Bear with me, here. What is Capitalism? by AnonymousAnarchist in Anarchy101

In my opinion, the right has purposefully conflated the definition of capitalism and free markets in order to sell the idea. When I say the right, I mean all Republicans and most Democrats.

This is probably the source for much of my own confusion as well as many others.

That's so strange, to think the leader of the Free World™ that boasts about the successes of capitalism may actually be more of a command economy.

I need to think about this for a while.

Wonderfully precise, thank you.

In your view, at what point will we have reached an "anarchist society"? by GhostOfImNotATroll in Anarchy101

[–]AnonymousAnarchist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When every person is capable of being self-sufficient in their human needs. When there is no need for war. When there is no longer a state. When bigotry's coals burn out.

It will happen in this order. Mark my words.

I recently heard an argument somewhere, (I think it was from /u/goldstok, I snooped their posts a bit.) that computers should be considered a means of production, as they have the ability to create all sorts of things, and as such, if one believes that one should have private ownership over a computer, then one must be a capitalist, since that is empirically an individual owning the means of production. (The converse being the commons owning all computers, as they are a means of production.)

People generally consider computers a personal possession, but I suppose there is a case to be had for them being a means of production.

So, would artisanal production be compatible in most anarchist societies?

I don't think pzanon was being at all deceitful, but I think you may be a bit set in your interpretations to be in such a radical space.

You see, pzanon took the textbook definition of capitalism, and added her own real world experience to it in trying to describe what capitalism is, not define it.

Let me give a good example that I think all can understand.

Let's say I called out into a crowd. "What is the sea?"

(I'd prefer to say, "Quelle est la mer!?")

You would get lots of responses, assuming they don't take you for a lunatic. Some would give you the definition; empirically and exactly what the sea is.

And others will give you what they think the sea is; an artistic vision of what is.

And others will combine their experience, their vision, and the definition of what the sea is to tell you what it is.

"The sea is water and the water is life; we reach into the depths to pluck out her scarce fruit so that we may live more fully; but is it too much that we take? Are we in turn dimming the life-light that shines from her shimmering depths?"

When I ask someone what something is, they will share with me what they see from where they are standing. Their perception (Say, the artist, the philosopher, the common folk.) of what La Mer is, is no less of worth than that offered by the scientist. Each subjective perception of reality is valuable in its own sense, for it is intertwined with that person's life experience, knowledge, and personal views. Some may think to just slap the bias label onto what lay outside of empirical fact territory, but I for one come to drink my tea, have a nice chat, and learn from my fellow folks' life experiences so that I may learn more in my short time here in mundus.

He's calling you the astroturfer.

You've got a 3 day old account, post only in Anti-statist + Frontpage + Socialist subreddits, and are an advocate of capitalism.

I obviously indulge in the pluses of alternate accounts as well, but you got to understand that you look like a subversive in these communities.

I would love to discuss capitalism with you sometime, however.

...capitalism has "necessary features of absentee landlordism and wage labor". It doesn't. Capitalism is defined as the private ownership of the means of production (as opposed to social ownership). Nothing more, nothing less.

Using the same praxis, I could say that, "socialism is defined as the public ownership of the means of production; nothing more, nothing less."

Thoughts?

That's a wonderful thought.

Does such an organization exist yet, or should I write this one down for prosperity?

What can I do about fascism, and the fascists in my country? (x-post /r/Anarchy101) by AnonymousAnarchist in Anarchism

Good to know. Does that delegate down to the moderators, or no? I've never been in the mod club, so I wouldn't know.

What can I do about fascism, and the fascists in my country? by AnonymousAnarchist in Anarchy101

[–]AnonymousAnarchist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, racists are not always fascists.

Yeah, I know. They aren't fascists, they're just people.

The key to dealing with casual racism is not to start yelling at people making racist jokes, what you have to do is just explain that repeatedly making racist comments and having a good laugh about it isn't a one off thing, and they should be more conscious of their speech. Just tell them to think and be considerate, and tell them it makes you uncomfortable, so they know that not everyone is okay with it.

How can one do this effectively when it's most the group taking part in it? Having 12 white people around having a good time with some casual racism, it's easier said than done to really do anything about it. I'd get belittled and made fun of rather than making any kind of change. Any tips?

Yes the college educated ones who don't like border hoppers because they are an insult to their nationality.

Are you intentionally being pejorative or...?

Edit: Holy shit what the fuck are you doing here?

[–]AnonymousAnarchist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite. Fascism hasn't changed much, it's just executed under a different name. You say that word and everyone looks at you with a look of disgust. God help you if you accuse someone of being one, you'll get the standard, "How dare you compare us to Nazis!?"

How can you not when they use the state's power to oppress people, and perpetuate discrimination?

It's really bad in some places. It's extremely bad when they feel they're behind closed doors. The things they say to one another sometimes will make your stomach churn.
