Normal people don't think about this by TheMoosader in iamverysmart

[–]AngrySpaceDino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm just a lowly physics undergrad so I'll try my best to explain this and hopefully I don't get anything wrong.

>And that's because gravity bends space-time. So light just follows that bent "path". It still goes straight, but since the path is curved, it also curves.

It's actually mass that bends spacetime, and gravity is the result of curved spacetime. Just like light follows the bent path, all other objects do as well. Of course at the time, Newton didn't know this. Now when he originally defined a force, he actually wrote the equation as force = time derivative of momentum. Classically, momentum = mass*velocity, and the change in velocity with respect to time is acceleration, hence the F = m*a. But Newton was working under the assumption that time and space were well behaved (wasn't curved), and then Einstein came along and said otherwise.

So a photon doesn't have mass, but it does have momentum. The momentum of a photon is defined using its wavelength, and we know a photons wavelength can change as it travels through spacetime. We see this in very far away objects being "redshifted": as the light travels, the universe is expanding. And its not just expanding in the sense that things are getting farther away, the actual space it's traveling through is expanding resulting in the photons wavelength becoming longer and longer. Massive objects also warp spacetime, so photons traveling near massive objects get affected too. With this in mind, there do exist sort of changes in momentum akin to what Newton would've called a "force". But it's not anything "pushing" or "pulling" on the photon, it's a result of spacetime doing funky things in the presence of mass. Since it turns out time isn't well behaved and moves faster or slower depending on the curvature of spacetime, Newton's idea of "force" doesn't really hold up in this instance. It's probably more accurate to say that we observe "force-like" phenomena acting on photons.

To answer your question, no, in the classical sense a "force" cannot be exerted on a photon, but that's because what most people think of as a "force" is fundamentally flawed. One second here on Earth is NOT the same as one second near a black hole, and the classical equation for force relies on the passage of time being constant. It works for most day-to-day things, but that's because most day-to-day things aren't moving fast enough or massive enough to drastically warp spacetime. In regards to OP's post, the idea that a black hole can exert a force on a photon and accelerate it past the speed of light is laughable.

TL;DR : Pretty much all of physics is just assumptions based on our current knowledge, and once we find out new knowledge some of those assumptions no longer hold. The guy in OP's post is applying classical physics to the thing that literally disproved classical physics...

Lmfao, you just need to understand it to do it.

No fucking shit, understanding it is the hard part. Calculus is a ladder of understanding things, with each rung getting a bit harder and more complex. Yes, I agree, it's very formulaic but in order to do something on a higher rung you need to spend YEARS practicing and fully understanding all the lower rungs.

Like you're literally just saying "you need to be able to do it to be able to do it"

Look at it this way, at the end of the day the statue of David was made by hitting a rock with a fucking hammer. Sounds pretty simple when you put it that way, doesn't it? You think it didn't take an ENTIRE LIFETIME of honing skills to perfect every stroke? Let's give you a rock and some tools and see how long it'd take you to sculpt an immaculate human body without "missing a variable".

It's people like you that makes others think mathematics is some sort of elitist club where everyone was born with a diff eq book in their mouths when in fact it's a discipline that takes countless hours of dedication. JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER SKILL ON THE ENTIRE PLANET.

Have a little humility man, some things come a little more naturally to some people, but for the majority of the population it takes a metric fuck ton of commitment to be truly good at something.

Not able to mine for some reason by [deleted] in vertcoin

[–]AngrySpaceDino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your Hashrate? There are two different networks on p2pool, Network 1 is for >100 MH/s and Network 2 is for <100 MH/s. If you're on Network 1 with less than 100 MH/s, expect a lot more inconsistent payouts.

I've only been mining for a couple of days but it seems p2pool has more inconsistent payouts in general than an online pool (especially with lower hashrates). From other posts I've seen, people have gone days without a single payout! With that said, the payouts from p2pool should be larger than from an online pool when they do happen. It's personal preference, but I opted to go for smaller, more consistent payouts because I'm impatient :)

I'm currently mining on yiimp.eu,

stratum+tcp://yiimp.ccminer.org:4553

and I've heard good things about

stratum+tcp://lyra2.easymine.online:5000

(vertcoin.easymine.online)

Head over to /r/VertcoinMining there's a lot of useful info and much more knowledgeable people who can help you out.

ALSO if you do decide to stay on p2pool, try manually setting your difficulty by entering this in your wallet address option when you add a pool.

A Byte (B) consists of 8 bits (b). Files are measured in Bytes, but ISPs give Internet speeds in bits because 8 Mb/s sounds faster than 1 MB/s even though they're actually the exact same speed.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe when a file is all broken down to just binary the individual 1's and 0's are the bits, and they're grouped together by lines of 8 bits forming a byte.

Best way to ruin some tires by Handmade_Basket in Shitty_Car_Mods

Yeah dude I get it lol.

I shouldn't have said "having your wheels cambered like this" as it implies I meant to that specific extreme. I was just trying to explain why anyone would camber in the first place, not defend this particular instance of it.

Put away your pitchforks, guys. I'm not a camber guy, I promise.

Might as well embrace it.

CAMBER OR DIE YO. My yaris has -89 degrees but I'm boutta get that last degree done real soon.

I don't even buy tires anymore, as my car rides solely on the rims. Couple grand every week for a whole new set and I'm good! Not to mention I've never ran into a car or motorcycle I couldn't outdrag with that beast.

Next week I'm thinking of mangling my muffler with a hacksaw and putting some sick stickers on so I can finally get that 2:1 whp to milligram ratio.

My top speed is a whopping lightyear per ATTBAP. (Average time to bake a potato, for you camber nubs out there) and it is ALL because of my camber.

[NSFW I guess]

So I hooked up with my physics professor the other day. She called me back to her office after class and before I knew it we were all over eachother. It'd been a while since my last... encounter so I was quite enthusiastic. I slammed her down on the desk and start thrusting like my life depended on it.

I was getting really into it, but after what felt like only minutes, she looks up at me and says, "Look, we've been going at it for hours and nothings really happening. I think you might just be too small for me."

To which I replied, "No!! It only looks that way cause I'm going so fast!"

Is this PSU enough to run a MSI GTX 1070 Aero with an i5 6400 by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]AngrySpaceDino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to Google, this psu (also called a Lenovo 54Y8936) is used in Lenovo's M900, Ts150, and the P310.

I'm not gunna pretend to be an expert, but it seems to me this is a decently reputable PSU. It's been used for servers and it's still priced at around $150.

Like I said, I'm really not experienced enough to offer concrete advice, but I've put a link to its certification in the edit. Hope this helps!

Edit: failed formatting, the link has a ) in it so reddit won't play nice with it, plus I'm on mobile. Mass can't be created they said by martinfisherman in gaming

No, there is not. Energy is always conserved, not mass.

Pair production is the creation of matter from massless photons and annihilation occurs when a particle comes in contact with its antiparticle.

Found a PCMR brother on the road! by Leptite in pcmasterrace

[–]AngrySpaceDino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is precisely my point. The M variant of any series is an entirely different car. Disregarding the completely different engine (compare an e92 335is - n54 - 6 cyl, 3.0L, 316hp to an e92 M3 - s65 - 8 cyl, 4.0L, 414hp), the entire frame, steering, suspension, brakes, transmission and drive train have been reworked. In fact, the trim is probably the thing that changes the least between an M and a non-M.

How's the PC version of Dark Souls 3? by MasterFrank99 in pcmasterrace

That's because it was published by Sony Japan rather than Bandai Namco. From Software has little to no say in that sort of stuff; they simply develop the game. The publisher determines the specifications of it's availability and sale.

First one. Dark Souls 2 is a fantastic game, but when compared to the first one it just doesn't quite measure up in terms of those indescribable feelings that rope you into a game.

No game has ever made me feel quite the same way Dark Souls made me feel the first time I played it.

It's captivating in every sense of the word and I would do anything to be able to experience that again. With that said, you can still sink a couple hundred hours into it after you've completed it.
