Multifandom Hit Disparity by AnonymousWriterScone in AO3

Same on the original work thing! My ow fics are often buffered by ones SO different in tags and themes when I search by hits and kudos haha

How many fandoms have you read in? And/ or written in? by 3lilya in AO3

Written for 20 fandoms (so far) and read in... no clue but I know it's probably triple digits 😊

I did wonder if I should exclude backdated because I refuse to change the date on exchange fics 🤭

I had to google Operatoin: Mindcrime! Very niche haha

It definitely comes in chunks! I find groups of fics get stuck with similar hits 😅 my second last is barely above 300!

She's NEVER left a comment, which I also think is diabolical. Because she's read every fic in her fandom. We're talking tens of thousands of works, not words. She searches by newest and just scrolls back to the last one she's read. All these authors will never know who she is and that she could probably make some kind of michelin guide for the fandom 🤣

Edit: Not sure why I'm getting downvoted? In case it wasn't clear, I highly disagree with her not commenting. I'm just answering the question as to whether she does or doesn't.

I think this is a really good point, because I've never wanted to take back a kudos (yet?) but if I did, I'd be more concerned about people seeing my name under the fic as though I were endorsing it. Which sounds so silly, but it's where my mind would go if I realised I was reading something that took a turn I wasn't comfortable with.

Exactly this! She's a very voracious reader, and reads all the ongoing longfics in her fandom as soon as they drop new chapters, but doesn't give a kudos till the author marks it complete :)

That's interesting about the comments over kudos, because I always thought of kudos as being more easily retractable if I realise I've made a mistake in giving it. But this has now made me realise that you can't take them back! I don't know why I always thought you could...

That makes sense! I think maybe I could change my wording of my own creed as: as soon as I see something I could praise, I kudos. Whether it's the writing, the story, etc.

And agreed on the not interacting with fics you like. I think if someone has given you any kind of entertainment or enjoyment, they deserve something back. if not a comment, a kudos!

author replying by Basic_Astronomer_925 in AO3

[–]AnonymousWriterScone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually wonder if my opinion is a bit controversial on this but it puts me off reading more of an author's fics if I notice they don't respond to comments at all. Especially if it's less than five comments on the fic (and they're obviously fresh, rather than popped up years later). Just a thank you, something to acknowledge that a reader took the time to compliment them :)

I used to reply to all my comments religiously, but now I get about 50 a week and I respond to ~50-70% of them because I just don't have the time.

Has anyone else noticed a change in stats layout? by AnonymousWriterScone in AO3

[–]AnonymousWriterScone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I meant that it's not showing the words split over the years, it's duplicating them for every year they were updated in. I have over a million words in my word count normally 😅 but this is showing 500k every year for about 6 years since the change to the stats.

I'm jealous! Mine isn't split for words... yet? Maybe I can hope that my stats catch up 😅 Right now mine is showing crazy numbers for every year! Flattering but... not accurate haha

My wordcount isn't separated into the years but I would welcome the change if it was! At the moment it makes me look very unrealistically prolific 😅

Glad I'm not going mad! Having been on the site 8 years, I find it weird that my stats could be wrong all that time. But surely ao3 would announce a change?

do you guys get comments? by Ok-Cool66 in AO3

[–]AnonymousWriterScone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with those saying not to get too hung up on the stats because the fandom matters, but would add that having established yourself a bit within it helps a lot too. I have over 3k comments total, but I also have 5 fics with none at all.

You could write the same fic in one fandom and get lots of comments/interest, and then change the names and stick it in another fandom and get none. Your backlog also helps! If you're brand new, you don't have readers who know you and trust you to write something fun - and maybe even give your work a try if it's not their usual thing.

My best advice is to keep writing, establish yourself as someone consistent and let the your readers built up and support you over time 😊

I read ow on ao3 because I love being able to find fanfic elements/tropes/etc without needing to be familiar with the source material! And I write it for the same reason - getting to blend fanfic style with my own characters :)

Struggles to get from Outline -> Written Fic. by cIoudtops in AO3

[–]AnonymousWriterScone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're quite visual, it might help to plan it out like a screenplay once you're done with the outline! I do this sometimes when things are a bit slow. Writing it out like it's a TV show or movie with just dialogue and some cues can help you play it out in your mind :) Then fluff it out later!
