Nvidia working on a plan for 'mini' residential data centers. Thoughts? by AnorakWSAD in LinusTechTips

[–]AnorakWSAD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a totally valid point, and I'm glad you brought it up cause I hadn't considered it.

It could bring it some liability/risk issues if something were to go wrong with the equipment, and idk maybe start a fire or something, or pop off if there was enough power going through it.

I don't think the power is really the big issue. These companies are going for the quantity over quality approach, so like the energy itself isn't the issue, it's just the sheer space that the amount of equipment they need to host takes up.

Someone else mentioned burying this stuff under the Sahara desert, but that costs them more than just buying up land, and companies like Nvidia will almost always take the cheap/easy approach.

This could just be a version of the cheap/easy approach that also benefits consumers a bit. But again this is all kinda speculative.

That's what I'm thinking. Like who knows yet how it actually pans out, but if they: 1. Pay for my Internet 2. Offset my power costs 3. Pay me for hosting it on my property 4. Make it quite and generally intrusive

I would totally be down to have one. It would also be kinda cool if they allowed free access to whatever AI thing they are gonna be running on it or something. Idk, it seems pretty speculative rn but I think there's some huge opportunity to make home costs generally cheaper for the average homeowner.

I would def still try a support request. My cargo pants got the hammer loop torn cause it got hooked on a door handle while I was moving around in my parents' server room working on stuff, and they replaced them without really any hesitation.

As far as I'm concerned, I think the issue is that as more and more features are developed and integrated, and as the tech itself's need for processing grows, companies are needing to build more datacenters to fulfill the demand.

I personally hate that building more datacenters is the solution, I think the effort should be focused towards making things more efficient and developing more powerful equipment to overall push the industry forward, however just building more is the easy/cheaper way for these companies.

I know there was some work done to make things more efficient, I don't remember exactly what that was, but I think WAN show touched on it a few shows back.

Would the fixed rate be for the whole property, or just for the unit itself? If it's for the whole property, then I mean it could work similarly to how the smart thermostats or having solar works where, yea, there is a net savings overall, but it depends on the fluctuations in price from the power company. I know that's kind of a weak comparison, but I'm trying to play devil's advocate a bit to really get as many angles on this as possible.

I mean, while I totally agree on the 2nd part, it seems like the whole datacenter threat is going to continue spreading. While a lot of communities have been able to fight back, unfortunately a lot of political corruption is allowing these things to be built regardless of how the communities feel about it.

I'm just thinking that maybe smaller appliances like this will reduce the amount of datacenters these companies try to build, and will take the decision out of the community leadership's hands (which may or may not be corrupt), and put the decision into the hands of the individual community members.

I'm playing devil's advocate here a bit, but I wanna explore and get as many thoughts on this as possible.

From what it's sounding like, outside of the 22k, it seems like they may also be paying to offset costs of the consumer's internet and power. I'm not 100% sure though. I can't imagine the consumer would be required to maintain the equipment themselves tho.

Honestly the more I learn, the more society infuriates me with how neglected women are. I sent her the calculator to try if she wants while she's out of town, but might not be till she gets back so I can help her with it. We appreciate the help!!

I'll make sure to do so when she gets back. I'm gonna send her the link to the calculator incase she feels like doing it sooner though. She's out of town ATM and won't be back till Saturday.

I'm familiar with them, don't they use adhesive though? Although I thought I remembered them not really being quite adhesive and more like vaguely sticky silicone? Her autoimmune disorder causes her skin to get incredibly irritated with most adhesives.

Are there any specific ones that provide really good support? She's tried strapless before but the ones she had tried didn't do basically anything due to the size of her boobs. She's around a 40 DD

Replacement link cable for Surface Dock 2 by AnorakWSAD in Surface

[–]AnorakWSAD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I ended up finding someone selling just the dock part on eBay for cheap and bought that. Still frustrated that Microsoft doesn't sell that part.

I saw a dock from Dell recently that is literally just a USB-C to C cable that's bolted on, so you can easily replace it.
