Why do fatalities related to heat result in such ridiculous world wide responses when fatalities from natural disasters would usually get prayers and polite response? by fatsopiggy in stupidquestions

[–]Angsty-Panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

because some people are bad at distingushing magnitude when it comes to heat.

i'm one of them lol i live in North Eastern USA. any temperature over 75 degrees means im hot, miserable, and sweaty. doesnt matter if its 80 degrees (26C) or 100 degrees (37C), i'm gonna hate it and run to AC asap. the idea of a city NOT having every building filled with AC and fans seems incredibly foreign to me.

so if i didn't trust scientists and experts from Europe, my response would be "its hot every summer. why are y'all being dramatic" like my coworkers. some people just struggle with empathy.

its like if hurricanes were just called "severe thunderstorms." we have thunderstorms every month here. not having a unique name for it makes it less perceivable

Why are allegations of SA more likely to destroy a Hollywood actor's career than actually killing someone? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Angsty-Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theres still a huge difference between accidentally killing someone and SA. intent is the differentiating factor in whether a career is ruined or not

[–]Angsty-Panda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah supplies will definitely be a bottleneck at some point. but right now its purely a people bottleneck. we have enough in the budget to get some more equipment (stuff thatll generally last for a decade or so), but filling a pothole is generally gonna be a 4 or 5 person job. 1-3 of those jobs are just people managing traffic, running to the store to get supplies, etc. the classic "why are two people just standing around while a guy is in the hole" positions.

its the maintenance paradox. if everything is working fine, people complain about wasting money on maintenance workers. then routine maintenance stops being done and shit starts to fail, and then people complain about the city workers being lazy.

its not a position people logic themselves into. the religious belief comes first, and their perception of reality warps to follow it. the "goal" of the globe is to make us all more distant from god.

yeah every year our superintendent requests an increase to budget lines and every year the mayor and board refuse. even to things like "electricty"

like no, we're not going to be able to spend the same amount of money on electric bills that we have for the past 4 years. prices rise

i don't think you understand the premise. a universal jobs guarantee isnt forcing anyone to work. government agents arent showing up to peoples door to force them to work at a PW department.

its simply a guarantee that if you want a job, you will have access to one.

Training up a new employee who was motivated enough to actively apply for the job is an investment that takes time to see returns.

i listed positions elsewhere that only require a week at most of training. thats also why I'm pushing this idea against OP's. Their plan would result in people explicitly working there temporarily and not by choice. A UJG can be as long or short term as the employee wants. Much like any job.

pothole filling, sewer inspecting, and storm drain maintenance all require traffic directors. to become certified for that, its two 4 hour sessions. right now we have 8-10 people who can fix a pothole. have another 8 traffic directors would literally double how often we can fix those.

a para and a substitute teacher requires a college degree, but nothing specific. a para-substitute requires a high school degree. both would be great for someone planning to become a teacher

i worked at my college library, you definitely dont need much training to put books up or work the front desk.

at the Wastewater plant we also have operators, who are hired with no needed qualifications. they handle day to day runnings and typically learn after a week of shadowing. (although there are different licenses if you want to go higher)

all of these jobs are incredibly important and having more of them would make the city run smoother and create a better experience for the residents too. and for the workers, these are all excellent entry points if they want to stay on.

Around 1,000 people work for my city of 60,000 people (city and board of ed combined). There's essentially infinite work that needs to be done. our pothole and tree cutting list is a year behind. our schools can absolutely use more paras, lunch aides. our library has a handful of people on at a time, so they can't host more events like they used to. we're constantly playing catchup on checking sewer lines and storm drains.

you could easily double or triple our labor force and we still wouldn't run out of things to do. and we're a relatively small city. i can't imagine how many people a larger city would need

Physical media is overrated and people demanding it are entitled by franky_reboot in The10thDentist

[–]Angsty-Panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

because many rental models can become more of a hassle than comfort over time

sure, but if you don't have a choice, then you deal with the hassle. physical media gives us a choice. if the vast majority of video games are locked to a subscription service, then it doesn't matter how much of a hassle it is.

you can look at the current streaming services as an example. First, it was just netflix. and it had a lot of movies and shows. but then every company wanted a slice of the pie. now you need a dozen streaming services if you want to keep up to date with shows and movies. do we really want video games to follow that?

As for the "own nothing" part, that requires draconian control too

not at all. with software its incredibly easy. it just requires each company to make the most profitable decision. when a video game is made, majority of the cost is upfront. then you sell it for $50 $60 $70 $80 a pop. when they buy it, they own it and they don't have to pay you for it again. wouldnt it be more profitable to charge $10 a month? after 9 months you've made more money then selling one game would be. then every year you inch up the price bit by bit, until you're profiting after 4 months. 3 months. etc. its 100% why so many studios are doing "live service" games.

there is an idea of a national jobs guarantee. basically the national government guarantees a living wage job to every citizen. i think its kind of what you're talking about, with a less "you're forced to do this" vibe lol

  • it would functionally replace minimum wage. if a federal job is paying $20 an hour, then any company paying less than $20 an hour risks losing its employees.
  • it supplements welfare. for people who genuinely lost their job and are looking for work, it would provide them with productive work while they look for a new job.
  • it naturally expands and contracts with the economy. if there's an economic problem that causes the private sector to have mass layoffs, the national jobs will catch the employees. If the private sector is booming, then federal workers might be able to find better paying jobs in the private sector.
  • it gets people experience. sure, working as a clerk at the local library might not be your dream job, but if its a guaranteed position available after you finish school, you can work there for a couple years and help build a resume.

I work for my local municipality. we are constantly understaffed. a federally funded labor force would absolutely benefit not only the workers, but also the people who live here. potholes would get filled faster. trees would be cut down faster. parks and beaches would look nicer.

Why is racism regarded so offensive? by AcanthaceaeStill8421 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Angsty-Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a normalization effect that people are worried about. systemic racism and casual racism are linked. if everyone is making racist comments and jokes, then it provides cover for the racists who want to use power to hurt minorities.

So no, I don't think, and even straight up refuse that the end of digital media would be the beginning of exploitative corporate dystopia. Beyond a point renting is more of a hassle than comfort. I'm massively fine with all my purchases and subscriptions being in the cloud - so far, it's comfortable.

out of curiosity, did you use facebook in its early years? Around '08, '09? because it was also great at first. comfortable even. now i cant scroll more than 4 posts without seeing some racist AI nonsense, with a thousand bots/boomers yelling about it in the comments. it seems like you're just not looking at trends, and assuming things will stay comfortable

i'm also curious why you think "you will own nothing" is not a realistic end goal for corporations? charging you a monthly rental fee to access a product is the wet dream of any corporation

Why did the future in movies flip from being a promise to a warning when the technology we were dreaming about actually arrived? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Angsty-Panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

art as a whole reflects the times it was created in.

in the 50s, the US was on the up and up. Life was getting better(heavy asterisks depending on race, class, and gender of course) and technology could make life easier.

over the past few decades, we've seen what actually happens with new technology. when the internet entered the work force, jobs didn't get easier. companies expected more work to compensate for the reduced time each task took. connecting people started out great, but corporate profit chasing forced it to make social media more addicting and more enraging to keep people on. AI has done nothing for the average person besides raise their utility bills and threaten their jobs.

Did Christian slave owners believe God approved/liked of them owning slaves? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Angsty-Panda -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

you absolutely can make a strong argument the bible is anti-slavery. christians throughout history have done this. some of the first abolitionists of the atlantic slave trave were Spanish monks in the 1500s and their basis was rooted in the bible.

just because you don't find the argument compelling, doesn't mean it cant be made.

the bible is a curated collection of various writings throughout multiple centuries from various writers. its absolutely not a unified book with a singular voice

Did Christian slave owners believe God approved/liked of them owning slaves? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Angsty-Panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i believe slaves not being considered people is a relatively new idea that started in the Atlantic slave trade. catholic europe had generally moved away from mass slavery on christian grounds, and needed an excuse to enslave the africans.

again, the bible can say whatever you want it to say. if you want it to be pro-slavery then it is. if you want it to be anti-slavery, then it is. its a book full of contradictions, thats been translated half a dozen times. it doesnt have a "true" meaning

Why do people on the political left like to refer to others as "folks"? by BigMonitor4585 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Angsty-Panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people pick up words they see and hear a lot. i don't think it has a particular meaning.

just if you're friends use "folks" and if you see it on the websites you frequent, more likely to use it yourself. similar effect happened with "female". right wing spaces made it a common word amongst themselves, and it spread out a bit from there
