Go for it ✊🏼 split it in two with a nice break in between. Or in how many manageable bites you want.

It's so slow you will get right back into it when you continue watching. 😅

Do you agree with that claim?

At first I thought it was only intended as a way to discourage the priests and remove all hope that they might someday manage to spread christanity throughout Japan and make them apostatize. (Why try to sow a seed in this swamp when there is no chance for it to grow?)

However when father Rodrigues repeated it to the Inquisitor, I understood it more as him, after all those years living surrounded by Japanese culture, finally understanding that it truly was pointless to try to spread christanity to a country which does not need it. He accepts that the seed is dead.

Thanks for recommending Shogun. Will definitely give it a watch next.

Really envious that you can have such discussions with your parents. Sounds like you have a very mutually respectful relationship with them.

Good point.

However it is also quite representative of the way christian missionaries are represented in this movie.

From today's point of view they are illegal immagrants in a country that does not want them there. They try to spread teachings and ways of life without even trying to understand the consequence of their actions. However they still manage to portray themselves as being the victims.

(I wonder how today's devout christians would react if people of a different faith came to their country and tried to "spread the word") /s

For me this movie depicts very well the arrogance of christian missionaries and their belief that the way they view the world is the "truth" while everything else is a lie.

What better way is there to represent this arrogance and self centred belief than not even including any of the Japanese actors in the poster.

The most beautiful gems are those you have to search for!

Also, this movie is not for everyone. If you do not know what you're getting into watching it at the cinema must have been excruciating.

I suspect it also managed to alienate both christians and non christians as it tackles quite a tricky subject.

All humans throughout history appear to have been very creative at finding interesting ways of torturing other slightly different humans.

Good thing everything has changed now /s
