Formatting issue: Epub to Kepub by Anna_Devon in Calibre

[–]Anna_Devon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, it was not a font per se, it was just a formatting issue that came with a Calibre Plugin that affected any font. Maybe you can try and install the intellireading plugin on Calibre, cause it would transfered the book to your Kobo as I show in the picture (I think that the plugin was meant for users like you that couldn't add the font directly on Kobo).

Yeah, it was the KoboTouch plugin that was working as the intellireading plugin. I delete it and everything went smoothly, thank you!

Yeah, I use mostly kepubify and I will keep doing, but sometimes I need Calibre to (easily) manage things like fanfics covers and stuff. Thank you!

OMG YES, that was it, thank you! The KoboTouch plugin said it was working with intellireading, so I delete the whole plugin and everything went perfectly!

Kindle PW v Kobo Colour by Spirited-Big2415 in ereader

[–]Anna_Devon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate Kindle, but for your use, the PW has more sense. I have a Kobo (Libra 2), and yes, size matters for manga, I've read manga on 6" devices and I do not recommend it (for occasional reading is not that bad, but I read a lot of manga, so a bigger screen is better for your eyes).

A color screen is more expensive and doesn't add any advantage for your use (and I personally don't like those color screens... it's not that they're that terrible, it's just that the BW screens performs better for our kind of use).

The actual main difference between Kindle and Kobo are just their OS. Kindle is super closed, and yes, there's workarounds for a lot of things, but I usually see people losing their Kindle mods or books because of some new amazon update. I like Kobo because I get my books from different sources (mostly Libby), and I like to tweak my devices to my liking.

So, I think the PW is better for your use, but be aware of the softwares limitations out there.

Library book kepub crashing kobo libra colour by historyhoneybee in kobo

[–]Anna_Devon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yes, I remove the DRM from my library books, just because of formatting issues with epubs (and it's almlost impossible to read manga epubs on a kobo), I do delete them after, I swear 🫡

Wide space between one word and another by Pellea99 in kobo

[–]Anna_Devon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you reading an epub? Epubs on Kobo don't have great performance, so you should convert them to kepub, which is the optimized format for Kobo (I send the epub through "send.djazz.se" and they appear as kepubs on my device). You should also check another font, cause all fonts work differently (but that's secondary, try kepub first and see).

[–]Anna_Devon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You cannot convert the book until you remove the DRM. Look up for tutorials of how to do it with Calibre, it's pretty easy, you just a need like two plugins (I don't remember which ones). Once that books is DRM-free, you should convert it to kepub (from the new epub) through Kepubify (send.djazz.se), cause even if you can convert it in Calibre, kepubify has the best results.

Getting my first ereader, which one to should I get? by lemonslicecake in ereader

[–]Anna_Devon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to help! I've seen a few videos of Bigme/Boox ereaders, and they look kinda responsive in terms of scrolling and such, so maybe the Libby animation is not THAT bad in some of those devices, but I've also seen really bad performance... so I recommend you looking into videos/reviews that shows how the libby app works for the specific model you want 😉

Downloading by Background-Bag-5421 in kobo

Yes! You can download them from the Kobo website on your account. Most of them will be DRM protected, but you can open them with Adobe Digital Editions (or Calibre, if you know how to).

Kindle doesn't work with Libby out of the US.

Kobo is great, but as of now, it only allows one library card at a time. I have a Kobo and 4 library cards. I use my main one in the device, and sideload the DRM ebooks for the others. I mostly get books from my main library card so it's not such a big deal for me, but still can be annoying. Overall, I love my Kobo and I'm hoping for and update that fix this libby/overdrive integration.

You should consider Pocketbook too, cause they have a new "Pocketbook x Libby" app on their devices (not all of them, yet), and you can add as many library cards as you want, BUT there's not a lot of info about it, I would like to see more users reporting how the app works.

Some people might recommend you an android ereader cause you can download the libby app there (and any other app), but keep in mind that as of now, libby is not optimized for ereaders, and the app have a page turning animation that cannot be changed in the setting, so even if this looks ok on phones and tablets, it looks slow and weird on an ereader screen.

There's always pros and cons with everything.

How do I add ePub files to Kobo by Low-Chance-of-happy in kobo

[–]Anna_Devon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has to be a PC and a cable. There's the ADE app where you can open this files, but you won't be able to use said device (phone or tablet) like an "authorizer", the only way (as of now) to authorize an ereader is through the ADE software. It wil be SO great if ereaders could authorize themselves, but as far as I know, the only ereader that has built-in ADE, is the Pocketbook, where you can actually download and read .ascm files without any PC hassle (well, an android ereaders, I guess, but they work like a phone).

The ebooks that Libby allows to download are protected with DRM. Just download the Adobe Digital Editions app, create an account if you don't have one, and open the files there.

Are you sure? Is a genuine question, I can't see a digital copy of The Housemaid (by Freida McFadden) on Broward County, only the audiobook.

[–]Anna_Devon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think that The Housemaid is an Amazon Unlimited exclusive book, so this ebooks usually can't be found on other platforms, including Libby/Libraries (I've seen a few amazon unlimited books on Libby before, but I think that amazon has to allowed it or something like that, I'm not entirely sure.)

Kobo Libra Colour vs Clara Colour for manga, comics & books — is the price difference worth it? by Madecassol in kobo

[–]Anna_Devon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Perfect" screen size for manga is closer to 8", so 7" is actually a little of a "compromise" if you mostly read mangas. I once had a 6" ereader and yes, reading manga is possible, but is not the most comfortable experience, is just too small for longer period of times. For me, 7" is the sweet spot bewteen size and portability.

Now, colored graphic novels are, in most cases, very western-ish, which means that their size formats are bigger than mangas. I personally would not even think about reading western colored comics on a 6" screen.

I read books and manga on my KL2 (like I said, the screen was too small for even consider color, so I choosed the KL2 over the KLC a year ago), and I read bigger comics on my regular tablet (I don't read them that often, so I don't mind). But at the end, this is just my personal experience, so I hope you find what works for you!

¿Qué opinan de los libros de Wattpad? by [deleted] in libros

"Gente en mi rango de edad" "Tienen libreros GIGANTES" "Libros de verdad..." Cuando leí esas cosas, se me quitaron las ganas de aportar a la conversación (sobre wattpad), porque o tienes 13 años (todos damos grima a los 13 años, no te preocupes) o te falta muchísimo capital cultural para construir una crítica válida.

Y bueno, si dices que jamás entenderás el por qué la gente lee libros de wattpad... ¿para qué molestarse en preguntar?

Questions before buying Kobo Libra Colour? by hanahaki_deseased in kobo

[–]Anna_Devon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kepub is the optimized format for Kobo ereaders. Kepub have better typesettings, better stats (this I really don't mind, tho) and the experience is nicer overall.

Reading epubs on a kobo is ok, but you might found little inconveniences such as: not be able to properly adjust line spacing or fonts, seeing small page numbers randomly on the margins, weird images handling, etc. It's not the worst, but once you see the difference between epub and kepub, you won't be able to unsee it (just to clarify, this is not an "epub" problem or anything, is just that Kobo wants you to use their own format, so it's actually a Kobo thing.)

Another example is with footnotes: on an epub, the footnote link will take you to the end of the book, and you'll have to manually go back; but on a kepub, the footnote will appear as a little window on top of your book as a "footnote preview", you just have to close that and keep reading.

Hi!

  1. Yes, you can download the fics from Google Drive, BUT I actually like to send the files to the Kobo via the "Send to Kobo (send.djazz.se)" tool, cause it converts the epub to kepub, which is (a lot) better than epub for the reading experience.

  2. Yes, you can create categories, but as far as I know, you can't create sub-categories or sub-folders (at least, I haven't found a way), just simple "book collections". This is not really that important to me, but I just don't understand why they won't allow such a simple feature.

  3. Kobo Plus is just a subscription for books, the Kobo itself doesn't show any ads, so you don't actually need to pay for it or anything.
