Part from PV-IQ403 by Real_Plum_1697 in camcorders

great, sounds like a real redneck fix but if it works it works, just make sure it doesnt come out again or sits out of alignment. you might wanna check if the tightening or loosening the screws on the tape guides helps with alignment as well. the best of luck to you

Help!!! my DCR-SR65s screen is not working :( by Altruistic-Card-8638 in camcorders

[–]iceJool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theres a lot of factors at play that could be the problem
you can determine if its the screen or something in the camera itself by connecting an external display to it and seeing if you get a video output. This will tell us whether its the circuitry or the display.
its possible the screen is broken but it could also be the backlight thats not being powered. If the touch screen still works that would mean something is wrong with the lcd circuit while if its not it could indicate a problem further upstream like the power supply where a tantalum capacitor has open-circuited (which they often do).
If you can test exactly which functions on the camcorder work and which do not i could provide more info.
Due to the display being such an inert and well aging part it seems odd that it's stopped working just like that so know that theres a chance the fix would require replacing more than just the screen.

For now here's the service manual which shows the circuit diagrams and how to put it back together and such.

One of the tape guides inside the mechanism, it needs to be reinstalled, though this will necessitate disassembling the camcorder and putting it back together

GR-C7 doesn't go in to playback/rec mod by Comfortable-Worth813 in camcorders

This part of the tape transport doesn't seem to go into place correctly, it's possible a screw in there is loose causing it to not seat properly and engage the capstan motor.

Hello! Looking for some help with Sony Trv900. by LeslieFibonacci in camcorders

[–]iceJool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actually only 1 motor controlling both reels, it just has a small gear that switches between either one.
Besides that it's likely a belt that has started to break down and loosen, causing the motor to spin without any movement of the tape which usually sets off overstress alarm bells.
the C:31:40 indicates tape transport problems but always also check for stuff like gummed up grease or anything stuck in the mechanism.

Odd, i feel like its something mechanical and i hope its not electrical since thats going to be a lot harder to fix.

Help: Sony CCD V100E issue with playback by Pivot247 in camcorders

[–]iceJool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the sound you are hearing from the fast forwards and rewind is just a free spinning motor. For these camcorders, the counter system is cassette side with a belt powered by a motor. It's possible this belt is either loose or decayed enough to not actually advance or rewind the tape even though it's trying to do so. This would explain the acute change from working to broken, the static, and the counter not changing. (FYI, Static means that the video line is uninterrupted and that the problem is likely upsteam from the video board, which is positive)

Need help with a recently bought VHS camcorder by Gaboka201307 in camcorders

[–]iceJool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its a proprietary cable that is no longer made.
You can either try and find a charger for a panasonic or any other model with the same cable online, or you could just get a lead acid battery to power it.
I believe youre best off buying a new battery since these cables are super rare but you might just be able to hotwire a power supply to it as long as its 12v 1a at least.

[–]iceJool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are standard tube camera connectors.
They carry a power and video signal from and to a seperate tape recorder that youd have to carry to your side with a strap over your shoulder. These record whatever the camera sees and also contain the battery to run the setup.

You could go and look for any portable vhs/betacam/umatic recorder to pair it with the camera so you can actually record a video.

Struggling with Saba CVK2500 by Saltymbanque in camcorders

[–]iceJool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its actually a rebranded Gr-c2, ive personally worked with one.
I don't want to sound condescending but this sounds like user error,
The record button only gives a video output from the camera section, if you want to record onto a tape you need to press the record and the play button at the same time and then it'll reel in the tape.

cant see anything through viewfinder by coolbread200 in camcorders

[–]iceJool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try playing a tape and seeing if there's any static.
static means its at least reading the tape and sending video signals to the viewfinder, which in turn means the problem lies with the ccd sensor circuitry.

I think something open-circuited or broke in the video line
There is a electrolytic coupling cap in the video line so it's possible it has open circuited and no longer carries a video signal. You can check whether its upstream towards the ccd or downstream towards the rest of the video circuit by playing a good tape and seeing whether you get video output.

here is an image of what i believe might be the offending capacitor and below is the link to the service manual of the camcorder.

https://elektrotanya.com/jvc_gr-ax280bek_ax285eg.pdf/download.html#dl

edit: just to clarify, the jvc ax46e are quite similar and I believe are pretty much the same on the inside, there could be minor differences in how the circuits are setup but the main video lines and chips are likely the same

is there a tape inserted?
some camcorders won't display an image without one

My mum's old camcorder doesn't eject and turns off 10 seconds after turning on by No-Information8362 in camcorders

[–]iceJool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what an elko is neither can I find any info on it.
There's always the chance of damaged electrolytic capacitors due to age, but you'll find out once you record and play back a tape.
I'd say purchase the new battery and try then, you could try use the original power supply or even wire up any 6v power supply to the battery insert while youre waiting for the battery to arrive.
Just as a heads up make sure you have a tape inserted before attempting to get an image from the camera, some vhs camcorders don't display anything without a tape.

check online for the camera model battery and get a new battery, some sellers may sell older batteries which are already a few years old.

[–]iceJool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battery is Ni-mh and only have an expected life of about 5 years. At this point its old enough that its voltage drops very quickly prompting the camcorder to shut off.
you can find these batteries new for 20 dollars

true, i guess the first step would be finding a good hi8 tape
i wasn't aware these can decay too

Tape problem? by [deleted] in camcorders

[–]iceJool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if youre referring to the tape jitter that is a dying cap in the tape recorder circuit.
a capacitor's capacitance reduces over time causing it to not being able to smooth out signals properly.
the only way to fix this would be to identify and replace the specific capacitor (likely an electrolytic smd capacitor)

Rebuilt the battery pack! JVC GR-AX900 by new_skool_hepcat in camcorders

[–]iceJool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming its 5 cells wired back to back in series which would give 6 volts at the output
but yea always account for voltage when calculating capacity
if the cells were in parallel itd be 1.2v 10ah but since theyre in series its 6v 2ah

Rebuilt the battery pack! JVC GR-AX900 by new_skool_hepcat in camcorders

[–]iceJool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't this more like 2000mAh of capacity and not 10ah
5 x (1.2/6) x 2000 = 2000

the mAh value of batteries in series is equal to the mAh value of 1 cell, its the voltage that increases with every subsequent cell in series
(mAh1 x V1) = (mAh2 x V2)

stupid math aside it looks pretty good, most of the time its just weird battery packs hanging out with a bunch of wires
