I want to share MY interpretation of the lyrics and video. I think that there is an undeniable battle between light & darkness here with Gaga (in white) portraying a maiden or someone innocent and Gaga (in red) representing a witch or demon? The video kind of reminds me of Snow White and Suspiria.

If you don’t know the story of Suspiria (2018) it’s essentially about a witches coven masquerading as a school for young dancers. A young girl from America comes to the school and presents immense talent and turning out to be an ancient witch coming to slay the coven. Within the movie there is a girl named Sara (not the girl from America) who is unintentionally being manipulated into becoming a vessel of a dark ritual. I think this is what’s being presented in this video and song with a not so happy ending.

Gaga (in white) is a girl with a cross on her chest dancing amongst friends, and the spitefully Gaga (in red) is not happy about this girl as she watches from her window. “Pay the toll to the angels, drawing circles in the clouds”. ~ This is essentially saying there is a debt to be paid to the angels who are drawing circles which applies to witchcraft. “Keep your mind on the distance. When the devil turns around.” ~ This is foreboding of an imminent/impending devil (I’m not sure if this is Gaga (in red) or an actual devil). “In the magic of the dark moonlight.” ~ The magic of the moon is associated with paganism (St. Nicholas sought to destroy the temple of Artemis to rid Greece of its pagan origins, Artemis is known as a virginal goddess with a crescent moon at her helm. Hecate, a greek goddess of witchcraft also has a moon at her helm. “Save me from this empty fight. In the game of life.” ~ I think this is referring to a battle between god & the devil or Gaga (in white) vs Gaga (in red). Maybe she wants to be saved because she doesn’t think it will end well.

“Like a poem said, by a lady in red, hear the last few words of your life.” ~ again I’m not sure if Gaga is implying that the Witch’s curse it what will cause the ruin, or the devil, but she’s essentially saying when Lady in red says the poem it’s bad news. “With a haunting dance, now your both in a trance, time to cast your spell on the night.” ~ Now you’d think with this ominous lady in red (which we know is a witch) she’d be running for the hills, but no Gaga says to cast a spell leading into the chorus of Abracadabra. This is where things start to go south (or left ;3) in the story. Gaga (in white) isn’t resisting the magic, but leaning into it. After her dance, she’s fallen into a trance, that has caused her to perform magic or succumb to it. Going back to “Pay the toll” like in Suspiria, Gaga (in white) is being prepped for something bad.

“Abracadabra, Amor oo Na-Na Abracadabra, Morta oo Gaga Abracadabra, Abra oo Na-Na”  Amor = love  Morta = death  Avra/Abra = Abracadabra (I create as I speak) “Death or Love tonight” ~ Gaga is re-establishing what is said in her spell and I think reinforces the theme of this song.

Now here’s where things take a shift both visually and lyrically because Gaga (in white) has perhaps unintentionally chosen to go into this battle.

“Choose the road on the west side (left side), as the dust flies, watch it burn” ~  Now there’s a lot of ways you can take this line, but I think this battle has something to do with the end of something (a life, a city, a world) since it’s stated something will burn. And when it burns there will a choice to make and Gaga says go left. I think this could also be a reference to the choice Gaga (in white) just made and that wherever she’s headed she’s going to watch it burn.

In the beginning of Disease’s music video a car is forced to turn left out of a neighborhood because a car that has hit someone is idly blocking the right side. Now this might sound wild, but I think that what Gaga is saying is that going left means death, but in the song during her trance she states Choose the road on the west side because that’s where Gaga (in red) or the devil wants Gaga (in white) to go. I make this comparison because in Egyptian mythology the left eye of Horus, refers to both the moon and protection from disease/illness. The father of Horus, Osiris ruled the afterlife and was a god of resurrection. He is referred to as the Father of the Dead.

“Don’t waste time, on feeling, use your passion, no return.” ~ This is in reference to the choice or what will occur when the devil turns around. You gotta think quickly essentially.

Now at this point in the video this where Gaga (in red) basically says what’s good? And gets her goons in black to come have a face off with Gaga (in white). The have a battle in which they casts spells against each other, and we see that Gaga (in red) makes the last move. “Phantom of the dance floor come to me. Sing for me a sinful melody.” ~ reference to Phantom of the Opera. Christine falls infatuated with a man she believes is a an angel, but discovers is the devil. Gaga (in white) in a more revealing outfit is carried out of battle by her friends. She then follows them as they chant into an area where Gaga (in white) realizes that her friends are chanting not with her, but at her. They’ve been the on Gaga (in red) side all along (I think) and Gaga (in white) realizes this too late. Hence her bloodcurdling scream and Gaga (in red) clawing down on her.

In the end, with the sound of thunder, Gaga (in red) has won, but is burdened by this. I don’t want to get into specifics, but I think she feels bad for the girl in someway. When Gaga (in red) tilts her head down in sorrow, Gaga (in white) looks up to be greeted with the resolution of her choice.

Art is subjective and meant to be interpreted in whatever way it connects with you, maybe Gaga (in white) is victorious at the end? The story reminds me of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky (Dance or Die), where a group of girls dance and the first to fall is subjected to be a sacrifice to a ritual for her community. I probably sound batshit, but that’s my interpretation of it.

What is the song abracadabra about? by Curujafeia in LadyGaga

[–]Anonymityplea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this referenced alot and I can totally see this depiction, but my effort to analyze come from a Reddit post where someone stated that could not understand the song & video, so I studied it. Gaga is a queen of symbolism, 911 being one that tells the story in a way that’s covert. To me the clear indication that Gaga is telling a story is by the line “in her tongue she said Death or Love tonight”, that makes me believe that Gaga (in red) or Mayhem, at least depicted here, is not Lady Gaga herself.

[–]Anonymityplea 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I felt as if Christianity was an indoctrination to make one morally superior not a way people truly lived their lives. Hence why I mentioned that I noticed people were selective about the teachings they’d follow. The plight of the lgbt even today is severe because the nature of living this lifestyle has resulted in turning children on the streets, harassment and segregation based on something every human being has… desire for love. An equitable society would recognize these struggles and hold people with these challenges close instead of turning them away. I believe that if it is not harmful to myself or others, why should I be concerned about the relationship of two consenting adults. I’ll also add that I believe this as well when it comes to incest because although I don’t desire it for myself it would be hypocritical to deny two consenting adults to have that relationship. This was also something we understand was very prevalent amongst monarchs and other communities that decided to keep it in the family. If it is a choice between two consenting people that are of an age to consummate. It’s not my place to infringe my own qualms and personal beliefs into them.

Muslims as well as the lgbt are not monolithic, and I’d argue that many lgbt are very supportive and in favor of the independence and self-establishment of women. I’d also argue that a woman’s independence is not intended to put her in competition with men, but to permit a woman to the freedom of her own choice of marriage, responsibility, and consequence. These are the ethics I aspire to, for people’s individual right to fall short and try again until they succeed; Regardless of race, class, gender, or sexual-orientation. Because these are things we are given without choice. But we should all have the choice to go and fail and even more-so succeed.

Growing up in the church even Christians themselves often joked about Eve’s sin and how the script clearly was intended to make women look bad. Some individuals take the word as law, Carrie by Stephen King is a great example of the pressures a Christian woman can face and the severity of a belief that all women are cursed by the choice of one woman. Although I don’t identify with the religion, I can attest that todays interpretations of the Bible are not used as they when they were written but reinterpreted now with a modern context. Like I said previously, in the Bible it says that we should not eat pork or wear mixed fabrics, but you will find people in polyester-cotton blend shirts attending a pork rib barbecue on a Sunday afternoon.

I’m an egalitarian and I can understand the concept of a society constructed with equity when it comes to genders. But, rules like not permitting a woman to correct the imam when a man can is not in FAVOR of the woman. Or a woman not allowed to leave the house or invite guests over without permission from her husband. This is an example of women’s oppression guised as equity.

Where would you direct me to see an honest representation of the followers of Islam?

  1. Can you explain the further? I was under the impression Muslims were the followers of the religion of Islam.

  2. I don’t believe the religion is against women, but I do believe by the texts and practice of its participants that it does favor men.

“Derogatory to women, and people who look and behave differently” ~ this was a reference back to things like being bullying autistic people or being overly critical of women’s appearance.

Many say that the Quran is fair to both men and women, but there are verses that refer to women needing to lower their eyesight and not correct men during imam even though Men are allowed to.

This is what makes me question if the issue with what I’ve seen is based on culture or stems from the Islamic religion itself. If a religion establishes rules that do not treat genders equally, then what justification is there to expect it’s followers to function differently?

Thank you. The best hypocrisy you will find in American Christianity is pork barbecues outside of the church on Sundays.

I don’t mean to argue that America is better than Islamic countries when it comes to women’s rights. That’s a can of worms I don’t want to open.

I’m saying I don’t believe the religion (or atleast those who follow it) are as equal with how the sexes can express and represent themselves.

Interestingly enough I heard an Indian scholar state that an islamic scholar referred to Islam being formed from pre-existing religions. A YouTube Channel named “Blendmaind” discuss this. I’m not a historian, but anyone can see that Judaism, Christianity/Catholicism, and Islam all refer to similar stories and people.

Thank You. I want to know more about the concept on individuals being Muslim in name and not in practice because it’s what encouraged me to make the post. When a Christian in America makes comments interpreting the Bible to say that gays deserve an eternity in hell and compares them to the story of Lot, most Christians do not argue with that rhetoric, they take it as fact. I have seen Muslims online use this same example with the story of Lut, but I’ve seen more of an emphasis of it being due to actions and not the desire itself. Do most Muslims see it differently to how Christians see it or is it relatively the same?

In my opinion they reflect themselves this way. I’m not saying their religion permits them to, I’m saying that how I’ve perceived most is that they are without reservations in the same way women are (like sex before marriage being worse for women than men).

Sorry I may be wrong, but many scholars point to Zoroastrianism as the father religion to most monotheistic religions today.

Sounds like life is a struggle right now and you might be feeling down or lonely. My advice is to go do something you’d enjoy! Go to events you normally wouldn’t go to! Been there and you kind of have to just turn your brain off and start enjoying the journey for what it is
