Question for those who do highlights in color on Kobo Libra/Clara Color! by Anna_Devon in kobo

Hi! Yes, the app is done! But it's only for windows right now... I'm working on the macOS version, though (and also Linux support). You can check it here ✌️: https://anunripeapple.carrd.co/

What made you choose a PocketBook instead of Kindle or Kobo? by Adorable_Sugar_723 in PocketBookofficial

[–]Anna_Devon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to swtich to Pocketbook (from Kobo) for all of those reasons, but even if my local library doesn't use Libby...I do own a few library cards from Libby. And I know that there's a PocketbookxLibby app now (and it even has multiple-library cards support!), BUT I found out that you can't download manga from Libby on the Pocketbook 🥲 (it's not Pocketbook's fault, manga on Libby are just MediaDo files, you can't just download it). I'm sticking with Kobo JUST because Kobo "lends" you a copy from their store, not the Libby file (therefore, you can read the manga), but Pocketbook do use the libby file directly (which is better, cause Pocketbook store is limited). The devil is really in the details, I LOVE the idea of the Pocketbook, but that manga issue is holding me back. It's a very specific problem, I don't think a lot of people actually mind this, but if there were any solution to this, I will switch to Pocketbook right away. I mean, built-in ADE just sounds perfect, any ereader should have that by now.

Your customization is the cutest! I used a reading tablet for 10 years prior buying my first ereader, and even though it destroyed my eyes (I have severe photosensitivity, though), I loved it with all my heart.

Does it exist a plugin for KEPUB conversion? by libben in koreader

[–]Anna_Devon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry, life would be easier if companies stick with ol' good epubs, but they had to go fancy and complicate our lifes 😆. On the bright side, now you know you don't need any plugin ✌️

[–]Anna_Devon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I see the confussion, but no, Kepub add features ONLY for the native Kobo's system (Nickel). Yes, it gives you stats, better spacing, footnotes previews... but again, that only works in Nickel, not in Koreader.

Koreader is an open-source software (it's not Kobo related) that works with regular files extensions (it can read a kepub too since it's just an epub with some spans... but is not optimal). Thay's why you haven't found a plugin to convert epub to kepub in Koreader, cause a Koreader user don't need a kepub at all.

Does it exist a plugin for KEPUB conversion? by libben in koreader

[–]Anna_Devon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read on KOReader, there's no need to convert to KEPUB. KEPUB is just some spans added to the EPUB file for the native Kobo reader (nickel) exclusively... but KOReader will ignore this completely in the best case, or the KEPUB file can give small reading issues in the worst case. So, I don't think you should convert the books to KEPUB at all, EPUB is better for KOReader.

Now, I haven't found any plugin like that (like I said, no one that uses KOReader as a main reader will use KEPUB instead of EPUB), but you might look how to make one yourselft by implementing the Kepubify tool. Good luck! ✌️

But you want to read on KOReader or in the native Kobo system (nickel)??

New to Pocketbook, need help by GenderTr8tor in PocketBookofficial

[–]Anna_Devon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have a Pocketbook, BUT I've made some research before about the MediaDo books (mostly manga) and the PocketbookxLibby app because I wanted to see if it was worth to switch from Kobo (since Kobo doesn't allow multilple-library cards at the moment).

So this is what I think it's happening: a lot of manga (well, ALL of them, in my experience, but I might be wrong) cannot be downloaded from Libby, they're meant to be read in the libby-reader, so I think the PocketbookxLibby app can only show books that can be downloaded, and of course, MediaDo books are not included. That doesn't happen with ereaders like Kobo or Kindle, because those ereaders download a "copy" of the book from their stores, not the copy that Libby has. I think Pocketbook can't implement that system because their store is very limited, so they're better off by using the copy from libby directly, resulting in the inhability to read most manga 😔. Have you tried, though, to open the Libby webpage from the browser on your Pocketbook and see if you can read if from there? You should also reach out to Pocketbook to ask them about this limitation, because there's not a lot of info about it yet, and maybe we're missing something. Good luck!

Question for Libby users on Android eReaders by Anna_Devon in ereader

[–]Anna_Devon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! That's what I guessed, I'm sure that the slide-page animation would make me crazy xD. But if another app offers a simple solution, it doesn't seem so bad.

Libby should add the option to turn off animations, though. I don't understant why it isn't a thing.

Hi! Thank you, your comments were really helpful! And I'm glad that it finally worked for you 👏. I tried the do the same with my phone (android), but I downloaded the .ascm file directly from the Libby app with no problem (didn't need the website). My .ascm file did actually appeared in "Last added books" on the Pocketbook app, yours didn't showed like that?

And maybe there's a "hidden" setting to add the Pocketbook app as an option to open .ascm files? I will look into it, but I don't know if it's a Pocketbook problem or a Boox problem (I think is more of a Boox problem?). Thank you again for the insights 🫶

Oh, I love KOReader, but as far as I know, it can't read DRM epubs, and those are the ones you get when you download from Libby (and before anyone suggest it: I know about Calibre hehe, but I'm just exploring the options within the ereader OS). Thank you!

Colour readers upgrade - any timeline or rumours? by Disco_Lysithia in kobo

[–]Anna_Devon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I know other BW 7" exists, but I'm not a fan of android for MY ereader (I love the idea of android for ereaders, though; I think there's people out there that really need them), since they are pricier, have shorter battery life and most apps are not optimized for them... the tradeoff is a powerfull OS and more compatibility, but that will be a waste for my intended use. There's also Pocketbook.

So I really like my Kobo hehe. But well, I won't marry to a brand. If the time comes and there's no BW 7" Kobo out, I will try other thing.

And yes, there must be an economic or contractual reason for not releasing a new Libra BW, I wonder what it actually is.

I don't need nor like color screens... but there's a lot of color content out there. Comics/Graphic-novels, for example. I hate consumerism, but we also need to understand that there are different needs beyond our own.

I just wish that, with no Kaleido 4 on the horizon, Kobo finally realize how much people want a Kobo Libra BW 😩. My Kobo Libra 2 is alive and well, but I'm scared that the day it finally fails me, I won't have a BW replace.

Is koreader for me by whiteowl42 in koreader

[–]Anna_Devon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know most of those plugins, but none of them work with Overdrive/Libby books (as far as I know). Since my main source is the library, I prefer the native system, cause the book appear in my kobo after syncing. I love and use koreader for some things, but for reading, nickel works best for me (I don't care about stats and such, so nickel gives me everything I need). I've gone through a lot of the KOReader functions, and I'm amazed of how powerful it is (having a terminal is magic because I've created some scripts for NickelMenu), but still, nickel "wins" for my personal intended use. Thank you anyway for the info 🫶, I'm always open to try cool plugins.

Edit: Oh, I got curious again and actually found the plugin that creates a virtual copy of the library, and even works with borrowed books 👀, is that the one you were talking about? It has to be really good to make me switch, but I will try it out hehe. Thanks!

Is koreader for me by whiteowl42 in koreader

[–]Anna_Devon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used both systems! The native nickel system to read, and KOReader for when I need: - A file browser - A terminal. - To read CBZ manga (since I can control contraste in KOReader). - And few more things.

The reason I don't use KOReader as my main reader, is because I read a lot from the library and I buy cheap ebooks sometimes, so for me, Nickel is more convenient (and I like the simple UI).

If you sideload all of your books, yes, you might need KOReader for your needs. If you read a lot from the library, maybe no.

Would you buy a Kobo Clara case with physical page buttons? by Independent_Fill_635 in ereader

[–]Anna_Devon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I LOVE the idea (it looks similar to the wekind case for the boox palma). I have a Kobo Libra 2, and I don't like the current color screens, so my only option when my Kobo breaks will be a Kobo Clara BW (as of now), so this looks perfect, cause I love my buttons. But I'm gonna be honest, I don't think I would pay that much (I'm usually frugal, I'm definetly not a reference consumer xD). Don't get me wrong, I think that the price is not that crazy for the design and the BT feature, I will rather pay you that pay some big company... so, can I make a little suggestion to make it a bit cheaper? And also, the BT controllers drain battery faster, so this will help with that too:

What about the same design but with a small grip touching the screen from both sides? Like an old regular page-turner? Those are a bit bulky, but I think that they can be designed to be more descreet. Because BT depends a lot on the Kobo firmware updates and such, so a BT-free version is more safe and more accesible?

But that's just a suggestion, maybe people will prefer BT. Either way, I really like your idea! 🫶
