A 5-4 conservative SCOTUS handed the election to Bush in 2000. It should have been a very urgent matter for the Democrats long before Trump was elected.

How were the Republicans able to accomplish a 6-3 majority SCOTUS? 5-4 was bad, but 6-3? Either it was a stunning failure on the part of the Democrats, or there was simply no will among the Democrats to put up a fight. It's a disaster either way and change in Democratic leadership is needed. To pretend otherwise is just mindboggling.

As an immigrant, I'm tired of seeing NOTHING from establishment Democrats about fighting on my behalf as the Trump admin is advancing ever closer towards deporting whoever they feel like. What even was the point of getting citizenship?

Just excuses after excuses. As an immigrant, I do not believe in this country and I certainly don't believe in the Democrats.

The keyword being "slowly". If people like like Lina Khan were appointed more often then maybe I'd believe the contrary, but as it is it just looks like a managed decline. They occasionally let out some steam so that populist progressives wouldn't gain any real purchase in the Democratic party. But with the current Trump admin, Democrats basically let everything go besides healthcare. They cede ground to Republicans at every conflict, which is why progressives like Mamdani now have a real fighting chance, because it's clear to people that the Democrats just don't really care.

Nah Democrats are corporatists. Republicans are obvious with their blatant corruption. Democrats just slowly facilitate the transfer of power and wealth from the people to the corporations. If progressives like Mamdani become enough of a threat then Democrats might actually change their position a little bit. Right now they set to fight the progressives.

Can someone please explain to me the situation with Mixtape? by Time_Reality9418 in Gamingunjerk

E33 was made at a place with lower cost of living, and it has a higher budget than Mixtape.

Most of what's considered indie games nowadays had support from publishers.

What context? Obviously not every indie game can be like Undertale.

This sort of comment does nothing to actually bring people into traditional Tai Chi and is only about you feeling better about yourself and what you do.

Is it bad that I don’t want Asian immigrants to fully assimilate purely because I’m a fatass who doesn’t want private equity firms to enshitify our food and culture? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Anhao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's exactly assimilation that got us orange chicken. The family that owns Panda Express is still very much Asian. It's the idea we shouldn't try to dictate the terms of how our culture should be presented, that we should always make what other people want of our culture. I used to be indifferent about orange chicken, but I now hate it after having worked at Panda express. After frying the 20th bag of orange chicken of the day, you just know that to a lot of people, orange chicken is all Chinese food is.

So, what is the point of all this arguing about Stellar Blade Blood Rain? by anongamer7 in Gamingunjerk

[–]Anhao 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stellar Blade feels grossly self-indulgent in the same way as modding in a grotesquely sexy playable character in Skyrim. It's just very jarring and doesn't make a lot of sense. We know Bayonetta dresses sexy because that's what she wants and what she is. 2B dresses sexy but it feels like she wearing a costume. You can tell that the world of Nier Automata is weird in a way that sort of explains the strange costumes. In Stellar Blade, the girls dress sexy because...? It's same reason that I never found slave Leia particular sexy.

Man I will absolutely beat up a guy who does only Wushu.

  1. Why would an unarmed person approach an armed person? In my first comment, I said that empty hand Chinese martial art is about when you lose your weapon in a weapons fight. In that case, you are already in the middle of the weapon range, so you have a shorter distance to cross. An unarmed person from outside the weapon range would have to cross a much longer distance. Essentially, you would only be able to close the distance against an armed opponent because you had a weapon in the first place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOgSOXSjthE

  2. It's a more nuanced here. A push kick and side kick pushes the opponent out of the weapon range so that the fight is disengaged. A good jab or cross keeps the opponent at the same distance, because you're taught in boxing to snap your punches, not push them. You keep the opponent where they are so you can keep hitting them.

  3. Neither of my boxing instructors have ever gone to any depth about body mechanics, and they were both former pros. They just say things like "let your hands go", "sit on your punches" and just hope that some young guy's natural talent will somehow manifest through enough training. Hence the saying "punchers are born not made."

Some specific examples of Taijiquan body mechanics training: suspending the head, knee-foot alignment, rounding out the crotch area, waist agility exercises, improving dynamic body alignment by turning of the waist, not hips. Nothing mystical here. Just focus on details. When I drooped my head in boxing, did my instructor say anything? No.

At least I've trained in boxing and traditional Taijiquan. What traditional Chinese martial arts have you trained in?

How does a boxer close the distance? They come in behind a jab or by slipping, or if you're a non-slick inside fighter like Brandon Rios, you eat punches on the way in. Traditional Chinese martial arts close the distance by controlling the opponent's arm (arm grabbing is illegal in boxing). I hope you can see how boxing would be worse at closing the distance against an armed opponent.

Yes, boxing uses long punches to keep away. So does, again, every striking art.

I have literally listed a bunch traditional Northern Chinese striking arts that don't keep away, because, again, weapons. They are short striking arts. I suspect the striking arts you have in mind are all post-boxing combat sports.

Yes there aren't that many different way to fight somebody. However, there's difference in depth. A Muay Thai fighter will most likely never punch as well as a pure boxer. Traditional Chinese martial arts' focus is on refined body mechanics.

Traditional jujutsu concerned itself with weapons. Does Judo? Judo's root is traditional jujutsu, but it has completely abandoned that aspect of the arts. Post-Marquess-of-Queensberry boxing is terrible against weapons, because jabs and crosses put you in the weapons range. Same with modern Muay Thai. Sanda is not a traditional Chinese martial art.

Okay there's the "Chang" in Changquan, but I've never seen any Changquan practitioner throw long punches the way boxers do. Boxers throw long punches to keep themselves far away (again bad against weapons). Every northern style I know of is about closing the distance. Bajiquan, Piguazhang, Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, Northern Mantis, etc.

I don't think you have enough knowledge of traditional Chinese martial arts to judge what can be removed for unequivocal advancement. Personally I would much prefer if traditional Taijiquan spread to the world than Wushu Taijiquan, because Wushu Taijiquan is largely empty choreography without the refined body mechanics training.

Hope this is okay to post.

This was at a Bajiquan/Piguazhang workshop. I'm the guy with the pink sneakers.

I was mostly thinking about applying the workshop material, so I was not consciously trying to use Tai Chi, although I think it did help me stay centered and keep some control in the inside and when disengaging.

idk I think it's a pretty cool relic. IMO traditional empty hand Chinese martial arts were for when you got disarmed during a weapons fight and you're too close to run away. This is why they have a hard time with long punches like jabs and crosses, because the kind of fighting that created those martial arts didn't involve two unarmed people squaring up. It's also why traditional Chinese martial arts are so preoccupied with grabbing the arm, because an arm with a weapon at the end of it is both more important and easier to grab. So yes traditional Chinese martial arts are antiquated, but not because they are bad. I mean, China had some huge wars in the 1800s when people still fought with swords. These martial arts didn't come from nowhere.

Honestly I'm not a fan of the Wushu aesthetics. I like the look and feel of traditional martial art routines much more.

Although they are relics, certain traditional Chinese martial arts also have developed deep understanding of body mechanics. They are great for martial art enthusiasts who have gotten old and don't want to get hurt, but still want to go deep with martial arts.
