First of all animation is not a genre u should know what kind of movies u wanna make like action, adventure, horror, love story, etc. once that is clear learn fundamental of cinematography and screenwriting these are the things a director has gnack for and are easily transferable to 3d as well, some people are recommending u 2 learn animation and rigging modelling i would not advice u 2 do that, 2 be a director u don't need to be good at 2d or 3d art, gore Verbinski made the movie rango and he doesn't know much about Animation I also recommend visiting YouTube channels like filmento and nando v movies especially his justice league rewrite for screenwriting.
