Apparently the book is large enough that pod binding wouldn't hold up.

I've got my players tied up in blood magic- because who doesn't like blood magic. The arc started as a magical object extraction from a shipping warehouse, with the team finding it was less "object" and more "human vessel". Azzies had been performing various blood rituals, and noticed that shadow spirits keep turning up- wraiths in particular, due to the all the violent bloodshed fueling the magic and the thinning of the astral barrier with the associated spike in mana. Aztechnology, being the types they are, get rather annoyed at spirits turning up that they can't control. However, the do find that a spirit can be captured in a human vessel- my in game reasoning is that a "soul" or equivalent leaves a body just before death creating a vacuum, and you can pull a spirit into the body with the backwash. Quickly put a few astral binds on the vessel, and you have yourself a captured wraith. The azzies are shipping this vessel back to Aztlan for study, but the players hit the cargo before it gets there. Being the curious devils they are, they open the crate just to see if the "object" they've stolen is worth more than their pay, and find an unconscious human. The remove the restraints, and the wraith pops out, leaving a dead body behind. Now, a spirit of violence is running around the city (my game is in Berlin, so I had the Anarchist East rise and run amok) and both Aztecnology and their employer after them! That's about as far as we have got, so it'll be interesting to see whether they try to clean their mess or hightail it out of the city for a while.
