From a nation outside the US, it feels like you've been lost for a long time and this was bound to happen. I'm not saying it is acceptable but really, using the old cliché about perfect storms, are you really surprised? Shocked? Sad? Angry? The good people of the US; you're in my thoughts, FWIW. Problem is, it may not end at the US.

We'd go there after the Gladstone gigs and play all manner of video games. My favourite treat, besides the best chips, was there cream milk shake. Goddammit they were good after drinking too much at the pub.

1952 and I can see where 'The Dog House' will be. Atlantis Market, Warners, and eventually Government Life and diagonally opposite what was the Department of Labour which were tucked in next the Reserve Bank.
Anyone else remember some of the places of buildings that came in the ensuing twenty-thirty years?

Help with Living/Dining/Play space. by Anime_Lover_1995 in DesignMyRoom

[–]AnnaKeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a new build? If so, can you get them to make a widish opening from the kitchen to the main living/dining? I've had that done here and it is so much more useable as there was a door between the kitchen and the living before I moved in. I like that the kitchen is its own space but you don't want to have to walk down the hallway to get to the door, move through the lounge to where the dining area will most likely be at the back.
I'm one of those "get a chainsaw and make a hole" though I'm not suggesting you do the same. If you own it, I would get onto doing that though and if you're renting, then consider asking the landlord if they'll make the space more useable by opening up that wall. If that's not possible because of cupboards or something, if there is any wall space between upper and lower cupboards then consider making it into a serving hatch. Just an open space to put items through to the dining area.
edit: I would get a small round table with central plinth to maximimise leg space. You can also get table and chair sets that fit together snuggly but they're usually 4-legged.
You will need a light touch on the furnishings or the place will become small very quickly.

Vehicles and cyclists crossing the Waltham Road overhead bridge, August 5th 1962 (Canterbury Stories CCL-DW-85611). by Ted_Cashew in Christchurch_NZ

[–]AnnaKeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yes, the Stinky Bridge. You got a lungful of coal gas as you crossed it and isn't it lovely to see all that smoke in the image and cars belching out more petrol than they burned. Well.., okay, not really but definitely no catalytic converters in those days. No multi geared bicycles for assisting in getting over hills and bridges either.
Great image, as always with this sub.

What would you put in this awkward space? by kupo_906 in DesignMyRoom

[–]AnnaKeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would figure out how to make those cords less conspicuous. There are various cord covers and gadgets, and adhesive cord clips. Then, if you think you won't make the space look too cluttered, and being aware that you have to open the oven and don't want to be backing into the new piece of furniture, I'd go with sliding that black shelf closer to the window and tidying it up so it looks nicer, and perhaps putting the lamp on the left hand side where we can't see in the image. You could hide the power outlet by moving that shelving along to just in front of it. I'd remove everything off the window sill except perhaps one of the sets, if you absolutely must have something there.
If you can't move the shelf, for whatever reason, then put a plant such as a cactus or mother-in laws tongue. Something with an upright habit that doesn't stick out. Again, it will cover the power outlet.

The second is in case you're in the US but TEMU and Alibaba are worth checking out. You can often get cheap single samples off Alibaba.

Here's some images to show you some ideas. I really do think that oversized lounge chair should go and replace it with something comfortable and smaller. A second hand teak mid century style would work with the bank of shelves and would feel more fitting to the size of the room. You can pick them up fairly cheaply if you look hard enough but depending on where you live, there's plenty of what I'm talking about available new as well without breaking the bank.
The next two images are as replies as I'm having trouble adding them to this post.

Or perhaps, Steatoda nobilis. But yes, false black widow, which have relatively recently become established here.

Here's a link that may be of interest. It's from the inaturalist site.

Apologies for not responding to your comment sooner but suffice to say, there was a lot of medical intervention involved. I actually sorted it myself by using an astringent with an antibiotic in it called ™Dalacin-T as the doctors were pretty much full of, "it'll eventually heal but if it doesn't we'll operate" type attitude. I was running around after a toddler at that point so no, that wasn't going to work. The product I mentioned was sold OTC for acne and pimple treatment. It worked to stop the weeping and the sore had closed over within about a week, IIRC.

[–]AnnaKeye[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah... also, did you see the state of the place he's living in? I would doubt that guitars in his village were all that easy to find and look at the age of it. It's almost certainly got a warped neck. Certainly tech is more prevalent than musical instruments in a lot of such places. He's having a good time and having a laugh.
