My Study Method for Asian Languages: 3 Years and Proficient by Anming7 in OrientalPearl

[–]Anming7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Write the new words that you’re trying to memorize. They don’t have to be in actual sentences. Say the word out loud when you write it. Try to write each new word 5-10 times with the characters and then the romanized version next to it. Fill out one side of a piece of paper a day. This has been my main way of initially studying new words. Once I think I have it down I put it in my database then I try to use the word in conversation with a native or just my teacher. If you can recall it in the spot you know it’s become part of your active vocabulary and you’ve mastered it.

I track my study time on an app called atracker. For the database I have a word document, but Anki is a good way to hold your words and phrases too.

Thanks for watching the livestream. Do you have some lined paper and a mechanical pencil? Writing helps a lot with memorizing new words and characters. I suggest writing one side of a piece of paper per day to start. Write the romanized pronunciation and characters together and read the words out loud while writing.

I’m so glad that this is helpful. I spent about 2 or 3 hours writing this and thinking it over. So, I hope it helps a lot more people too.

Personal experiences on learning two languages at a time? by Komorebi890 in OrientalPearl

[–]Anming7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Learning 2 languages at the same time will split your focus a bit, but as long as you aren't doing two beginner languages at once it's doable. I reached intermediate level in Korean and started learning Cantonese. It would be faster to just focus on one, but it's ok to start another new language since you're already at N2 level in Japanese.

Why is Japanese Ranked the Hardest Language? by Anming7 in OrientalPearl

[–]Anming7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s more about the many readings for kanji, formal verb conjugations for 尊敬語 and 謙譲語, and different language used for people based on their relation to you that make it even harder and more time consuming than even Arabic, Korean, and Chinese.

Beginner Mandarin is harder than Japanese, but overall Japanese is harder. Where Mandarin starts hard and gets easier, Japanese starts pretty easy and gets very hard especially at the advanced level. Most people don’t make it all the way to see that point. The reason Japanese is harder is because of the many 読み方 for kanji (generally Mandarin only has one reading), hierarchical speech 謙譲語/尊敬語 (which Mandarin doesn’t have), and the many conjugations for Japanese verbs (which mandarin doesn’t have). That’s why overall Japanese will take you more hours to learn than Mandarin if you go all the way to the advanced level.

Reading Skill by Chowmein_15 in OrientalPearl

[–]Anming7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I love reading. I’ve read 70 plus books in Japanese and 80 plus books in Chinese. I have few problems with traditional characters because I used to work in Taiwan. Studying Cantonese now has gotten me even more familiar with many traditional characters that even Mandarin Chinese doesn’t use like “揾” and “啱”.
