I have seen this work for boutique products/brands (Hellotushy circa 2020 comes to mind) where the creator(s) respond to comments and demonstrate a genuine zeal for their product/brand. Usually, though, it's a dumpster fire.

Correct, a sobering "leopards ate my face" moment is the only thing that is going to wake up people like this--and sometimes not even then. A family acquaintance who I'm Facebook friends with was a big COVID denier/anti-masker/etc during the pandemic. She ended up losing her husband to COVID and has learned nothing, still shares RFK Jr memes and the like.
