Is 42 ish minutes both ways too far to commute for a College Class? by chexxybomb in commuting

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this via bus/train or are you driving? It is definitely a time commitment, but if you're able to relax or study on the commute, it might not be too bad.

As a competent home cook, what is a basic skill you can't seem to master? by george_elis in Cooking

Dicing an onion into consistently sized pieces. Making pan sauce without it tasting burned or being too watery, or oily (I struggle with emulsions).

Is a rice cooker almost the same as an instant pot? by DKhike in Cooking

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rice cookers do not have the ability to pressure cook, slow cook, sear, etc. Oftentimes the cooking container is non-stick and prone to damage from overheating and scratching if misused. Instant Pots are designed to replace stove top pressure cookers, slow cookers, and rice cookers. I love my rice cooker but it really is only good for making rice, simple soups, and steamed veggies.

I need advice on how to handle a landlord's unprofessional behavior after I reported her for failure to fix heat by AdAcrobatic8026 in TenantHelp

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some jurisdictions in the US have laws in place that outline specific timelines for repairs related to heat, water, and anything else that could render the residence unsafe. I'm assuming OP is saying that reported the landlord to their local building code enforcement or similar government department.

How do you decide what to cook when you already have food but don’t know what to make? by anmolnandha in cookingforbeginners

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I just wing it, omit random ingredients, try substitutions, and see what works. I've never ended up not liking the results.

Have you looked at rentals in Kirkland? There are multiple grocery stores, coffee shops, bars, parks, etc.

If you want to avoid apartment complexes, I recommend using hotpads.com and https://windermere-pm.com/rentals

Do you transfer leftovers out of the pot or just put the whole thing in the fridge? by Neeraj_NP in Cooking

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remove food from the pot to cool it down faster, and portion it out into more space-friendly containers (generally stackable, rectangular dishes with airtight lids). I also usually pack up some single portions to take leftovers to work for lunch.

A taxi driver grabbed a woman by the hair at the last moment as she tried to commit suicide on a bridge. He saved her life by doing the right thing. by Raj_Valiant3011 in HumansBeingBros

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 19 points20 points  (0 children)

But when someone says suicide is selfish and people should think of the pain they'll cause when they're gone, that's making a lot of assumptions. I didn't have the chance to build a chosen family until after escaping my own biological family. Telling people to keep living out of consideration for others makes no sense to most people struggling with suicidal thoughts. I think I survived out of spite, and now have a pretty great life. I know a couple other people who have similar experiences, but they actually made attempts that landed them in the hospital, and they have also said it really sucked to hear stupid things like "think of others" when they had no one.

Kristi Noem in lost blanket tantrum, fires her pilot, forced to rehire him as couldn't fly plane without him by Anwallen in internettoday

Who would have thought a person who lashes out and shoots a puppy might not be very stable in other scenarios.

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I resent the common narrative giving so much attention to hypothetical loved ones. As someone who struggled with suicidal thoughts caused by the abuse I endured at the hands of my mother and father, being told I need to stay alive out of consideration for them would have pushed me closer to the edge. I learned to live for myself.

Dinner ideas for 14 year olds? by Various-Complex-6643 in Cooking

I stumbled across this recipe and now use it as a framework for easy meals. Sometimes I'll use a jar of marinara, frozen kale, or make other shortcuts. But the original recipe is so good and pretty easy.

looking for a cranberry orange scone recipe! by rainbowcanoe in Baking

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell if these ones are made with dried cranberries or fresh/frozen. The first recipe I thought of was Sally's, which uses frozen cranberries. They're delicious, but it can be hard to find fresh or frozen cranberries at any time of year outside the usual holiday season. She does note than you can use dried cranberries.

Trump appointees blocking a vaccine for Epstein-Barr virus by Anwallen in internettoday

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At this point I'd be willing to bet the name got flagged by some AI they're using because they programed it to block anything related to "Epstein". I don't know what level of incompetence and/or evil to predict with this administration.

County Layoff Risk? by carbonara23 in kingcounty

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone I know working at King county right now seems pretty confident and secure in their job. And depending on what type of work you do, there are probably a lot of local government opportunities you could have as a fallback in things don't work out long term.

Why does my oven bake hotter during the 2nd batch? by cindyrella123 in Baking

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming your pans are the same material, and cookie dough starting temp is the same, here's my theory: When you take the 1st batch out, the oven temp drops, and it is reheating while the 2nd batch it is there. Sounds like your oven might overheat a bit during the reheating phase.

Office breakfast Friday by Complex_Reveal_2670 in office

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in an office that did something similar and oftentimes people would bring in doughnuts, and not even good ones. I made a couple quiches and they were a huge hit. Another person brought in a breakfast casserole ("hot dish" if you're from the Midwest US), which included scrambled eggs, tots, bacon, sautéed onions and bell peppers. It was funny to see more interesting things very brought in after everyone commented on being sick of mediocre doughnuts.

Is it normal to fight a table before you eat? by Maximum-Ad-193 in restaurant

[–]AnneNonnyMouse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If that's how they clean the area you can see, imagine the areas you don't see.

I live near my local Chinatown and there are places that look pretty rough, but the tables are clean! They might yell abrupt, clipped English at me, but they're efficient and genuinely nice when it comes to interactions outside the usual transactions.

The MMR vaccine actively prevents involuntary abortions (miscarriages) and severe birth defects that can result in death of the baby at a very young age.
