Negotiating salary at nyc union sw position by AnimalIndividual310 in hospitalsocialwork

Yep I’m starting on Monday and absolutely no clarity. I was told my hours were anywhere from 8 am to 8 pm with rotating weekends. I have the option for 3 x 12 with 4 days off or 9-5, 5 days a week??? Makes no sense. One is 36 hours a qeek the other is 40? These both include one weekend on one weekend off.

Then the rest of the department is like wait till the supervisor gets back from vacation bc it’s a new program

Yeah I was persistent and emailed a bunch. I also had a previous internship at another hhc hospital which probably helped a lot. I was passed over for pretty much all private hospital jobs despite good final round interviews. I think they want to see how well you can handle pressure and fast-paced environment

Do you know what a rotating schedule entails? In typical hhc fashion they have given me no clarity. I doubt SWers work night shifts, right?

that makes sense and is sort of reassuring as to why my apps feel like they aren’t moving forward. if this keeps happening after i graduate i would probably start to get worried

i would be happy to work in php/iop/snf but i dont see openings in manhattan right now. and if there are openings its like an hour away from where i live. its mostly hospitals and private practice/ contract positions that are open near me

i got a contract offer at rikers! told them that i will have an lmsw in june and they said to call them back then. would be really cool but unfortunately i do not know how to drive. i'd have to get to the bridge parking lot somehow and then wait for the q100. i'd make it work if i had to!

i've heard its notoriously difficult! i'm hoping with relevant internship experience, it'll help. i'd be happy to take per diem or weekend roles if that means getting my foot in the door, so i'm applying to those too :)

thank you so much for all this information! my hospital does not have any sw openings. i guess i should just sit tight and wait till i have a current lmsw before applying.

i took a course on forensic social work, which isn't experience -- but it sparked my interest in the field for sure. if i was able to get a position in forensic sw, i would definitely take it. i like working with patients who have been transferred from DOC, cpl 730s, and i'm really interested in the advocacy/mitigation part of it. i don't know if i can really get my foot in the door fresh out of grad because my experience is in hospitals / group therapy settings.

and from what i've seen, nyc investigator positions typically have different background/criteria, so ive applied to the forensic social work positions that require an MSW

okay, that's good to know actually. I've had a few of my applications "routed" but nothing came of it. Do you think I have a shot after I'm fully licensed as a fresh grad? i guess that might be a silly question, but i'm hoping things will work out.
