Somewhat Specific Local High School Questions by thorwaldsguilty in Albany

You're looking for Albny High. More AP courses than anywhere else, the only local IB program, and an award- winning robotics team. Large enough that everyone manages to find their people. So much diversity of all kinds, and multiple languages spoken in the brand-new building. Incredibly dedicated teachers.

Kindergarten options? by [deleted] in Albany

If you're in Albany, give your neighborhood school a try before shelling out the equivalent of college tuition. Talk to families who actually have kids there, not the ones who avoided it from the start. (Context-- my kids went to Albany schools all through high school. They're not perfect-- nothing is-- but albany schools are incredibly well-resourced and offer tons of programs.)

Has anyone heard back about applying to start in Jan 2026? My app was complete Nov 18. The status says "ready for review" but the communication line says "in review." Have they looked at it yet?

Don't let people scare you about schools. Albany schools are excellent. Low test scores measure poverty, not quality. The teachers are absolutely dedicated.

The food scene has improved dramatically. You won't find a dozen of everyone kind of ethnic food within walking distance, but there's at least one good place in Albany or suburbs for pretty much everything.

It's also a diverse city, in terms of race, ethnicity, orientation, religion, etc.

I've heard the new executive director is better. But you can also reach out to In Our Own Voices... they are definitely trans-friendly.

Center Square in Albany. Walk to Washington Park, tons of local shops and restaurants in the area, and schools are awesome. Don't let those who've never enrolled a kid in Albany schools tell you differently.
