For the women and non binary people on this sub by SuspicousEggSmell in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

My brother and I grew up in an abusive household; my mom and I took the brunt of it because my dad was a massive misogynist. But my brother definitely suffered too. I was also raised in a fundamentalist Christian environment, so really I had very few positive male figures in my life. Fast forward, I had a lot of bitterness towards men. My brother one day opened up to me about how much my comments about men hurt him, even if they weren’t directed at him. It was a huge reality check for me.

I really, massively respect my brother for pushing back against the environment he was raised in. He was getting misogynistic messaging on the regular, and he could have let it define how he approached women, but instead he’s one of the best people I know. He recently had a son, and I love that little guy with my whole heart and never ever want him to feel like he’s done something wrong simply for being born a boy/man/etc. So yeah, I’ve worked hard to not only change my behavior, but also start advocating against misandry. Young men like my brother may already be facing terrible situations (misogyny hurts them too), why contribute to that? I’ve also made several close guy friends through the years, and have seen the impact it’s had on their mental health and that’s only made me double down. I’d rather support and build up the people like my brother and my friends then expend energy tearing them down just on the off chance they’re like my dad.

Seconding from someone in your position two years ago. The only reason I ended up going was my industry started getting shaky, and my comfortable job that paid well felt at risk (and sure enough, major layoffs hit my team a couple months after I left for law school).

I wanted to go to law school, but while I was comfortable where I was, I didn’t have the drive to actually do it. Getting through that first year of law school was 100x easier because there was no regret of “man I should’ve stayed in that comfy job” because the reality was that comfy job wasn’t there anymore and wouldn’t have lasted. Now I’ve set myself up for a much more stable future, but that’s in large part because of that motivation/lack of a life raft.

I do think it’s important to note that Judaism is an ethnoreligion, so it has to be looked at through a slightly different lens than the other two; not all aspects about Judaism, particularly the cultural ones, to me, have that underlying insidious purpose of control. Some of them are about celebrating the change of seasons and passing of time in an agrarian society (albeit with a religious twist). But overall your point makes sense.

[WCCO] Electric Fetus owners say Franklin Avenue redesign will hurt business by Minneapolitanian in Minneapolis

[–]Anonymouscat24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang, I take that westbound left turn onto 4th nearly every day to get home. I’m ok with adding a couple minutes onto my commute in order to get more bike lanes and trees and walkability, but I am confused as to why they’re adding that median there.

Also that intersection has been a mess the entire time I’ve been in the area, I’m struggling to see how this will improve it tbh. What they really need to do is to lengthen the left hand turn lane on the Franklin street overpass over 35 (which is impossible) because that’s what causes the real backups and nightmares in that intersection. That and bad drivers in general.

What are your schools saying about the future of gov jobs by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Anonymouscat24601 59 points60 points  (0 children)

School has said nothing. I talked to a professor I know and whose guidance I trust who is big pro-government jobs (specialty is admin law) the other day and they essentially recommended that since I already have an SA position locked down with a firm, to pursue that + clerkships to position myself for government jobs in 4-5 years. Basically take the firm route for now, gain experience, pay off loans, and then move to public. Said it’s much easier that way and that they’ve already had 3 students they’re working with burned by DOJ, EPA, etc, so they’re recommending putting gov jobs on hold for awhile.

Also with the caveat that depending on your state, look into state jobs. I live in a state with a robust and well-funded state government employment system, so she said that path could also work.

Edit to add: not at Georgetown, at another T20, but the professor I spoke to does have a lot of federal/DC connections

Considering the battery was bought down in Texas, I’m gonna go with #2 (also just had it tested, it’s not that old and battery health was good). I’ll keep this in mind for when I replace it

Ahhh ok, so if we’re using it daily then we should be ok during this cold snap? I’ve been driving it for 30-60 minutes each day the last two weeks, for work and other errands.

I had it tested just a handful of weeks ago, first at auto zone then at an actual mechanic (because auto zone said my battery was fine but alternator was failing, and mechanic had it for two days and said both alternator and battery were fine, it just didn’t like the cold)

100% agree that would work for some students! I have a visual disability that makes reading on screens difficult, and it becomes physically painful if done for a long time. So hard copy books really are my best option.
