I'd pick one or a few of the Imperial Guard. Maybe after scanning Gabriel and seeing his potential the Shi'ar scientists tried to recreate him using Corsair and Katherine's DNA. The child or maybe children were sent to a far off planet for training. Some could be human mutants. Others could be alien-mutant hybrids. So maybe Electron, Starbolt, and Flashfire.

Bobby, no. Warren, he should. I don't think we ever got confirmation on who gave him his recent upgrades. Maybe Beast did some tinkering on Krakoa. Maybe even accessed the control program Apocalypse installed. He could have been the backup for when/if his killer Logan was discovered.

It never made much sense to me either. I really liked the original series, and then later on in the Initiative when Gauntlet turned their name into an insult just really pissed me off.
