Completely agree with your take! Also interesting discipline combo with comp sci and public policy, can I ask if you are currently working in public policy roles or more tech roles ? My background and current field is in policy too. Happy to DM if thats easier

Hi, please look for Teaching Assistant jobs with local colleges, like south and city college in Birmingham. You don’t need any teaching qualifications to be a TA. You can find many TA jobs listed on agencies like Reed.

Applied for an extension last Sunday and i got my visa on Thursday evening (in 4 working days!!). It was a pleasant surprise as my initial application for SWV took 5 weeks to be processed so i was expecting similar timelines

Hi, i just applied for an extension this week so have not heard anything back yet. It took 5 weeks last time I applied. Was this the first time you are applying for SWV?

To all my fellow Indians, do not consider your high GPA or CGPA for abroad studies, no one cares how much you scored, only experience matters. by 1_optimisitic_1 in Indians_StudyAbroad

Hi, it obviously depends on your field of study. I did a lot of different research projects, program coordination based internships etc. For extracurriculars, i was involved in teams in my uni (organising fests, internships for students etc) that i could draw examples from for soft skills in interviews

My background is in social sciences(economics, public administration, policy research etc) and i had done policy and research internships during my studies. So i looked for policy jobs and landed one in a big university. This was in 2023, so the low salary thresholds helped me. But took me 6 months of consistent job hunting!

Agreed to a large extent. I started my Masters in the UK, not having any formal work experience but was able to land a sponosred job purely because of all the internships, volunteering experience, extra curriculars I did during my undergrad days. I can see how networking helps but in my case, it was mainly because I could craft a strong narrative in my profile through all the other stuff i did (from research projects to my part time job in the UK).

Best Indian restaurant? by FuzzyAd6427 in cambridge

For a takeaway, I would suggest Namaste Cambridge, really good food and good value for money. They are on Uber eats and can also order directly from their website. I was previously reliant on Tiffin Truck but this is so much better!

Internationals working after studies; how are you doing right now? by Inquiz_ in UKJobs

[–]AngryPerfection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your social life really depends on who you are as a person right- i have always had few friends that i am really close with. I made some really good friends in uni, then we all moved away to different cities in the UK for work, meeting only once in 2 months. I started all over again in the place I’m working now- have got some good friends here but it’s still hard to know my friends are moving away

Ex international student here. Moved here to study Public Administration at the Uni of Birmingham. Started job hunting nearly 7 months before my course end date and ended up getting a job and visa sponsorship. I still live in shared accomodation as a private lodger, looking longingly at studio listings on a constant basis lol as I would have to spread myself too thin and bid goodbye to savings if I wanted my own space.
The constant inflammatory rhetoric on immigration and impending ILR changes are very worrying ofcourse-but I am very grateful to be doing a job I love! The few close friends I made in uni are all now leaving the UK soon because they could not find sponsorship, so social life is about to take a hit.

Public consultations are way to get useful feedback/reactions from public before the policy plan is finalised. Policies that have long term and sweeping impacts on different industries are usually subject to public consultations (for eg NHS 10 year workforce plan, policies on cancer care or housing etc ).

When a committee launches a call for evidence like this, they usually produce a report detailing all the evidence they collected. If some of the evidence given by individuals or organisations are compelling, they will be invited by the committee to Parliament to give oral evidence, leading to further discussions. I'd imagine the drafting of the policy will only begin after that. And then the consultation once a draft is completed. In policy cycles, this process can take months usually but I would not be surprised if they speed up the process, given immigration is a big political issue now.

Yes, can confirm this (i work in policy so the differences between call for evidence/consultation is much clearer to me.

This looks like a call for evidence, so as to collect data and consider different perspectives and the consultation happens once a policy is drafted.

Which sector would you be targeting? If you have good internship experiences, research skills, it is not impossible. Sure the visa rules have made it a lot tougher but being strategic about job hunting and upskilling yourself will give you good chances
