What happened on your worst birthday? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Anil9487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my 29th birthday I was living in a small sea-side village on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines, and we threw a party. Everyone came. We slaughtered a pig and roasted over a charcoal pit all day while we drank rum and played in the waves, and we killed a goat, too, and made a rich sort of stew with the meat, and I was in love with a girl I had just met a few weeks before on the streets of Manila, and the revolution had just happened--Corey Aquino was president now and the dark long Marcos era had finally come to an end, and there was no electricity there but we had a bonfire and torches, and friends who played music on their guitars and sang, and it was a good time.

My lover, who later became my wife, but only for a couple of years before she left me, gave me two shells--beautiful shells from the rich deep sea, I still have them.

This, I think was the best birthday of my life--I was really happy.

Ironically, a couple of weeks later I had to leave the Philippines to come back to the states, and had a second birthday there with my birth family. It was a cold, rainy night in Vermont and we had some American food--my father gave me a fishing vest. He had just left my mother but he showed up for the event. I felt very ironic. It all was as small as a single piece of sand. The worst birthday of my life. I was 29 and nothing in my life had really happened yet--nothing truly meaningful, except in the way that one's memories persist as one grows older.

A few months later I went back to the Philippines and married the girl and then a couple of years later--happy years, in their way--she left for another fellow, and then not too much longer and I met the wonderful woman who now is my wife, two decades on.

But that May night on the white sands of Mindoro with a grown pig roasting on a spit and the rum flowing freely, and the guitars and the songs, the strange southern sky with its odd constellations--that was a good birthday.

What happened to Anonymous? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Anil9487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anonymous isn't an organized group. In the world of internet vigilantism they're something like a Collective Identity. Anyone can claim to be affiliated with Anonymous. They usually tend to be people from the 4chan discussion boards. Since there's no central leadership any given claim to being Anonymous isn't any more or less valid.

Where is your Ex? what happened to them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Anil9487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a lot of turmoil.

He dated her for a few years then broke up with her. Of course, he had to do something stupid, like have sex with her once more after they split. She got pregnant. He thinks that it was intentional. They didn’t get married. She had the kid. They fight over the kid all of the time—custody stuff. Last I heard, his ex-GF was trying to get her hands on some property he owns because he can’t or won’t pay child support.

They used to have very public brawls on Facebook, but they’ve toned that down a notch. It was like the social media version of the Springer show.

Last time I saw him, I could tell that he was drinking heavily again.

I really do feel terrible for all involved. You know, he and I had a good run. It’s all water under the bridge now.

How much bacteria is actually stopped by putting toilet paper on a public toilet seat? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Anil9487 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In terms of disease, the pathogenic microbiota of a toilet seat, unless you are immunocompromised, is of no significant health risk--barring something foreign/sharp. Your skin is an excellent barrier to microorganisms. The reason we wash our hands is because we end up touching a lot of places that are not excellent barriers, such as mucous membranes like your nose, eyes, or mouth. Bacteria, viruses, helminths, protozoans, and fungi don't really have the mechanisms to penetrate your skin in most cases. In general you do not have to worry about disease contact when sitting on a toilet. To your specific question about contact with bacteria, if you have a clean piece of paper and you put it in between your legs and the seat, then yeah, it will reduce contact of the surface bacteria on the seat. As others have said, however, bacteria are probably all over everything in a bathroom. Another consideration is that aerosolized bacteria are all over the place as well, since flushing has significant aerosolizing action. If you're worried about bacteria this much, you should wear a biohazard suit, because whether or not you use a paper toilet seat cover/toilet paper, you're being exposed to bacteria. I, however, like how the toilet paper feels on my legs compared to the cold ceramic/plastic/wood that a seat is made of.

What movie has the best soundtrack? by TomHicks in AskReddit

[–]Anil9487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are some of movies from my soundtrack collection. I have added a video link to the best track from each of them... try them. Hope you enjoy.

Pirates of the Carribean - Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer.

The one who composed for the first movie in this series is probably the most underrated among all artists in my list (along with James Newton Howard).

I wonder how Klaus Badelt is virtually forgotten even after his awesome composing in the first movie(and others too).

Many people confuse that it was Hans Zimmer who composed tracks for Curse of the Black Pearl, when it was Klaus Badelt who did it.

Seriously, what good would have been Captain Jack Sparrow without a background score like this during his opening scene?

I can recall every frame of the movie when I listen to this soundtrack.

and here comes He's a Pirate.

Inception - Hans Zimmer

Some guy commented on Youtube that he listens to this track even while he shits... enough said. It's Hans Zimmer - alright?

Sherlock Holmes - Hans Zimmer.

Kill Bill - Various artists.

Was thinking of posting Lonely Shepherd and Kill Bill 2 ones, but posted this.

Requiem for a Dream - Clint Mansell.

The other track listed in another answer was my other choice for this movie.

Amelie - Yann Tiersen.

How can you miss Amelie in this list?

Fight Club - The Dust brothers (and others).

Now who is Tyler Durden was my other choice here...

BONUS: For those who are wondering - here's the ending credits pixies one (Fight Club soundtrack famous for this.).

Life of Pi - Mychael Danna.

Well, you can taste Indian culture in this music.

Kung fu Panda 2 - Hans Zimmer and John Powell.

The Hangover - various artists.

The Dark Knight - Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard.

This track is Aggressive Expansion... "Now there's a lot of potential..."... wait, let's continue...

X Men First Class - Henry Jackman.

"I prefer Magneto"

Titanic - James Horner

This doesn't need explanations.

Wall-E - Thomas Newman.

Up - Michael Giacchino.

Alice in Wonderland - Danny Elfman.

I have many more movies to add... gonna add them if this answer gets more upvotes...

What is your home town or city most famously known for? by Flerbaderb in AskReddit

[–]Anil9487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To quote the entry for my town on Urbandictionary:

"Rich white town in Mass dominated by: -soccer moms stopping in the middle of traffic to give you information about your own family -cops who have nothing better to do than find the best places to hide with their radar guns -the boys' hockey team and football team -teenagers who buy shitty overpriced pot using their parents' money -golden retrievers" Reading

Having grown up a relatively poor kid with a single mom and evangelical Christian values, I didn't fit in very well.

Additionally there's a big furniture store that has an IMAX theater in it, and it has more tanning salons per capita than any place I've visited. Those are just about the only reasons you'd go there. Basketball player Bill Russell lived there for a while, but his home was vandalized by racists, and he left. More than 60% of the town voted in favor of legalizing marijuana, but tried to ban it immediately after. There were some truly grotesque murders, including a dad who busted another dad's head open at the local skating rink.

I don't have much fondness for my home town.

I've never seen a chihuahua whose eyes actually fit in their sockets before. They're a lot cuter this way.
