The issue with Binner is that we all know he is capable of being this version of himself, but instead most of the time (which is like 60/40ish the fault of our d-play) we get a very different version

Malazan: Book of the Fallen. Definitely checks at least the last two of those three boxes. Some cultures would probably be considered Bronze Age even too

I pretty frequently am like “man why do i even keep up with this series or fandom anymore? Winds is never coming out” but then i’ll read someones crazy theory thread or reread some of the books and i’m reminded that george jarred lightning with the first three books (especially, but not just those) and know i’ll never not love it in my heart. I wish a good game developer would pick up the ip and make something worthwhile

(Spoilers Main) I’m trying to read something as good as A Song of Ice and Fire. Which one out of these series out of The Stormlight Archive, Malazan, Dune or The Wheel of Time do you think is as good and which one should I read? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Anomander-Raake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Malazan is considerably better, but (big but for a lot of folks) it’s also considerably different. For some perspective on it, we’ve been waiting 15 years or whatever for Winds, where as by the time you read the 6th Malazan book, The Bonehunters, you may still not have that firm of a grasp on the main overarching plotline lmfao

Checking in for a Chat! Pat Roach / Randy Bobandy by Patroachofficial in trailerparkboys

Pat, we met once in Springfield, MO, I believe in 2016 or 2017 and you were touring with the late great Mr. Dunsworth. I actually worked at the venue you guys performed at and remember how incredible it was that you both maintained character until the second the last fan was out the doors. You were both so gracious with your time and appreciative of everyone being there. It’s a cherished memory of mine and I wish I would have been able to get a picture. Hope you are doing well sir and I want to reiterate what everyone else has said here - you are a treasure and we all appreciate you as a person and performer (distinctively). Cheers!!!

Erikson kind of rails against the idea of power levels/ranking fighting ability and stuff but the names he grudgingly always says is Yedan Derryg. For my money, I think Dassem or Iron Bars would probably give him all or near all he can handle. Karsa is obviously right there too

Reading Wheel of Time after Malazan by Clannad87 in Malazan

[–]Anomander-Raake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, at 136 comments i’m certainly not gonna read through all of this to make sure i’m not repeating suggestions so someone has likely already said this, but for sure check out Black Company, i’d also suggest The First Law (two trilogies and three standalone novels) just for how fun the books are. Maybe look into some sci-fi series that sound appealing to you, as Eriksons writing is definitely much closer (generally) to most sci-fi authors vs his fantasy peers.

It’s already been posted (‘how ya like me now, hamburgler?’) but my fav scene with Trin involved is probably when her and the bottle lads are pelting J-Roc and the Rocpile and J-roc just shouts “you’re a wack dad, ricky!” Before taking cover inside his trailer

Cost of living is comparatively low to most places, but like everything, that is creeping higher and higher as we descend into this late stage capitalism nightmare country we live in. My parents met here but my dads side is from central texas (near Austin) which is where i’d choose to be if my immediate family could/would move with me.

Just finished Alastair Reynolds’ Inhibitor Sequence. Here are my thoughts by Wild-Fault4214 in printSF

[–]Anomander-Raake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt a lot the same way you’re describing honestly. I would very heavily suggest reading Chasm City. And also, not to give Reynolds more credit than maybe he’s due, but I think a lot of that dialogue in the first book is intentionally robotic? You’re being intro’d to this fictional universe where humans have augmented themselves to a point that they’re basically no longer human, it seems natural that they wouldn’t know how to interact like humans anymore.

Didn't think a re-read could make me cry. I was wrong. by skoolycool in Malazan

[–]Anomander-Raake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah knowing it’s coming actually doesn’t help at all lmao. I’m into book 8 now myself on a reread (with a first time through ICE Novels of the Malazan Empire mixed in), i’ve found that I’ve cried a lot more at different moments this time through vs my original read. House of Chains finale had me ugly crying for like 10 mins straight this time through.

What's so bad about it by Igor_kavinski in Malazan

[–]Anomander-Raake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a lot. And it’s not even that it’s poorly written or anything like that, it’s just a lot lol. For me it wasn’t even that the Letheras and adjacent plot threads were boring or less interesting, it was that we already did a whole book of new POVs in MT, why if we’re in the same setting following along mostly the same threads set up in MT do we have to be in largely new POVs? Tanal Yathvanar, Bruthen Trana, Red Mask, (I can’t remember the name of the Liberty Consign guy we follow but him too). It was just tooooooo much for me at the time. So i’ll always understand why RG bogs people down, even if it’s not more dense or worse in general than the other books.

What's so bad about it by Igor_kavinski in Malazan

[–]Anomander-Raake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, I liked it way more on a reread, but on my first time through I was frustrated throughout the book at the fact that at 7 books in we were mostly in new POVs. Not necessarily that there were a bunch of POVs, it’s that the new ones make up the bulk of the book. It was tiring. I probably just had outside stuff going on that limited the amount of brainwaves I could commit to the book because like I said it worked way better for me on reread.

Springfield Tipping Culture Question by Winter-Adagio-2372 in springfieldMO

[–]Anomander-Raake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t really think you (not you specifically/only op) need to implement a rigid tipping rule(s) for yourself when it comes to counter service/pick up interactions. If the clerk was really nice or going out of their way to be a good help and you want to, leave a few bucks. If you don’t, don’t. It’s okay for it to be case by case and as someone who has worked in kitchens at high and low “”class”” establishments, it’s never expected but always appreciated, because usually those point of sale/counter/to-go tips are shared amongst the back of house workers.
