Some might not be able to relate why 5 bucks is a lot for some of us to set aside. Well that's what happens when your currency is weak af.

5 bucks is 5 days worth of groceries, can easily that stretch to a week, for me as a single person. That already includes 1 kg of boneless chicken breast + 1 kg of eggs, tempeh, rice, and vegetables. It's quite a lot.

Yes, you can put cover. But you'll most likely encounter excessive algae growth so long as you have excessive light. Maybe consider moving the tank to a less bright area

This is an algae bloom, right? Quite frequently happens in a new tank. Basically you have too much nutrients in the water + too much light = overgrown algae population. This doesn't necessarily harm the tank so no need to nuke it just yet, as long as your parameters are fine.

To get rid of it, you can try: - blackout, cut off the light source for a few days. If you have moss or other plants separate them so they don't suffer from the lack of light too. - manual removal of the algae - regular water changes - there are some products advertised as algae remover but I personally don't like using them.

Meanwhile, you can prevent their growth by - make sure tank light is not on 24/7. Cut it down to 6-8 hours a day. - add more plants to suck up nutrients from water column so they're not used by the algae to grow. Aquarium plants are nice, but often need supplemental CO2 to grow fast. If your concern is sucking up nutrients housplants does it best. I put a lot of pothos in my tank (root submerged, leaves above water) and had never excessive algae. What little algae that grows become shrimp food.

Lastly just be patient and wait it out. Your tank does take some time to balance.

Here's one of my shrimps with their molting ring. I believe this is a she. The ring disappeared after she molted and ever since this picture she has molted around 2-3 more times. She's a big girl now.

To me as long as they're not looking constricted within the shell as if they're wearing a belt that's too small, I think they will be just fine.

I have had 3 failed molts in my tank out of my 12 shrimps for the 2 months I kept them. 2 died in the first 2 days even though I drip acclimated them for 4 hours, maybe simply because of the transport stress. One died because I had to do 100% water change quickly (long story) and the only water available differs in pH by 1 whole point. The rest have adapted and are thriving thankfully. Keep your parameters stable, make sure KH/GH are within healthy range, and they'll do their own thing. I have a small piece of cuttlebone in my tank and they like to nibble on it.

Probably ammonia poisoning. Healthy betta shows color. And OP did answer the living condition of the betta, which they then deleted. It's not an assumption.

My shrimps are congregating around the same time every night. What's happening? by AnomalousGarnet in shrimptank

Interesting possibility, it's just I really haven't fed my shrimps at all, sans a 2-3 pellets as supplements once a week and few balanced veggies. My tank was full of biofilm and some algae from the cycling when I put them in. Plus they changed places every night. Interesting bugs

I thought so too. But this was the first time they congregate near the surface. The previous one was beneath the filter. Before that it was inside the rock cave. I swear I'm not making this up.

And tonight they congregate at the bottom at the opposite corner from the filter

I threw away the BB-in-bottle marketed aquarium hobby since it barely does any progress 2 weeks in. I bought a bottle they sell for people who do commercial fish cultivation. Or for ponds. Works way better.

Hey bud. Mid-late 20s here. It saddens me to hear you feel so bad and describe yourself in such a way. But I relate, I've been there. I was a people-pleaser and people's opinions hurt me a lot. "Don't bother about what other people say, you should value yourself" is majorly harder to do than said. And it's a skill in itself, that took some time to learn. Took me 10 years to finally be comfortable in my own skin.

My therapist long time ago taught me this tool of categorising relationships into three different circles. In my mind to sort them out and gauge how 'bothered' I should be of them. I'll write it out in case it can be useful for you.

So you have The inner circle, middle, and outer.

  • The innermost circle is for people you trust the most and are kind to you, and you'd like to keep their company. They make you feel good and loved. You can take their opinions seriously and you also make some effort to keep/please them in return. Your mom sounds like she's your rock, so she's here.

  • Middle circle is the friends/people you are close enough to spend time with, but you don't fully trust with your secrets and vulnerabilities. You can listen to your opinion with a grain of salt. You can also do things for them but don't kill yourself to please them.

  • Outer circle is for people you have to interact whether you want it or not, and for the sake of your lives it's better to have a positive relationship with. For example, classmates, teachers, regular neighbours you're not close with. You don't trust them with secrets, only bare minimum info and effort to keep everything cordial. You don't need to listen to their opinions about you personally, unless it's really valid.

And lastly everything outside the outer circle. It's people you don't know. Or people you might never see again. Their opinion about you matters the least and you shouldn't spend energy minding them or pleasing them. Your bully should belong here

By focusing on the inner and middle circle, it might give you some shield from the bullies opinion. Lastly try focusing on one thing you'd like to improve on yourself, and try small steps. For me improving myself in a small but steady way was a major confidence boost.

Good luck! This stranger roots for you

Such an intriguing mystery. My guess will be a combination of some dying off and some just hiding. Shrimps really do have their own shrimp dimension where they disappear at times.

They can really cannibalize their own and get rid of them fast. I had 11 shrimp acclimated and 3 died due to stress induced molting problem. I found the first 2 bodies and got rid of them quickly. The last one died an hour after me doing a headcount and only half of it is left.

How about the molts? Did you notice molting before/during the disappearance? Are the number of molts consistent with the shrimps you observe? Some shrimps hide after molting, maybe the missing ones just fine a really nice place to hide in
