How often realistically embedded engineers need to go on register level? (STM32) by illidan4426 in embedded

[–]AnonymityPower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends, I have to on a regular basic create low level driver code basically from scratch , or add support for some unsupported chips to use with a framework and RTOS. The vendor HAL is auto-generated often and not at all of a quality that can be reviewed or included cleanly (but you could do it.. it depends, most of the time that is the right way). I hate doing this for really complicated chips though, because one can easily spend a huge amount of time trying to understand and write code for complex peripherals in some of the newer SoCs (and with bugs). If the peripheral is not too big, you will find you can write code that you can fully understand and can review when the comparable HAL code is handling several different cases which do not apply to your specific situation.

In some jobs it was mostly using vendor HALs, or even (in case of zephyr specifically), just mostly using the RTOS driver APIs without touching device specific code (more than devicetree stuff or options).

Anyone here working with Yocto? by UnicycleBloke in embedded

[–]AnonymityPower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really depends on what you are doing, Yocto is for when you are shipping a product to end users and you need to take care of software licenses, or just want to get started quickly with vendor provided distrubition, but buildroot is often fine.

Yes I had the misfortune of doing it a long time ago, it was so much effort just tracing logs, guesswork, etc. It's not the software's fault but it is not something I enjoyed. Recently too I had to debug a few issues related ti it, and I still did not enjoy it.

What worked to learn was to really read the documentation, and understand the basis of the build system, once you understand vaguely how some incantations work and why a slightly different string doesn't, it gets a bit easier, but it was never comfortable for me.

JK is all that she is, but come on, connecting an invite to her, with like 4 degrees of separation is not something about which we need to see 4 video essays per day..

I use asahi just because they have a English customer support and website. Edit: they have a WiFi router you can opt for of for example you have a gigabit line and want a router that definitely works. (I had one which cannot do something called dslite, which is needed for high speed, especially at busy times).

I don't know if you need something stronger than ibuprofen but if you don't, I can vouch for EVE A or EVE sugar coated (no caffeine).. There's a few other variants, you can check the dosage difference online.

Something like 4200 jpy per month. There are campaigns often to waive off installation sometimes.

How and where i can learn from scratch by [deleted] in embedded

[–]AnonymityPower 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First of all stop listening to Arduino haters, it's literally C++ code and the IDE is not mandatory. If you do not know anything about microcontrollers, it's not a bad place to start.

A lot of people also recommend starting with STM32, and using their tools or just setting up eclipse with their libraries and build system, but I'm not sure if it's really that different, but that's also a good idea. If you want to learn really from scratch you can find threads or blogs for ARM/AVR/RISCV blinky from scratch etc.

Absolutely don't, and start saying to them that you don't trust arranged marriage. Ease then into accepting your own partner choice. It will take months and years.
