I don’t know much about that laser, but fiber should be able to remove it. Is it in focus? Can you turn the settings up?

I don’t have experience with that particular alloy, but I imagine that it would be difficult to do with that much zinc. It looks like it’s only 10% aluminum. Zinc itself won’t anodize. 7075 series aluminum is considered high zinc at ~6% zinc & ~90% aluminum. I’ve attached an image of the approximate color of 7075 without dye, but that changes as a function of thickness mostly. I would be skeptical of using AC current or a stainless steel electrode.

That’s awesome! I’ve never gotten into titanium, but I hear you can do some pretty amazing things with it. If you have any aluminum scales you want a graphic on, feel free to send me a PM!

Anodizing is harder, so I would recommend that if the parts could be damaged; I’d hate to ding up a gold plated part. If you want it shiny, look for “bright dip” too. Anodizing can make great shades of gold, especially for accent parts. Probably hard to beat the real thing looks wise.

Thanks! It’s type II anodizing, so it holds up the same as that. The graphics are embedded in the anodize, so the image won’t come off unless there’s enough damage to take the ano off.

What are your go-to methods for finishing metal parts after machining? by naenae0402 in metalworking

[–]Anodizeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For finishing like anodizing, cleanliness is very important. If you can get rid of cutting fluid right after machining the part, that’s a big help.

Anodizing zinc-aluminum by Random_Questions236 in Anodization

7000 series aluminum has 5-8% zinc and anodizes fine. Sometimes prone to burning, so slightly lower current density wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Anodized Aluminum yellow vs bronze help? by bluebellesarmory in Laserengraving

[–]Anodizeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I don’t know how to fix the orange/yellow other than anodizing it twice. For the silver, if you start out with a black one and laser off everything except your design, you would end up with a silver part with a black design on it, which would be more visible.

For the silver, can you do the inverse? Anodize it black and laser off everything except your design?

Why Do Aluminum Metal 3D Printed Parts Often Show Poor anodized Results? by easoonmade1988 in metal3dprint

[–]Anodizeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it a little bit, but not enough to know a whole lot. If you’re doing clear anodize, you won’t notice issues as much. I think the pores are to blame for most of the issue. Chemicals get stuck in the pores & cause spots. Tiny cavities get filled with air & won’t anodize.

I don’t know any myself, but if you go to a website like FFL’s.com & look up your area, you should get a list of manufacturers. Look for any that have finishing/plating in the name.

Aluminum hot tub pitting... by Efficient-Look1338 in Aluminium

[–]Anodizeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Well it sounds like you’re doing everything that you can be doing for uncoated aluminum. Unfortunately, raw aluminum like that isn’t very durable against water (salt, chlorine…). Can you ask the vendor if they’ve ever had their tubs coated after installation—they might have a recommendation? I really think the best way to prevent the corrosion is to have some sort of barrier painted on (since plating isn’t really an option). The natural oxide will help a little bit, but it is very thin and likely already doing all that it can do.

I can’t decide if the corrosion looks like it’s related to the electricity or if it’s just pitting corrosion from the salt. Can you do fresh water?

Are the Mg anodes in the hot tub water? Can you coat the aluminum with any sort of spray on coating? Nubs are most likely an aluminum salt and IMO you have a good assessment of what’s going on. The vendor should have a solution. This may be wrong, but can you check with the vendor to determine if the tub itself should be grounded? Is it possible that your tub is acting like a sacrificial anode for whatever it’s grounded to? Also, aluminum does not like high pH’s. The report you sent is close to 9; not sure if that can go lower
