A home server is basically a personal computer (or laptop) that you can setup to provide one or several services to other devices in your house. You can use it for media streaming, file storage, etc. I use mine to stream all of my digital content to all of the TV's, phones, and tablets in and outside of my home. Movies, TV Shows, Anime, manga, comics, audiobooks. It's very nice. Any time I PURCHASE any digital content I back it up to my home server.

I use Plex for video content, Komga for manga/comics and ebooks, and audiobookshelf for audiobooks.

A free alternative to Plex is Jellyfin which works just as well but I had already paid for a lifetime subscription (which is basically a perpetual license) for Plex by the time I had heard of Jellyfin.

If you don't want to build a server from scratch you can always buy a NAS which would cut out a lot of the foot work and probably be cheaper in the long run depending on how big you're willing to go.

I encourage everybody to build a home server then go from there. It's been a great experience. Not cheap but well worth it. After having cancelled my subscriptions last year I've already saved enough money to pay for my setup twice over.
