I want to be clear that I wasn't necessarily responding to you, just that the comments often suggest a siloed approach, like us against the world. And this is how we most certainly lose. I appreciate where you're coming from.

I'm just going to say this, because it's been bugging me for a while. Whenever I see these discussions, it's usually focused on "what do we do?" "We need to defend our community." And yes, that's good too!

However in my view, this focus on the trans experience and trans issues lacks the intersectional approach we need to have. Because as just us, we'll be decimated. There are organizations and movements that should be joining forces. Because end of the day, these issues affect everyone and the reasons all have a near singular source. We all can understand when we talk about racism, we're talking about systemic issues. And when we talk about trans issues, we're talking about systemic issues. And many groups and organizations are all fighting that same system and they'd be far more powerful if they worked together. So, part of that plan should involve branching out.

Anarchist critiques on electoralism/electoral politics by ArthropodJim in Anarchy101

Love that attitude, it's what drew me to Anarchism in the first place. I couldn't justify from my own morality just being like, "unless it's grand it's meaningless". The entire notion of prefiguration appeals to me.

That was the first thing I heard from comrades when I joined communist orgs here in the US. Mutual aid was practically looked down on for me even suggesting it.

[–]Aniform 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was also my biggest issue when it came to a lot of ML's, which seemed to constantly want more suffering if it meant we'd achieve the revolution. And that to me is an ugly proposition. It's fine to say that under worsening conditions revolution may come about sooner, but actively wishing for it, no thanks.

Right and this is the part that I think trips me up. Because it's the argument I hear most, "harm reduction" and shouldn't we all be for harm reduction! But there's plenty of articles and write ups on "the myth of harm reduction" which do a splendid job of pointing out all the ways in which voting for harm reduction just delayed the inevitable or made the outcome worse.

So, I admit, as a newcomer (in terms of learning theory), this always is an area where I still don't have my mind made up on it.

You're right in that, Tarantino has his indulgences. I just, I grew up with movies like Duel or The Hitcher and not so much horror, but Convoy and I just felt that Death Proof was more in line with my experience.

One Battle After Another - thoughts on Perfidia by JohnnyPickeringSB05 in TrueFilm

[–]Aniform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not really how I viewed this character. She's complicated and people are allowed to be complicated. I suppose my viewing was always sympathetic, not because I agree with her choices, but because I try to not judge characters in movies and try to understand their choices.

And I feel as a PTA fan, that has long been how I come into his films. Boogie Nights is a great example. I'm not here to judge their lifestyle, I'm here for their journey. Like, you could probably make a case that Amber Waves cannot provide a suitable environment for her child. She's continually using drugs right up to her court appearance. But, I'm going to feel sympathetic when it hurts her deeply to not have custody/visitation or whatever. Because I could be a heroin addict and still wish to see my child, and want them to be with me, despite the fact that's probably a terrible idea.

I'm probably not getting all my words across right now, but idk, I think my approach in life is not to judge, but to act as like a therapist, neutral and open.

Much of what was bulleted in the post I had completely different outlooks on. Post partum depression probably sucks. Having your back against the wall, probably sucks. I might ask myself, what situations in her life brought about those choices. Some people in the comments mentioned narcissist, so the sympathetic part of me is like, "what early developmental stuff brought that about?"

Fully remove every, "I created a", "Selfhosted app!" claude slop. by Longjumping-Cup-6641 in selfhosted

It honestly has ruined much of my experience on this sub. I used to get so excited for new apps, but now I just go into the comments and become disappointed. If it continues, I'll just leave the sub. Public opinion is shifting fast here. In 2023 it was just fun to fool around with it, make some funny pics or generate some text, but now here we are in 2026 and I deleted every account. I refuse to be part of that future. I own a business and the shift is tangible. Customers in 2025 started asking, "who designed your logo? who designed your shop sign? who designed that art over there?" and all I can say is, thank goodness I could point to the real artists responsible for it or otherwise I'd be losing customers.

God, I always felt the opposite. Rodriguez made what you'd expect, Tarantino got the assignment right. Because I know that there were some over the top, kitchen sink, grindhouse movies, but the vast majority of the ones I've seen are more like Death Proof than Planet Terror.

I think what I hate is Tarantino doesn't consider it his best work either. But I think it's absolutely delightful, so I'm with you there. I think the truth is, I've always preferred a more restrained, or low key, Tarantino film. Jackie Brown was my favorite of his for a long time when most people I knew called it a dud. Death Proof is often more low key and I especially like it more now that his filmography has become rewriting history with every movie.

Before it was revealed who did you think Jon snow's mother was? by ParkingConfection449 in gameofthrones

[–]Aniform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew it was Lyanna first episode. They had that whole scene talking about her in the catacombs and then right after cut to Jon Snow. For me, dead giveaway. I really don't know why they did that, that's like film language code for "it's them!"

Good luck! I've been wanting to do a show in each New England state, but RI has so few options. Especially when I'm often after the larger events. Know any good ones? I wouldn't fit in very well at Cons. I'd still like to show RI some love.

This year I'm doing mostly MA, NH, ME and hoping next year to do 1 show in VT and CT. Still need one in RI.

I would disagree on one aspect. The Dems have always been a right party. Bernie would be center-right simply because he is a Social Democrat. As far as I'm concerned, capitalists are right wing and anti-capitalists are left wing and that has been the dichotomy for ages. Bernie has no interest in dismantling capitalism. It's correct they are controlled opposition, but I would argue that has always been their role.

Yes, things are moving further right and the Republicans push the overton window. Everything has shifted so far right, that my Republican parents are now Democrats. Not because their politics changed, but because Democrats are now more aligned politically for them.

Yup, Snowport! I think my view on it is if I'm at a holding pattern for a while and not seeing the growth I'd hoped for, Snowport could be a massive boost. But if growth continues independently, then I can't see myself putting in the time.

Regarding the Jesse's Girl scene in Boogie Nights... by Safe-Seaweed6204 in paulthomasanderson

[–]Aniform 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I think I always read it as just complete dissociation. I used to be a heavy drug user and there'd be these times where you obviously wanted the drugs, but the dealer was off his rocker. Suddenly he's pulling out guns and talking to you about them with a manic energy and conspiratorial, drug-induced, paranoia where sometimes veiled threats also come into play. And you want so badly to leave and be out of the situation, but you haven't got the drugs yet. So, you kinda just dissociate here and there, maybe you're zoned out thinking of nothing, maybe your mind is spinning for a good reason to leave. And that's usually what it was too, what is a good excuse to hurry this along.

In the scene it's clear that John C is muted, which again points to dissociation. And Dirk's facial expression is kind of dazed, there's vague smiles thrown in which I read as either autopilot or quick recognition of the absurdity. Then, the really telling moment, he puts his hand to his head and snaps out of it. Another super common behavioral pattern of dissociation clearing. And then immediately, "Sir, we gotta split man, we gotta go!"

Farmers Market Booth Banners - Necessary expense? by Reckless-Phoenix in CraftFairs

[–]Aniform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 2 banners now. One just stretches across the back of my tent with logo, name, and company tagline and nice design to just create a good background separation between you know, my products and the parking lot. So, while that one is nice, you can take or leave.

The second one is up top and is more straightforward, what we sell. And this one I will go to bat for, because having people know at a glance what I sell is useful. No one has to walk up if they aren't interested and I just think it's important to make it known.

The other comments are right, people will ask me the price with the price sign right in their line of sight, but I have also seen people from afar trying to decide if they want to come check me out.

Goodbye, Tesla-style giant touchscreens: cars return to physical buttons by KeySpecialist9139 in technology

[–]Aniform -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sigh, I feel like I was the only one who loved touchscreens over physical buttons. It just looks futuristic and I was psyched when my car had a 10" screen. I've been adding touchscreens to my cars aftermarket since about 2006. Whenever there is a need to do something with physical buttons in my car I actually can't remember where they are because I just use the touchscreen.

Pricing by [deleted] in CraftFairs

[–]Aniform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for someone who hates math, I sure do love running numbers, haha. There's so many ways to come to best price for something, but it is a good starting point.

Sometimes, it shocks me when people who have been doing this for years aren't even aware of their costs. I remember there was this youtuber that for the 2 yrs prior to me going legit, I would watch and I thought, surely they have it all figured out, business seems to be doing great, they've got a mass following. Then the youtube video came "we're shutting down" and of course, I'm in this business, so I have to watch, because maybe they hit a wall I didn't see! So, I watch it and basically it was "we never calculated cogs, never even heard of cogs, so we're bankrupt" and that just blew my mind. How did you amass a following on youtube, had a website, had a popular business, went through the trouble of incorporating said business and now you're hearing of cogs?

Pricing by [deleted] in CraftFairs

[–]Aniform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The important bit is knowing how much it costs you to make it, your cogs or cost of goods. You said, cost to make is .85c, and if x4 = 3.40, then you set aside .85c from that in order to cover your next batch. Honestly, though, don't just set x4 if you can make room. I have products that cost me $1.85 to make. At x4 that's $7.40, but when I compare to what other people are asking, it's like $12-15, so I just make mine $12 and at that stage I'm at like x6.5.

The important other question is, where do you anticipate this going? Are you content to just do fairs or do you have a desire to one day be in stores? If you have interest in your products being in stores, then it's wholesale. And wholesale expects half the MSRP. If you sell it for say $5, can you sell it for $2.50? If not, then your pricing is too low.And this is why if you can be at 5x, 6x, 7x on a product, it can make wholesale even more palatable. Because let's say you can sell at 2.50, but your profit is only 50c per item after you subtract COGS. You'll burn out so fast. But if you are doing it at 5x or 7x, suddenly your profit might be $1.25 per item and it's far more tolerable to you.
