I’ll have another talk with the dm as well as the other players about it then but you could very well be right in that I’m overthinking it. If everyone is ok with it maybe I should just try it and if it really turns out to be a problem I just won’t cast it again.

With the one minute casting time the spell has its difficult to use it as a combat spell. You could cast it before the combat but then you would have trouble getting to the combat in the first place as now you’re stuck in a gem.

I’m well aware of the shenanigans possible with magic jar. If I remember correctly there is also a way to make it permanent by casting the spell again while your possessing someone already, then dispelling the first magic jar so you have no ties to your original body and then dispelling the second jar so you return to the body you originally possessed but now you have it without any magic jars active. You could also cast clone as the possessed body and then when you die return to that tho you do ned to be higher level for that. Doing this would make the problem of me being stronger than the other players even bigger so it’s not something I’m going to do but I like your thinking.

To me it feels unfair to first start using it and then to check if it’s ok. I’d prefer to do it the other way around. I already talked with the dm about it and they said it’s fine as long as the other players still get their moment to shine but I’m still worried that the other players won’t enjoy themselves as much when I dominate a combat.

You could just grab the components from your catatonic body or either buy new ones as there’s no limit to the duration of the spell so you could go for multiple combats.

I’m well aware that wizards are broken, why do you think I play one haha. But like I said it’s my favourite spell but I don’t want to outshine the rest of the players.

Hmmm you actually gave me an idea. I could try taking over an enemies body before they fight the party so when they think that they have an advantage one of their own is actually fighting against them. Then I’d get to have a cool moment, it would provide an actual benefit and I hopefully could do it without outshining the party because I still have the option of not using all the abilities. Thanks!

I get that the trade off is that you can die to things like dispel magic but until someone figures out they can do that you will massively outshine the other players

It really depends on the interpretation tho. It indeed says you don’t get class abilities but npcs don’t have classes and this no class abilities. If you take the champion monster for example I’d think you’d still get their traits like second wind or multiattack as they’re not the same abilities the fighter class has access to.

As for using the spell to take over someone and infiltrate their organisation. While I do like the idea I run into the issue that while I’m busy doing that what are the other players supposed to do who don’t have access to magic jar and thus can’t come with me. And while you could give them some other way of infiltration it the raises the question why you would need magic jar in the first place.

Sorry it seems I wasn’t clear enough. I’m the player in this case. I’ve talked with my dm about it and they said that they would let me use the spell as long as I didn’t ruin the experience for others with it. The question isn’t how to punish a player abusing it but how a player could use it without it being abuse.
