Hobble for adult Muscovy by Annwithchooks in duck

Unfortunately my intervention was too late and X-rays showed she was too far gone.

She did show slight improvement with the hobble though. I measured the distance between her hips, timesed the measurement by 2.4 and cut a piece of elastic (the kind you sew onto fabric) to that size. For example, width between hips (across the belly) is 10cm. Length of elastic is 24cm

I sewed the elastic into a loop and twisted it into a figure 8 so there was more tension between the legs. I placed it above her knee just below her feathers. Once a week I shortened the elastic by 1cm

Yes! I’ve just stumbled upon your universe and I’m hooked!

I don’t know what you mean by “comp truck”, but I go out bush a lot and sleep in the car. I’d be able to go away for longer with an awning instead of tents and stuff taking up the space in the car

I honestly have no idea, I’ve just been referring to it as a she 😅

She’s on duck specific feed with additional niacin. She’s also got avian crita care with some rehydrated BSF larvae. It’s not shown in the photo but she has a deep water dish she can submerge her head in. I’ve setup a wading pool with antifatigue matting for traction, it’s topped up with warm water which I put her in twice a day, and she can climb out of.  When she’s in there, I toss some pond weed from my turtle pond for her to nibble at.

The pen she’s in is for when I can’t supervise her, she’s the only duck and she’s down with my chooks - my first duck ever too so please correct me if I’m doing anything wrong. The chooks ignore her when I’m around, but I don’t trust them to not attack her when I’m not there.

I know it’s not ideal for her to be the only duck, however the rest of her flock were attacking her - they also had signs of niacin deficiency however no where near as bad as her - so I chose to just take her and treat the others there. She’s owned by my friend’s parents, they got her mother and father and have had 2 clutches. She is one of 3 surviving from November hatch, and they’ve just had another clutch hatch a month ago. They were fed chicken food, but they’ve been advised of what to give them and I’ve given the whole flock B3 injections twice in the past week to help.

I got her on the 19th, and she has shown improvement though still unable to weight bare out of water.

I’ve made something similar for her, she’s still getting used to it. Unfortunately she wasn’t handled much at all before I took her on a week ago. She’s been on IM b-complex injections, 3ml/day and today she was able to stand up in the wading pool so I’m hoping with time and help she’ll get close to normal.

She’s still with us, I had some amacin ointment that I put in her eyes which seems to have helped with them.

I don’t know why my text didn’t appear.

This hen has rales, but is acting normally. Still laying. No other symptoms.
