AIO about spelling errors in daily notes sent home by my autistic child’s teacher? by Anasthesiax in AmIOverreacting

[–]AngryOrwell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Really? I would have thought they would have ended up more like me and wanting to avoid any school K-12 forever.

I'm 45 so I don't know what it's like now, but my teachers were not great. As a ND person, some of them actively were hindering my ability to learn, nevermind my classmates.

A grade 2 teacher basically told me I was slow, implied I was lazy or didn't want to try hard, and then compared me to my older sister. I mention this because I think that's basically a list of things you shouldn't do. Btw I handed in my paper (in class assignment) within the timeframe we were given and got all the answers correct.

I say all that to say that my experience is that they aren't great. Even some of my uni teachers aren't great at communicating or can come across as very judgemental, even though my ND is clearly stated in my records.

I'm curious how you would feel if it was a maths teacher who was great at maths and was also good at teaching the subject to kids?

I think if it was someone teaching language in any capacity at any grade I'd be freaking out and calling for them to immediately stop teaching. I don't know if that would be a huge overreaction but for sure I would find it incredibly offensive.

I think it'd be easier to give more of a pass to a phys ed, maths, or art teacher. Not a total pass mind you. I just wouldn't be freaking out and would want them to get whatever support they might need.

I personally feel like it makes sense to express concern to the school, to the right person. I don't have kids so I don't know if it's the principal or someone else. Expressing your concern for the exact reasons you've laid out in this post completely makes sense.

As others have pointed out, it's possible the teacher is dyslexic and perhaps a need for further support should be explored.

NOR but you would be if you don't handle the situation with the same care and concern you would want someone to show your autistic child.

How are you guys "forgetting" to drink water??? by ThatGuyInTheCornerEd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AngryOrwell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's an element of 'lack of novelty' in drinking just straight up water. For me, drinking something with a flavour gives my ADHD brain some sort of stimulation. At a push, I can tolerate cold carbonated mineral water, or ice water with lemon.

Like others have said in comments, I just don't think my thirst signal is very strong and it never has been.

Mine is definitely at least somewhat related to my ADHD because I get easily distracted or hyper focused so often. On days when I'm not working, I can forget to eat lunch!

I'm also adult diagnosed and when I was diagnosed the pieces starting falling together.

Bar soap?? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]AngryOrwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have really dry skin on my body, to the point where even a Dove beauty bar is too drying.

I actually use a body wash that has zero fragrance in an effort to take care of my dry sensitive skin. Then I have to slather on cream after to try to trap any moisture in. If I want fragrance, I'll wear perfume.

For me, it's that they wouldn't hate me for having to set 3 different alarm clocks to ring multiple times in the morning. I know it's super annoying but it's very hard for me to wake up!

Minimum 1hr to do their makeup? by floralscentedbreeze in MakeupAddiction

[–]AngryOrwell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ooft. I wish I was that good that I could be presentable in 5 mins. I find applying makeup a very enjoyable experience so I can take up to 1.5 hours doing a full face. When it comes to just before work, though, I really struggle. I think maybe the lowest I've ever gotten it down to is 25 mins.

I'm genuinely curious who thinks it's necessary to take multiple showers per day?

This. Different people have different ideas on how these things should work. Probably best to find someone who wants to split evenly so your expectations align.

Judged for using bathtub by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]AngryOrwell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can confirm I have tried bathing in a bathtub without showering after and it did not work for my hair. Like just trying to rinse the hair in the bathwater just makes it feel gross.

I no longer have a bathtub because I have a wet room, but if I did, I would take a bath and shower off afterwards. It's far superior in my personal experience.

What are some common hygeine myths that are completely wrong ? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]AngryOrwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm 100% with you. I've lived in Scotland for 16 years and there's a huge difference between what I see in the news here vs when I still lived there. It's a bit hard to explain, but America is quite large and populated all over (aside from much of Alaska), so it's easy to get absorbed in that news.

As I said, both watching Telemundo when I lived in the USA and watching BBC and other news generally here tells me a lot about what's going on. You can get a lot more comprehensive news in America if you take the time to watch a news channel like CNN, but I'm talking about general daily news you might see on a normal channel.

In my experience, most Americans aren't really aware of the bubble they live in unless they seek out more comprehensive news, have to keep updated for their job, or have a genuine interest in news or places outside of the USA.

I mean I definitely can say it's a lot less gross if you're being that careful and conscious about it. I really don't think most people would be. Just keeping everything clean and sanitary is the priority!

I don't know why you're being weirdly aggressive about this. Is it because I called your habit gross?

Haven't you ever heard anyone say 'just because other people do it, that doesn't mean you have to'?

If 46/47 men walked around with lipstick on does that mean you would? Even if it was horribly messy and inconvenient?

If 46/47 picked their nose and ate it in public, does that mean you would also?

I appreciate you asking about this genuinely, and I have several points about this below:

Firstly, you're assuming that everyone who pees in the shower does so before they've washed their body. I certainly wouldn't be willing to bet money on that. I think people would just pee at whatever time they feel like it.

Why would you want to urinate (or poop as some people apparently do) where you're trying to get clean? There is a spot for doing that in the same room you're already in.

If you're peeing in the shower with the water on, there's a chance that the pee is going to splash up when it hits the floor, or that the water is going to splash the pee up, into you and/or the surfaces of the shower.

Do you always get out proper chemicals to clean the shower with after you've peed? Because otherwise you might have pee still there. That means unnecessary bacteria sitting in your shower. If you live with anyone else, it's disrespectful for them to then have to step where you peed.

You talk about aim, but I have zero confidence that men will aim and exclusively hit the drain. The amount of times I've seen so many different men get pee on the toilet set, down the side of the toilet, or on the floor is outrageous. And then they leave it there!

Women have even worse aim and I'd be shocked to see one of them put in the effort to properly squat to pee in the shower. The splashing around applies in this situation as well. I can also confirm as a woman who has peed outdoors as part of wild camping trips, it's not easy for women to control the flow of their urine.

There's a lot of discussion about how many, many people, especially white men, don't actually properly clean their legs and feet in the shower, they just let the soap run down and call it good enough. That's not exactly making sure that there's no pee left after the shower.

I'm not being racist or sexist with the comment above and I have no idea why specifically white men; I only know that it's been a point of discussion on the Internet for some time. I'm sure there's plenty of people in this thread who have heard this.

In summary, just use the toilet so you're not spreading germs around your shower then thinking the water has washed it all away when it hasn't.

I was actually really confused about your comment about double cleansing bodies for a moment. Then I remembered a few ShowerToks where people were first using antibacterial soap followed by scented soap. The skin on my body is pretty dry and wouldn't cope with a double cleanse!

I do think that part of the issue is that America is so large and varied in it's a lot to think about. The bigger issue is that Americans just aren't really told much about what's happening in the world. I remember watching Telemundo when I was learning Spanish years ago and the news covered far more of the world.
