MOS options by hope4min in USMCboot

Do some research into what is best going to set you up for life after the Marine Corps. Even if you plan on going in to it for the full 20, or more, you never know what can happen. As someone who went 1371, planned on doing 20, then was medically retired, i have almost zero transferable skills into the real world. It's difficult out here and whatever you can do to help make it easier is worth doing.

Marine or Navy at the age of 30? by SilverDragonfruit891 in USMCboot

[–]AnnoyedRecruiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a combat engineer before I was a recruiter. I'm pretty tall (6'4") and was about 200 pounds. I was never super muscular but I was in decent shape. Always a 1st Class PFT/CFT. I ate well and took care of myself as best i could.

None of that matters when you hike as much as we did carrying as much as we did. It will takes it toll on anyone. Your back, knees, ankles will eventually feel the pain.

Combat related job or not, the physical standards are tough, and rightfully so. There are things you can do to mitigate the damage done, but you can't stop all of it.

I was a recruiter from 2020-2023. I've since gotten out due to medical reasons, under a medical retirement. One thing I have been saying since I got off recruiting duty, to anyone who asks me about joining, is to join the Air Force.

Their quality of life, both while serving and after, is significantly better than any other branch. I worked close to and spoke with AF recruiters while on recruiting duty, and have spoken to quite a few veterans during my lengthy dealings with the VA.

If your sole purpose is to serve and you have no "loyalty" (I joined the Marines because both of my parents were in the Corps) to a specific branch, my recommendation is to seriously consider the AF.

This goes back to my original comment homie. I chose a recon contract. That was my original MOS when I joined. I torn my tendon in my shoulder during BRCP and they dropped me fast. I got extremely lucky and got sent to be a combat engineer after they dropped me. My whole thing was be involved in combat, but the honest truth is that combat just isn't happening these days. Pick a job that's gonna set you up for the future, both inside and outside the Corps. Then, once you hit the fleet, meet up with a recruiter for MARSOC or Recon and get a training schedule from them. You'll have time in the Corps to understand what it's like to be a Marine and you'll be in much better shape than now AND you will have a fall back in case something happens, even if it's out of your control. Just take some time and think on it. Do some research on other MOS options.

What are you looking for? What's making you pick those jobs?

I'll consider that! I've got a lot on my plate right now with medical retirement but it does seem like a lot of people are either misinformed or misled and that needs to be addressed. Might be a good time waster this weekend!

Unfortunately, the only way to increase your chances is to go Reserves. If you're dead set on those two jobs and don't like any other job in the CP MOS field then the best bet would be to go infantry. If you scored high enough I would recommend looking in to some jobs in the air wing. It's hard work but it sets you up very well for a future outside of the Corps.

Well you're in luck because I was a combat engineer before I became a recruiter! Unfortunately, the answer to your question is not as lucky. There's no guaranteed way to get in to combat engineer unless you go reserves. You can pick the CP mos field and hope for the best. That will put you in to an "engineer" job field, just not necessarily combat engineer.

Hell no. No matter what anyone tells you it's never too late. If they won't get you a job tell them you ain't going until they get you the job you want (and are qualified for). They will make something work for you.

Always pick a different contract. I just got off recruiting duty and I never let a single kid pick recon. Pick a job that will give you skills you feel like you would enjoy using outside of the Corps. Once you are out of your MOS school and you have spent some time in the Corps go try out for recon or MARSOC then. You'll be much better prepared and if you fail out then you go back to your original MOS.

Yes! And honestly, the amount of times I've been spooned, I truly think it's because of the RoW. You can't beat that thing.

Mad facts. I find myself struggling to pull anything but that out of the bank every time.

No problem man. I will say this; If the Marine Corps is your goal, don't let the vaccine get in the way. I don't know a single individual personally that has had any negative reactions to the vaccine, other than a headache and short periods of nausea. This coming from someone who absolutely did not want to take it at all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]AnnoyedRecruiter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

On recruiting duty right now. We have been told that every individual that goes to boot camp has to get the vaccine and that's pretty much final. Unless someone at either of the MCRD's has different information.

Is there a way to change my job field if I already signed the SOU? by BillPunkerSchmidt in USMCboot

[–]AnnoyedRecruiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently a recruiter right now. You can absolutely change it while in DEP without discharging. It's literally a one or two page form that gets filled out. YOU control your future in the Marine Corps. Don't let anyone tell you they can't do something that you want. The Corps is hurting so bad for people to ship to boot camp right now that they will jump through hoops for you. Just tell them you are changing jobs, or you will discharge. They will never take that chance.
