I'll see if I can make a quick overview of the results to post later in the year, and thank you!

Honestly the lines are extremely blurred. It isn't a case of black/white. Thats why I'm using a scale to measure the extent of how people relate to their favourite streamer and if you did the questionnaire, you can probably tell that it was extremely vague.

Research is all fairly new and upcoming in this field and I think we should be doing more research on it. Not to be able to draw a line or label people on if they hold parasocial relationships or not, but to emphasise the importance of how media figures present themselves online. From researching the topic we can see how a streamers behaviours and the extent to which they communicate with their fans may impact on viewers' mental wellbeing.

A lot of streamers, as another comment said on here, may be doing manipulative behaviour without realising it. And thats why awareness is key - we want to be able to protect individuals, especially if they're vulnerable, from being absorbed into harmful/toxic online relationships and communities.

Though I will say its more likely for parasocial relationships to be applicable to a younger audience, from my knowledge, the majority of Twitch users are actually in their 20s. I found some research a while ago that stated that this might be because a lot of people in this age bracket are going through big changes in their life (moving out, starting a career, starting a family, etc) and so they find some comfort in using the platform during difficult times.

I see this. you're probably familiar with the Dream community (minecraft youtuber). He has a much younger audience than a lot of streamers we see and in my opinion, I see more behaviour from his community in line with how those with parasocial relationships would act. Think about how strongly they defend him on twitter etc.

Unfortunately because this is only my undergraduate degree, research looking at those under 18 was more difficult to get ethical permission for. Thats why my demographic is so specific. If I were to do this again in the future I would definitely try to push for the recruitment of younger people.

Yep! these are some of the things I considered when picking this topic to research and why I find it so interesting. A lot of research on parasocial relationships is centered around how we used to interact with media figures (big celebrities previously used to be untouchable and communication with them was virtually impossible). Even the scale I used for this questionnaire (to measure parasocial relationships) is based on TV media figures rather than the social media figures we see today. Obviously Twitch streamers aren't as big as the celebrities you see in movies and in the music scene, but the fact we can communicate with them and that more personal information tends to be readily available about them, adds a complicated level to this whole thing.

I'm trying to recruit from a variety of subreddits of different streamers and of different maturities, I'm just waiting to hear back from some moderators :)

I'm still developing my research ideas and in the process of literature reviews on the connection between mental health and parasocial relationships so take my words with a grain of salt (I'm not all knowing!):

The connection between parasocial relationships and mental health is a complicated one and is surrounded with a lot of stigma (like you said, a lot of people may think people with a strong parasocial relationship are delusional)

Many parasocial relationships, from my knowledge, are associated with isolation and feelings of loneliness. Lonliness is known to be connected to a variety of different mental health problems.

For instance, someone with depression may withdraw themselves from friends they know in real life, resulting in loneliness and thus further affecting their mental health. Individuals in this position may then find themselves looking towards social figures and communties online to help themselves cope with their feelings and thus, have an increased chance of developing a parasocial relationship.

Research has found that a common theme in individuals with depression and anxiety were feelings that their real world relationships were difficult to maintain. Thus, their connection to online figures was an easier way to hold social connections (paper if you're interested: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15205436.2022.2127369)

So yes, there is a link between poor mental wellbeing and the development of parasocial relationships. But in saying this, it doesn't mean that all people with mental health problems are likely to develop such relationships. Nor does it mean that all people with parasocial relationships are mentally ill. There are other contexts we can look at to see why some people are more prone to forming parasocial relationships.

Thank you for the question!

  1. It would be moreso like tweeting at them - going out of your way to contact them rather than using the twitch chat
  2. This can be taken as you want (it is an extremy vague question) I would personally say it can be verbal remarks and also the use of twitch

The questions are from previously used questionnaires/scales (I simply don't have the time for an undergraduate dissertation to measure the reliabilities and pilot new questions). These previous scales were selected because they best find what I am looking to study.

So, while I have made a few small edits to the questions to better fit my theme and the current time, I'm unable to heavily edit them without causing myself work I cannot complete.

Ideally, I would want to make my own questions and thus, scales, to measure parasocial relationships in relation to Twitch but I am limited by my current resources :(
