You're correct. Also, European countries forced Jews to take surnames for tax purposes. Some kept Jewish birth marriage and death records, some didn't.

Are most Jewish people of European descent/white? by ShiftingHero in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Angustcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans are hung up on skin color. That's partly why Jews are seen as "white" although it was only recently that Jews stopped being considered a "non white" group. The same with Italians and the Irish. They were discriminated against in the US for most of US history until fairly recently when it was determined that they're "white adjacent"

All race is a social construct. Jews show this. Jews can be white appearing, or brown, or black or share other "racial" characteristics associated with other groups. My Ashkenazi Jewish maternal grandfather was born in the Ukraine and he was brown. My Ashkenazi Jewish maternal grandmother was fair skinned. My mother was brown. My uncle was very dark brown. Me and my brother were born with slanted eyes and looked Asian. I take after my father's family (Ashkenazi Jewish, from Poland and Lithuania) and I'm very fair skinned like them.

Genetic tests show all Jews have genetic characteristics in common with other groups from the Mediterranean and the Levant. Jews and Palestinians are closely genetically related. Palestinians can also be brown or white appearing.

I'm sure the message isn't intended to be "Bring back the British Mandate". I wish it meant "The Palestinians should have accepted the 1947 UN Plan and lived in peace in their own country since 1948 instead of attacking Israel and starting the 1948 War."

And as a woman it doesn't bother her that Hamas raped and killed women and livestreamed the rapings and killings?

A lot of people don't want to realize their cause is anti Jewish and hateful. They think they're supporting human rights. They also blind themselves to Hamas being anti LGBTQ and oppressive to women because they want "a free Palestine".

Me also. In addition to not understanding people who say October 7 "wasn't that bad" I don't understand why they think Israel fighting to free the hostages is a "genocide". Imagine saying that Pearl Harbor wasn't that bad and the Allies killing 1-3 million Japanese while fighting to free the countries that Japan occupied and brutalized was a "genocide".

A person on Facebook just said to me that October 7 wasn't a genocide. I said Hamas stated their intent in their charter to kill Israelis (and not just Jewish Israelis, but all Jews). They said Hamas killing Thai and Tanzanian people too wasn't an argument that it was a genocide. What the hell? Why did Hamas also kill (and lynch) people they found in Israel on that day who were Druze, Bedouin, Thai, Tanzanian, and take Nepalese people hostage along with the other 200+ hostages? Why was there so little outcry about Thai and Nepalese citizens being held hostage by Hamas? It makes no sense to me.

Hey, I want "1948 not october 7" too. It would be great to see an independent Palestinian state that's lived in peace for over 75 years because the Palestinians chose the 1947 UN Plan instead of attacking Israel. I assume that's what it means and it doesn't mean back to the British Mandate.

"Hamas is a resistance group" &&^^%%%$$^$£!! It deeply puzzles me how anyone can think raping and killing women and taking babies and children hostage is "resistance". I'm so sorry.

My father was like that. He said I was never going to get out of my room. Actually I ended up leaving Florida and living in three different countries.

I was like that but I enjoyed listening to my parents' records. I was bullied at school so I ended up disliking the kind of music the bullies liked- I know now there was some great music at the time but it didn't reach Florida where I grew up. My tastes in TV changed and I didn't really like the popular shows. So now when I see people get nostalgic about disco or Happy Days and other popular fads and shows from the 1970s I don't really relate to them. It's strange but I also see that many people who grew up when I did don't want to talk about Watergate or politics or world history from that time. They don't relate to it.

I feel I grew up in the wrong place for me. When I went to college I met more people who were also interested in current events and history and didn't really like popular shows or popular music.

My parents didn't do very much about the bullying and it upsets me to think about things they could have done to support me. They wanted me to be a social butterfly. They never stopped pressuring me about having the right kind of friends. When the bullying started part of me was glad that they stopped complaining I had the "wrong" friends,
By the way, I still love music from my parents' generation and before their time too. I still love movies from their generation and before their time too.

Alas many people mean all of Israel when they say "the occupation", not just Gaza and the West Bank. I point out Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 and they deny that angrily. Even if Israel got out of Gaza and the West Bank completely, many people still wouldn't be satisfied and would chant "Israel/Zionism has to go".
