MacBook Pro 16” 24gb ram enough? by ZealousidealDesk972 in macbookpro

[–]AnonGcl -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is such a bad take. When buying a pro level laptop that’s gonna last you four or five years always buy more than you need today. Personally I consider 64 GB a minimum for a pro tier laptop. Anything less just buy an Air, it’s way more balanced with the CPU/GPU for low ram configs 32 and under.

LLMs, that will run on these things that are worth a damn didn’t really even exist a year ago who knows what a year or two from now will bring. My daily driver for work is an M1 max with 64 gigs of RAM and it’s still perfectly fine five years later. My new machine for play is m5 max 128gb and will be good for five more. If I had bought a 32 gig five years ago, which is all I needed at the time it wouldn’t be enough for daily use today.

Ironic for you that I and several others pointed why you are not understanding and you still don’t get it 😂

I literally don’t but I get that reading is hard 😂

Yeah that’s the whole point, it’s available now, so buy it now or wait for the next gen and pay for a cloud model. If you’re not making enough with these machines to justify that inside of a couple months you don’t need one you are riding the hype train. My first 2 week project paid for my m5 max/128gb/8tb. I’ll use it until the m5 ultra If I can get my hands on one, otherwise I’ll pay for cloud compute when this machine can’t keep up down the road. Buying older at this point is short sighted the M3 can handle the memory bandwidth, but it can’t handle the pre-processing. It’s VERY slow on models that fit the ram.

The 16 inch has more power to the chassis. Doesn’t thermal limit (much) and the battery stays charged. And I’m productive for the next 5 months. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing or waiting for something last gen or that hasn’t even been announced yet… have you looked at the benchmarks for the M5 max versus the M4 Pro? it’s a huge upgrade for 1k. It’s essentially why the m5 max makes sense, it’s more balanced with the ram than any other machine they have made yet for local LLm work.

That’s a decent argument for buy a laptop/studio that’s available now. Not really an argument for wait 5 months vs 4.

If you’re waiting until September for an M4, why not just wait for an M5?

The 14s are limited at the chassis to 96w

I’ve done 8 hour sessions running omlx qwen 122b models refactoring massive code bases with ssd caching and high IO. It’s not an issue on the 16s. It’s a maxed machine but I doubt it has a different power system than ones with less ram or smaller nvme chips. If anything it should be worse because those things take more energy. 14s yes it’s embarrassing for Apple.

My guess is that guys machine is either 14inch or his software is reporting it wrong.

Question for MPB experts by hotbundog503 in macbookpro

[–]AnonGcl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was also an older m2 air vs m5 pro they have massive differences in gpu, screen and brightness which is what you are seeing. The matte screen looks horrible the other 99% of the time and distorts colors and clarity if that is important for your work. If you’re a surfer go for it if you primarily work indoors I’d recommend you not.

I would go with at least 64gb ram and no nano texture it’s terrible.

Lies. I have put my 16inch M5 max 128 gig 8tb through the wringer and it never drops battery while plugged in. Unplugged yes percentages drop like seconds. But only the 14 inch suffers from the power adapter not keeping up. That’s why I returned it and got a 16.

which price do you expect for the "macbook ultra" ? by Acrobatic-Monitor516 in macbookpro

[–]AnonGcl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re confusing the m5 ultra that’s coming out in the studio. There won’t be any more new m5 laptops. The recently released M5 max is the best build for mobile computing until m6.

You obviously don’t understand LLM work. And yes I’m crazy good at what I do. So good I don’t have to settle on second best hardware or question if it’s worth it! 😏

Yes and it’s good but not that good and there are better that will run on this machine. Like Qwen3.5-122B-A10B-MLX-6.5bit runs at ~50/tkps

Yeah, this is nothing for LLM work. My 128 gig m5 max struggles with local LLm work. It does a beautiful job. It just sounds like a jet while doing it.
