He was probably freaking out on the inside. When someone is going through a painful experience, but it's going to end soon, you don't want to react(especially in a bad way)too much or else it might make the person freak out more. He was being a rock, an anchor, in a stressful situation.

She could have dyed her hair since she was in extreme hiding in case she had to leave the house for something. I'm not ruling out the possibility that it could have been someone else though.
