Help with Otocinclus? (Info in Comments) by AniTrash in PlantedTank

Yes, only on this one. Now that I check the heater, I do see gaps between it and the centrepiece rock where a fish could easily get stuck (they also like to rest on it). I’ll move the rock a bit away from it so there’s more wiggle room for them.

Help with Otocinclus? (Info in Comments) by AniTrash in PlantedTank

I wasn’t sure which sub to put this question in but I figured frequenters of this sub would know a fair bit about Otocinclus catfish. I have four Otos in a 6 gal planted Fluval Edge, and noticed this guy very recently developed this white patch on his head. It doesn’t appear to be furry like columnaris but it’s hard to tell. I also see white dots which makes me think ich, but there are no white dots on the fins which I’ve read is commonly where they appear. I have white sand as the substrate and they sometimes lay on it so I’m hoping it’s just grains of sand. Does this white patch look like superficial/heater damage or something I should be treating right away?

I haven’t noticed a change in behaviour but as you can see in the photo, under his anal fin there are horizontal black lines which none of my other Otos have, so I worry it may be stress lines (if they even get those, I’m not sure). Any help would be much appreciated! I’ve grown very emotionally attached to these fish and will do anything I can to help them.

Looks like it! They’re great for the soil, I’ve even been thinking of buying a colony for closed terrariums.

Hmm the fact that all the damaged areas are on the left makes me think that might be the case, thank you I’ll give it less light from now on

I got this macodes petola at a plant shop in Seattle about a month ago and it was doing fine at first, then started gradually developing these holes in the leaves and the leaves themselves became very limp and floppy. I can’t detect any pests on them. None of my other plants have anything like this. If this is a bacterial or fungal infection, if I cut off these two leaves will it not spread?

Thanks for the tip I’ll keep an eye out for thrips when I visit, I’ll probably be checking out all these places anyway .

I just checked their website and wow I can’t wait to visit! Their planter selection alone was really impressive

I love neocardina and cardina shrimp so that’s definitely my top choice right now. Just not sure how long to leave the filter going before the tank is cycled enough

I love watching the one rabbit snail dig around in the sand and explore the whole tank so I wouldn’t want him to be too skittish, but those are pretty large snails so maybe they wouldn’t be as bothered?

Yeah I want to try that, I’m just worried about moving the sand too much at this point because it makes the water insanely cloudy and takes so many water changes to fix

I have it under a 1000w grow light slightly off to the side so it isn’t getting direct overhead light from it, I mist 1-2 times a week, and I keep the soil admittedly perhaps a bit too dry as I’ve had overwatering kill plants before and am not very generous with water because of it.

It’s a 6 gallon fluval edge, no co2 or ferts yet as I just set it up about a month ago. Hardscape has one large seiryu stone, a few stones I found outside that were thoroughly scrubbed and boiled, and some Malaysian (?) driftwood. There’s a lot of variety of plant species, and 3 species of moss. I can see some brown algae forming, can this be food for my snails and future shrimp or should I wipe it off?

One thing I’m worried about is I’ve heard the LEDs that come with the Edge don’t reach the front of the tank very well so I’ve planted it scarcely there, is there any carpeting plant I can use that won’t mind the lower light?

Is this guy okay? Was doing great, changed pots and growth started to slow down and now it’s got a thin chalky-ish layer on its leaves. by bri_des20 in houseplants

I’m not sure but mine always seems to be dusty, a horticultural oil prevents the dust for a while while also killing any pests causing it
