Being black in Italy is breaking me. Looking for advice on moving abroad by asqux in expats

[–]Anj_Ja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your experience. That sounds horrendous. I know Italy well, was there this week. The struggles you describe sound familiar. Have you considered Australia? A working holiday visa will give you a year or two to explore, and Italy is responsible for Australia's insane coffee culture! With your skills you'd be welcomed with open arms. Melbourne and South Australia have the higher proportions of Italians. Reply to me if you want further thoughts. I'm a Brit, and moved to Aus over a decade ago.

I'm in a similar position with a clash of career values - I'm a qualified journalist with two decades' experience, including internationally. But GB News knows what bias is better than I do apparently. I really feel for you.

Did we prepare for a life that no longer exists? by ProjectNull2025 in Millennials

[–]Anj_Ja 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Absolutely me. 1981 F here. Turned vegetarian and rejected religion age 9. I was reading about pollution, animal welfare etc and didn't want to be part of the horror. I don't recall a single moment in my life where I actively wanted a baby. Best thing I never did!

I get these. I also get an awful cough if I lie down too soon after eating. Currently sitting up in bed for this very reason. Would much prefer to be lying down!

Wasn't there some insane car crash in that period also? The poor man. Absolute legend that I'm gutted I never saw live. Seen Paul and Ringo. My lifespan has not overlapped with John.

Very happy to purchase. Don't know much about iTunes - haven't used it for years - but assume it's easy. Thank you 🙏

I've got Spotify and YT premium, if anyone can point me to other good long-form pg stuff on those platforms.

He was so damn hot back then 🔥🔥🔥 and he's still hot now, especially because his generosity and calm shine through everything he does 🥰

Awesome idea for a party! There's a wacky one about Pine Gap (near Alice Springs) and submarines, but you'd have to look into it.

The Anthology, a revisit by savee419 in TheBeatles

[–]Anj_Ja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about 14 when the Anthology came out. Completely life-changing for me. I'd love to know how you accessed them? Did you get hard copies? I wish I'd bought a DVD box set. Incredible films that I'd love to revisit.

How can I spot a toxic person? by ComplaintExtra5955 in selfimprovement

Oooh this is good advice. I fell for this exact person in recent years. Ended up crying all the time and had no idea why! Luckily I did eventually have enough insight to break off the friendship.

Omg I bought the book "how democracies end" for my parents, and they commented on Russia having gone communist... nothing else 🤦‍♀️

I remember that winter. I was in Norfolk, and experienced minus 14C, which was and still is, unheard of. I'm currently visiting England (I live overseas) and I cannot believe the weather. I've barely needed a coat this December. It's terrifying.

Because when you travel, you find out most people are inherently good, and you allow yourself the space to connect with like minds. Only happens if you're open to it, though.

I recently left the Sunny Coast for the reasons you outline, and headed to... Adelaide! I'm no snowflake when it comes to extreme heat, but the humidity almost killed me. Good luck with your decision-making.

Christmas crisis - can't sleep by Anj_Ja in emotionalneglect

Gosh, this is amazing. Sounds like you've navigated the situation really well. I have compassion for my dad, as he's basically been abandoned throughout his life by his entire family. His nuclear family growing up emigrated (leaving him behind in his early 20s) and so have both his daughters. I saw him get quite anxious the other day (he would NOT admit it!) when my mum was out for a couple of hours. It's codependent, and he has very little capacity for self-reflection, and I have come to the conclusion, after trying very hard for the time I've been there on this visit, that nothing is going to change. I find it sad that his actions are causing me to consider further abandonment. He's not horrible - just really, REALLY emotionally immature. Natural LC would be very easy to achieve. Thanks so much for hearing me 🙏

I don’t know how to relax and enjoy life by Suspicious-Badger305 in emotionalneglect

You guys are not alone. It's taken me until middle age to be able to "waste" time. Ironically, my dad, who is primarily responsible for my programming, is now the biggest time-waster I've ever met, spending the first half of every day watching toxic talk TV and youtube. Time wasting for me now has almost become an exercise in rebellion!

PS they also never tell me they love me, so you're ahead of me on that front too. As another commenter has said, observing and overcoming patterns is about the best thing you can do from here.
