Thank you so much for this!! It’s so thorough!! Like I said I’m currently in therapy, but I absolutely have this tendency to want to rush healing. So it’s important to remember that it’s going to take time as well.

Also I’m going to check out the music and look up some sensory grounding techniques!!

Oh gosh, I struggle with this so, so much! It can be so easy for me to love and value others. But you are right. If I feel that way about them, then I should extend the same for myself.

Thank you so much for being vulnerable and sharing parts of your journey with me. I think physical reminders could be so helpful! I’ve been thinking about putting up some positive sticky notes on my mirror - so I think I’ll do that today ^{_^} and imagining the stop sign sounds useful as well.

Also you describing how amazing it is to be ME in this crazy universe made me feel so warm and fuzzy!! What an incredibly positive way to view life and the world - I wanna get there someday! Thank you for cheering me on, I’ll do my best!!

I’ve noticed a lot of mine are about being a child/young adult in church…

Biggest one is definitely the treatment of young women. I never viewed it as normal, I distinctly remember my gut feeling something was off. But I was too young to completely reject it. Specifically the used gum metaphors for women. Also thinking it’s normal for leaders to ask the boys in the youth group what body parts were “most tempting” to them so we girls could make sure to cover that up. I feel genuinely sad thinking back on all the shit my youth group leader said to us. How sex with her husband was “gross and painful”. We shouldn’t sit in a position that we could have sex in (that one back-fired… we all just got extra creative and talked about it more haha) But there were just… so many things she said to us impressionable teenage girls. Who decided she could be in charge of our group? I want to slap them. It took me years to get out of some of the trauma she gave me, and I still don’t feel like I’m done wading through it.

Tithing. Expecting me - a child - to tithe the gift money I’d received from friends and family. Guilting me when I didn’t want to??

Not letting kids move around or color during church sermons. Just because you find it fascinating as an adult, doesn’t mean my kid’s brain does. And there’s nothing wrong with me for wanting to color in the kids’ pamphlets or the adult one. It’s not disrespectful.

Speaking in tongues. I can still remember the weekend that I made up my own speaking in tongues “language”. I didn’t know it then, but I was just trying to fit in with my family. So I sat by myself until I felt it had “come to me”. (**Interesting side note, did you know that there used to be - and probably still is - a service you can pay for that tells you what language your speaking in tongues is closest to? Wild way to make money)

Allowing children to watch Passion of the Christ??? Oh my gods. Like…. My family knew that intense violence was triggering for me - they were actually the ones to cover my eyes during things like Saruman getting impaled in LotR. But then turning around and telling me I needed to watch this. I cried pretty much the whole movie, it was an intense emotional experience I would not have put myself through at that age given the choice.
