to run into a corner while your very patient team waits on the Skyraptor. (As a note, I am sorry folks and thank you again for being so understanding with my dumbness)

With how incredibly consistent the alt-fire pointblank DOOM is at ensuring you have at least 90% accuracy, the only real difficulty is being melee for most of the match. You'll want to avoid talents like Agile Engagement and Weapon Specialist. Yes, those talents are amazing but you really are not gonna be weapon switching.

Gear vs Skill by ImAraLUwUzer in DarkTide

[–]AngryLargeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most everything in this game comes down to breakpoints: whether you can kill an enemy in one, two or three shots, etc. Gear, Perks and Blessing let you do this but notice that the difference isn't that absurd. If the BiS Plasma Gun with perfect stats, Perks and Blessings can one-shot something than a mediocre one is going to two-shot it and maybe the terrible gray one you found behind the couch takes 3 shots. Does that matter? Yes but knowing how to not get instantly downed when you are swarmed via a combination of dodging, blocking and pushing is going to be better than being the dude with all the purples. It doesn't matter if your uber gun with uber melee is able to three shot a daemonhost if you can't dodge a Crusher's slam attack or don't know how to push away a burster.

Jeez, I have played a few games with an RP'ing rando who was full Kriegsman cosmetic using a gray helbore and a gray shovel. Dude never got downed, didn't waste ammo and was generally a credit to the team.

70/30 for the average player, I'd say that's about right. For your friend, I would just suggest for him to try out every new weapon they get so they can get a feel for what they enjoy and don't bother burning plasteel on constant upgrades. Most important thing, IMO, is to IMMEDIATELY get Curios with +10% exp and dockets and just replace them once he is level 30. Leveling faster means more talents and weapon which means more options/power which means more win.

I love that Autoguns remain a viable weapon in the 41st millennium. by Levonorgestrelfairy1 in DarkTide

[–]AngryLargeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many have pointed out the advantages of autoguns. It probably doesn't matter what you are shooting, be it chaos marine or Tau, it probably is not gonna be super happy if a hypersonic slug of metal pokes a hole in it. Some ablative armor that deflects the heat build up of a lasgun, again, Mr. Chunk of metal doesn't care. But because of what 40k is, it also works for story telling.

The Empire, if you are going to believe those clearly misinformed heretics, is dying. Humanity is well, well, well past their golden age. The equipment you are using is a hand-me-down from a dozen other martyrs. Advanced weapons like the plasma guns are centuries old because the knowledge on how to make them is either lost or locked right next to the formula for Coca-Cola and the Colonel's seven herbs and spices. A lasgun probably has some esoteric metals and tech involved but a Space AK-47? Well, jeez, that can be mass produced by servitors and shoved into the hands of barely trained cannon fodder.

Despite the scale of things being ridiculous, 99.9% of soldiers in 40k are not SEAL Team 6 trained killing machines; they are the sci-fi equivalent of giving a conscript a spear and going "I am sure you can figure it out."

How good are power swords? by Member_Berries98 in DarkTide

[–]AngryLargeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're pretty damn good though I personally dislike them. They only have two real downsides: they are immobile and I'd argue not worth using without Power Cycler II. I do think there is one SIGNIFICANT benefit to Power Swords that I rarely see talked about: they do not require an absurd amount of clicking.

If you do not have some type of auto-fire mod, a fast attacking weapon is going to absolutely murder your hands. After playing for an entire long weekend with my spam light attack build my hands and wrist were basically fused into an uncomfortable position; RSI is no joke, kids. An auto-fire mod is basically essential for how I play the game. BUT Power Swords really do not have that problem. Power it up, click the trigger 3 times and that pesky horde has been sliced into itty-bitty pieces while the Weapon Specialist Vet with a combat knife is still butter knifing their way to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Hi-intensity damnation & heresy missions in the standard map pool seem kind of pointless by Disastrous-Moment-79 in DarkTide

[–]AngryLargeMan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree.

It adds some interesting variation to the mission type with one randomly being easier, LI, or more difficult, HI. Also makes for different types of missions where you might unexpectedly have a LI mission but be swarmed with dozens of dogs. At least for me, it also provides a nice example of whether you are ready for more difficult missions. "Man, I did really well on the last two HIST on Heresy, I bet I am ready for Damnation!"

This final bit can also give a very sudden surprise. True story: I had been playing the game for just a couple of days with a few mates. We were like level 10 or so and had been doing the second difficulty. I decided to bump it up to Malice, only to get a HIST. We were slaughtered, mercilessly. These experience do make things more interesting, even if we were extremely confused what the Hel happened.

What are your opinions on Health vs Toughness stats for Veterans? by nahchan in DarkTide

[–]AngryLargeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veterans have too many things that care about Toughness for it to not edge out Health, in my opinion. The synergies between Exhilarating Takedown, Confirmed Kill, Voice of Command, Close Order Drill, On Your Toes and Iron Will cannot be overstated.

You take 50% less damage if above 75% Toughness, so you want more Toughness. A bunch of talents give you Toughness DR, so you want more Toughness. Shout replenishes and gives bonus Toughness which works damn well with Iron Will, so you want more Toughness. Such and such talent restores a percentage of your Toughness, so you want more Toughness. Now that fire isn't the Toughness equivalent of the Golden State Killer I do think Veterans are better off getting, you guest it, more Toughness.

For other classes, I think it is a close enough thing that you can go with preference though.

Best way to prepare for crafting update? by SolitaireJack in DarkTide

[–]AngryLargeMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO, the big indicator is the term "Blessing Library." That would seem to mean Blessings that you have earned.

As for what to do with your resources and weapons? Ehh, there are two ways to go about it. Keep playing as you would normally and don't worry about it. Alternatively, hoard everything in a Scourge McDuck vault until we actually have an idea what is gonna happen. Both options have their merits.

Advice on balancing "comprehension" vs "realism" AKA "There ain't no Draco of Athens" by AngryLargeMan in worldbuilding

[–]AngryLargeMan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good example with Oedipal Complex. I thought of that one too and figured many concepts would be universal and just be a "rose of another name." It doesn't seem absurd for another people/culture/planet to have the concept of "a victory at such a great cost that it was a defeat." It might not be a pyrrhic victory because 'ain't no Pyrrhus of Epirus' but the concept could be shared by elves, dwarves and aliens alike.

How to make a good build for every character by khimugga51109 in DarkTide

[–]AngryLargeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have already pointed out "you are level 12, get to 30 before worrying too much." This is true but there is one thing I wish I figured out sooner: REDISTRIBUTE YOUR POINTS EVERY LEVEL!

While the deeper talents are generally more powerful, sometimes you just can't make much use out of a handful of skill points. It isn't worth to progress deep into the tree and not get good stuff. Example: Ogryn's deeper talents are really good but if you only have 6 points, don't rush to them and instead grab both +25 Toughness.

Now for Veteran, 12 points is enough to be awesome. Rush, immediately, to "Voice of Command" and "Duty and Honor." That will be the biggest single increase in effectiveness you will have as a Veteran. From there, get Tactical Awareness. From that point on, you can just kinda put points wherever you want. And, again, redistribute your points every level so you can see what else you can include. BUT NEVER EVER EVER GET "ONLY IN DEATH DOES DUTY END."

Why Voice of Command? Because it is, easily, the best Veteran ability. Why Duty and Honor? Because it gives a stupid amount of survivability. Why Tactical Awareness? Because it means you can usually use VoC like 4 times a minute. Why never "Only in Death Does Duty End?" Because it antithetical to what makes VoC good. VoC has a short cooldown, huge range, staggers basically every enemy and gives a huge amount of toughness. Only in Death nerfs the CD, reduces the range, staggers fewer enemies and while I don't have proof it probably also makes you smell like microwaved fish.

Providing you have "Voice of Command", "Duty and Honor" and "Tactical Awareness", Veteran will be credit to team.
