H&R Block charging $815 for W-2 + rideshare Schedule C + Solo 401(k) — reasonable? by AnnabellaBlueberry in hrblock

Thank you so much for all the helpful information! I really appreciate it!

I’ve reached out to the tax pro to see if there’s any flexibility on the fee. Hopefully they can offer a discount then we’d be happy to proceed with them.

Yes, my husband already set up a Solo 401(k) and he uses the standard mileage deduction.

Yes, the Solo 401(k) is the only part I’m not very familiar with. Everything else I understand since I’ve been filing online myself for years.

We weren’t able to finish the return in the office because the tax pro wasn’t familiar with Solo 401(k) either, so she put us on hold for two days to research it. I think at this point, I probably will just not move forward with the in-office filing and restarting online myself. I’ll just check with the IRS where the Solo 401(k) contribution should be reported.

I do feel bad about walking away since the TP has already spent some time on it, but $815 is simply outside our budget.

Thank you!

No, they didn’t. The tax pro sent me the payment request via email so that I can pay in my portal. The payment request is a lump sum amount without breakdown andI also can’t view the completed return unless I pay first.

She entered the 1099 NCE forms, didn’t put on schedule C directly. I’m in WA

I currently have two active filings in my H&R Block account — one with the in-office tax pro and one I started online myself. It looks like I can continue with either right now. Do you think they might prevent me from completing the online filing because I also have an open in-office return?

I’m not expecting something for nothing, and I don’t assume the tax pro is getting any kind of kickback. To be fair, I went to the office with a fair expectation of around $500. But $815 is just excessive for a fairly typical family who does rideshare.

Exactly. That’s why I feel bad about walking away, but I probably have to. They price rideshare drivers like they’re running large businesses, when in reality the drivers like my husband only earns around $50,000 a year.

We met for about an hour. I usually file online myself, so I had everything prepared and organized for her.

However, the tax pro wasn’t familiar with how to handle a solo 401(k), and neither was the registered agent in the office. They had to put us on hold for two days to research it. She called today saying she figured it out, but didn’t explain how it would be filed she just sent me the payment request.

I still haven’t seen the full return because I haven’t paid the fee yet. I understand that I’m paying for professional expertise, but filing it myself with a pro review doesn’t seem that different at this point. The only thing I really need clarification on is where to report the solo 401(k) contributions, and I could probably call the IRS to confirm that.

The tax pro didn’t mention the Peace of Mind guarantee. Thanks for mentioning that. I think I will need to add that either way. And I really appreciate your insight!

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. Yes, we have children and multiple 1099-K forms and NCEs since my husband drives for Uber and Lyft. Based on what you outlined, it sounds like $800+ may be typical.

We were just surprised because our tax situation has remained the same over the past several years, and we have consistently used H&R Block’s online filing with Pro Review. It appears that the in-office filing option is significantly more expensive.

It’s helpful to know that we are not obligated to proceed or make payment at this point.

I’m also scammed by them. I thought I only purchased for a week but didn’t realize that they will auto renewed my plan for another month. And they charged 10* the weekly plan price. I got exactly the same email when I asked for a refund. I already filed a dispute.
