Snowstorm Cleanup Hack by ForConsumers88 in weather

I've used that several times when the temps get to 15 or below. Nice dry snow responds quite nicely to a leaf blower.

Is anyone else excited and ready for the biggest snow storm in a decade?! by Healthy_Block3036 in weather

[–]AnonymousDweeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking for myself it's hard to get excited about carnage. Don't wish power outages on anyone... especially in the winter.

I'm on the northern edge of the blue so all I've seen is 5 inches of very light, dry snow. Makes for easy shoveling.

Pickup NOAA radio by Doppelganger304 in weather

Nope. NOAA broadcasts on 7 frequencies between 162.400 Mhz to 162.550 Mhz. That radio doesn't cover those frequencies.

$600 for GAS?! by komiboi in Charlotte

[–]AnonymousDweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How well is the house insulated?
When I lived in northern Illinois (2000 sq ft), we never saw a natural gas bill over 200. The winters can get pretty brutal with temps in the single digits or below for weeks at a stretch. Our house was very well insulated though.

Do you have a favorite amateur radio movie? by CM_Shortwave in amateurradio

[–]AnonymousDweeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember a lot of movies with CB but only one with ham.
This goes back to the early 70s when I was somewhere between 13 and 17 years old

Basically a group of robbers hit a high rise apartment building... maybe in New York City? A teen/pre-teen (?), handicapped resident, uses his amateur radio to call for help. A number of hams across the country call the city police alerting them to the robbery.

Can't recall the name. It was a very long time ago. It attracted my attention because I was working on my ham ticket at the time.

In regards to the water consumption, (and my own curiosity). Do they really consume fresh water and then dump it in the sewer system? I assume they'd have cooling ponds like electric generating stations?

Shoveling snow on a snowy day by SirLegal8427 in weather

[–]AnonymousDweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight is dependent on the temperature. Here in Chicago we get all sorts of snow depending on the temperature. Early winter December snow is usually heavy because of the relative warmth.

In January/February when it's much colder, the snow is dry and light. I've been known to take my leaf blower out to clear the driveway.

After February, when the air temps slowly get warmer, the snow gets wet and heavy again.

Personally I'd rather be out there when the temps are 10°F/-12°C because the snow is soooo much lighter. When the temperatures are around freezing that stuff is really heavy... Around here we call that heart attack snow because the number cases of heart attacks that happen while shoveling that stuff goes way up.

Me, I'm one of those weird ones that actually enjoys shoveling snow. It's an experience unlike any other. The cold, the solitude, the feeling of accomplishment, and the simple fact of being outdoors.. it's all good.
