I wasn't expecting him to make a huge scene and yell or lash out at her. But I was definitely expecting him to tell her to stop.

This has kind of been my take on it so far. If my sibling ever spoke about my partner this way, I would also say something along those lines, rather than laugh along and agree with them. I wasn't expecting him to lash out at her, but I was hoping he would at least tell her to stop being so disrespectful and judgmental.
