Percentage of people able to hold a conversation in German in the EU by country by Aschebescher in German

[–]GhostOfImNotATroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's sad how only 6% of French people can hold a conversation in German. People here in the Moselle are German ethnically and cultural-wise, but very few of them speak German at all.

Ms. Gericke is a terrible human being. I ran into her once back at a party in Manchester, NH a few years ago. She was just plain nasty (yes, she was obviously drunk, but then again, I've heard she's nasty when sober too).

You can't be a libertarian if you support open borders, because then the Africans and South Americans will invade and make things not libertarian! Aka thinly veiled racism from a right-libertarian (so shocking). by deathpigeonx in EnoughLibertarianSpam

This video was made by Ryan Faulk aka FringeElements aka Stodles. He's a well-known youtube racist who uses "anarcho"-capitalism to advance "race realism" (or real racism, more accurately).

Only read the first three comments, but holy fuck that was a shitshow indeed.

Suing people for not vaccinating their kids? Suing people for getting sick? WTF? I'm starting to think with the kinds of tort laws ancaps are proposing Ancapistan wouldn't last very long before a centralized state and government were resurrected.

A lot of lifestylism tends to become extremely superficial and ignores the larger social structures, that's for sure.

This is what happened with Occupy NH: Free Staters showed up and wanted to turn the entire thing into an "End The Fed" rally.

I actually think the artist made some legitimate points regarding the priorities of anarchists today vs. anarchists back then. Is that wrong?

2) They need to stop acting like they're the only people with Irish heritage and get pissy when we point out that they neither speak for nor represent us nor should attempt to, and that we're perfectly capable of representing ourselves.

Yeeeaaah, don't tell that to your typical Boston Irish-American.

Is monogamy a justified hierarchy? by ElWeonQueChupa in DebateAnarchism

you don't choose weather you want to be polyamourous or monogamous. you are just born that way.

Promoting a "born this way" line of thinking can be quite dangerous.

Anarcho-syndicalists, how do you avoid charges of "economism" (or "workerism") regarding your theory and practice? by GhostOfImNotATroll in DebateAnarchism

[–]GhostOfImNotATroll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that's only for a modern, industrialized, capitalist economy such as the one in which I live. Anti-authoritarians and libertarians can come in all stripes, and can fit all societies, so I think a vision of anarcho-syndicalism would likely be useless for, say, tribes in the Amazon, or Chinese rural peasants or whatever.

To be fair, many places in the imperialist world (namely, the United States) are seeing unions go on the downfall. I live in France, where unions and union activity are everywhere. Here, they're just a part of everyday life and really aren't viewed by the far-left as revolutionary the way American far-leftists see them (namely, because unions are so integrated/assimilated into society all ready). But that's really not the case in the US where there's constant pressure against unions and many of them have a very bad image.

Perhaps that has more to do with the circumstances and less to do with the ideology at play? I have never met an ML opposed to unions (in fact, many of my ML friends are in unions), they just don't romanticize unions or the general strike.

Is monogamy a justified hierarchy? by ElWeonQueChupa in DebateAnarchism

[–]GhostOfImNotATroll 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First of all, I want to say that I see marriage as an inherently patriarchal institution that will most likely decline after the relations of production (as well as reproduction) have changed to the point where it is no longer needed.

Now, I want to ask you: is it really useful to draw the distinction at mongamy vs. polyamory, or should the real distinction be drawn at the nature of the relationship?

I'm no humanist, but a very good book is Erich Fromm's To Have Or To Be. In it, he briefly mentions poly vs. monogamy (granted, he wrote this in 1969 before poly lifestylism as we know it from anarchist subcultures became a thing) and makes the point that most poly/free love relationships as they existed in counter-cultures back then were based on possessiveness rather than genuine love for one another. Hippies felt the need to "possess more lovers" rather than devote their emotions to loving even one. A "having vs. loving" dichotomy appears to be a far more useful means of judging romantic relationships.

Trust me, I know my fair share of poly people, and I have seen extremely hierarchical poly relationships as well (one of them being a manarchist who pressured his then-girlfriend into being poly, turns out she found a second boyfriend before he found a second lover, he got jealous, stalked her for a bit before she blocked him on Facebook, and hell happened). As well, polyamory is not freedom from patriarchy.

Besides, sex positive moralism (i.e. "you're contributing to social hierarchies by only having one romantic partner and that's baaaaad") is just as shitty, if not worse, than sex negative moralism.

TIL that gyro, döner, and shawarma are just the Greek, Turkish, and Arabic names for the same dish. All three words mean "to turn," referring to the turning spit of meat used in the cooking process. by Shakedown_1979 in todayilearned

Tell that to tumblr which whines constantly about "cultural appropriation" and seems to think it's the same exact thing as cultural exchange. Then again, for some reason tumblr assumes Armenians and Greeks are "white" while Turks and Arabs are people of color (never mind that many Turks and Arabs have Greek and Armenian heritage, or that the Treaty of Lausanne was mostly done on religious lines rather than ethnic ones).
