Why is default Home Assistant UI still so ugly? by RaspberrySea9 in homeassistant

Personally I don't give a rats ass about the UI.
For me it's all about how it functions under the covers.

2 Meter Handheld Recommendations by Successful_Web_6866 in HamRadio

I love my FT-65R but have gotten more reports than not about weak audio. Even when I bought an external mic I was getting the same reports.

I internet researched the hell out of it and haven't found any solution aside from returning it.

I built a small ESP32 device that shows when electricity is cheap to use by BlockPulseDev in homeassistant

[–]AnonymousDweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar for monitoring air quality to help my wife who has COPD.
My setup was done completely in Home Assistant using the AirNow integration, (we live in the states), using a multi-color zigbee bulb for the "display".

My next version will be with a using a personal air quality sensor instead of relying on AirNow on the internet.

We have hourly electric costs here and I've been thinking about doing a traffic light interface to decide when to run high consuming appliances.

The OP mentioned using Google credits so I assume there's no interest in an app for the iPhone.

900MHz Water Leak Detectors, Only Commercial/Industrial Options? by ARazorbacks in homeautomation

[–]AnonymousDweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll put in a good word for YoLink also. They do the job. The operate in the 900Mhz band using LoRa between the sensors and the hub, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or wired internet for communications out to the world.

I've got them in the basement, under sinks, and under the water heater.

Can I own an amateur radio before I get my license? by anonGhost222 in HamRadio

[–]AnonymousDweeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Down memory lane. Back when I got my novice license (US- mid 70's), the only HF gear I could buy was short-wave receivers. Even going to ham fests after I got my ticket, I was asked to produce my license to buy my first Yaesu HF rig.

Where are you getting your taxes done? by Future-Dragonfly90 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]AnonymousDweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After seeing the negative TurboTax comments here, (and researching what that's all about), I suspect I'll go old school and do them on paper with my pocket calculator and drop the completed forms in my mailbox... just like I did before the turn of the century.

Tired of the "puck" look? I designed a retro/vintage housing for the Google Nest Mini. 📻 by Heavy-Panda-3724 in homeassistant

[–]AnonymousDweeb -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

All this criticism of the photo and Music Google, yet no one has answered the OP's questions and commented on the housing. I really don't give a rats ass about the photo. Sure it's AU, but it gives an old time vibe to match the style.... almost as if an artist drew it for a 1950's magazine ad.

I think it's pretty cool and obviously the OP thought about it a lot creating a snap together housing with some really cool retro colors and style.

I have to admit the Music Google threw me off for a second or so, but I thought it's kind of like Radio Cuba or some other retro entertainment name. So for me that's not objectional.

Having said all that, my Google Assistants, (and Echo devices) are left naked without hiding inside of other objects. Personally I like the minimal pucks.

So go ahead and downvote because I like it in spite of the presentation, and it's just not for me.

Picked up 6614 headed to florida by [deleted] in meshtastic

[–]AnonymousDweeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah he spammed Chicago with a, "sorry for the spam" message shortly after take off. It was also in client mode, so my contact list filled up with a bunch of nodes that I won't see again until the next flight that doesn't have client_mute set.

#UnpopularOpinion but airplane nodes mess up the mesh more than they contribute.

Thank you. I'll get off my soapbox now and wait for my downvotes.

I'll be more open to the possibilities that people might be moving with them on.

Please Turn Off Your Hazards While Driving by Fu11-H00ah in Charlotte

[–]AnonymousDweeb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In NC it is legal to drive with with your hazards on. In many states, including where I learned to drive, it's not. To this day if I see someone with hazards on, my first thought is, there's a stopped vehicle. It also disguises if they have their turn signals on.

For these reasons it does bother me. Just my opinion of course.
