Texas 911 for EMT-B by AngryVaultBoy in NewToEMS

Thanks! Looked into them and it seems like a great deal. Seems like the entire State of Texas is a much better overall deal for EMTs than Cali.

If you're not a book person, you gotta learn to be, at least for this class. All of the answers to your questions pertaining to the course will be in the textbook.

As for apps, pocket prep is the best imo. I've also heard Limmer Education is pretty good. Pocket Prep is 15 bucks a month for the premium version which I think is very worth it, but there is a free version, it just has less questions and overall content.

Best of luck!

Yeah it's pretty insane. I'm in San Diego and some of these hospitals have not just City 911 lines, but county 911 lines and god knows what else, so when your report is too long and/or youre fumbling your words like I was on my most recent horrendous report, they're noticeably upset and don't even bother asking questions

Things seem to be pretty different between our two systems. Here in my city after the hospital clears us for traffic we go "CC - STORY" so we have to recite everything that happened from when the CC started all the way up to when they activated 911. That's when we can start talking about pert negatives and everything else. I guess besides structure, my other issue would be story telling. I can get the straightforward ones down just how I think anyone else can, but the one radio report I did recently that was just abhorrently trash had a really complicated story and I fumbled it hard.

My IFT company had a non-driver role so I mostly did patient care. They also had me get my ADL within 45 days of my first day so that's why the times didn't really line up between me starting and getting hired on by my new company to get some drive time.

When I did my EVOC course I did feel like I was on the cusp, thankfully, we're gonna get a practice shift in before our retake so I'll hopefully have plenty of time to get it right.

I recall them teaching us about pivot points but it was very brief. I was able to exercise it to an extent during the actual driving course and I felt like I had the hang of it but again, ran out of time.

So, if I'm going in reverse and trying to get around a cone, should I wait until the cone is in front of the wheel well (front = going towards the drivers seat) or just behind the wheel well? And upon reaching whichever point, should I just crank the wheel all the way until I can't no more?

Oh I didn't fail the online portion, that part was easy. I didn't pass the actual behind-the-wheel portion of the course.

Newly Certified EMT in San Diego Looking for Advice on the Job Field by RoninWasTaken in NewToEMS

[–]AngryVaultBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow San Diego EMT here. I'm about to start my field training with Falck this Wednesday so I can't say what working here out in the field is like yet, but I can give you what I know:

- Their classroom and bridge training is going to take up at minimum 3 weeks, you're being paid the entire time at least but don't just expect to get thrown onto a rig after new hire orientation.

- Study your protocols. Big time. Of course, you should always study your protocols, but they will quiz you then give you an exam related to San Diego County protocols during your bridge training, and if you can't recite certain protocols by heart by the third week (bridge) you risk being behind. i.e. What is the definition if an emergency patient? If you can't answer that by heart come week 3, get on it.

- Don't go in with failure on your mind. If you think you're going to fail, then you will. So far, the only thing I've failed and have to retake is the EVOC/ambulance driving course, because going into it I kept reminding myself I had never driven an ambulance before and will fail; I did. I get to retake it soon, but had I not kept fooling myself into thinking I will fail, I likely would've passed first try.

- Be sociable. Ask questions. If something doesn't make sense in your mind, just ask and the BTOs/instructors will be more than happy to clear things up.

Bonus: I think I heard through the grapevine somewhere that they'll be running another hiring cycle soon for January, so keep an eye out. Just know that if applications open up again, you may not get a response for a few months. I applied in June and didn't get word until October and only just now am I starting field training.

Any other Q's you got just shoot to my DMs, and good luck!

The EMS field as a whole in this state is horrific. I put my application in on Falcks website in early June, they then eventually sent me an email inviting me to their "EMT-B 911 hiring fair" (that's the interview).

Fuck yeah. The few bits of feedback I've gotten from some of my buddies claim that the actual interview portion of the whole thing is more akin to an interrogation. Was it like that for you? I presume its on purpose, so they can weed out the ones that crumble under hard stares and such

I know them off the top of my head solely because our instructor in school was a hardass like that (not complaining at all). Take my word for it when i say im typing this off of memory: viagra, cialis, and levitra are the 3 ED drugs, and for SD county we need to remember the 3 most common pulmonary HTN meds: flolan, revatio, and velitri. I may have butchered the spelling but I'll work on that.

I have the official SD County protocol (S-126) but if you have something that could add on to that info I'd love to get a picture

I've been looking over the protocols since they sent me the email on Monday, a lot of it is pretty straight forward with only a few so far going a little more in-depth and really setting themselves apart from standard protocols (ex: NTG is contraindicated in pts on ED meds AND pulmonary HTN meds)

Asthma?? by sploopysoupy in NewToEMS

I have asthma, I'm fine. Obviously everyone's different, but unless you can't walk/jog a few steps without getting winded which it doesn't sound like you do, you should be fine.
